If you have any questions or need further assistance, feel free to reach out.
I started off by upgrading my CPU to a i9 9000 (8 core) and was going to upgrade the memory to 32Gb (already have a 1 Tb SSD installed). The upgrade went well but OOOPS I ordered the wrong memory and had to replace the original 8Gb. The iMac worked OK but was clearly throttled by the memory (thermally everything was fine as I replaced all thermal paste on both CPU and GPU and cleaned the heatsink. Also I was waiting for delivery of the adhesive so the screen was held on with masking tape. A WORD OF WARNING - when I first connected the screen nothing showed up - the last connector needs some force to make sure it is connected - if I had installed the adhesive then I would be in the deep brown stuff! Also big thanks to this video because I had a part left over - the stand off from the top of the fan - which this video has shown me where it goes. I now have the memory so this next weeken it's our with the torx scredrivers and spudgers again. THANKS for this great video - I have subscribed!
You are very welcome! Certain Upgrades and/or Repairs can be very tricky and difficult, that is part of the reason why we work to provide the best and most detailed videos we can to help our customer's out with each of their projects. Great to hear that you are subscribed, and stay tuned for more great instructional videos!
If you can't get some screws to turn (I ran into some problems with the logic board), you should get a Torx bit set and a mini ratchet for some extra torque. I got the Torx bit set off Amazon for $7 [HORUSDY 14-Piece Tamper Resistant Star Bits, S2 Alloy Steel, T5 - T40 Security Torx Bit Set (14-Piece)] and the mini ratchet from Home Depot for $16 [Klein Tools 1/4 in. Drive Electrician's Mini Ratchet with Screwdriver Bits and Adapter]. Also, as a piece of advice, If you're going to try to force a problematic screw with the screwdriver, put the microfiber cloth over nearby sensitive parts in case you slip.
I would love suggestions to this question: I have 2 PNY 1600 8GB Ram sticks with C11 Latency. I want to buy 2 additional 8GB Ram sticks. Cost isn’t a factor. Should I buy: 2 Motoeagle 1600 8GB with C7 Latency or 2 PNY identical to the 2 that I am already using
WOW - they had to make it really this complicated just to upgrade the memory. On second thoughts, I think it is brilliant marketing strategy as it would push the more savvy customer to go with the 27" instead.
Indeed, we feel the same! The "Slim unibody" design for 21.5inch 2012-2019 iMac as well as the 27inch 2017 iMac Pro were extra ludicrous for RAM upgrades, weren't they!
Excellent Video! But seeing this, I'm glad to have only a 2013 iMac without metalcage for the RAM. I hope to change RAM without removing the logicboard. Some people on YT suggested you can access RAM by removing the ventilator and loosen the clamps with a toothpick.
We're glad to hear that our memory upgrade video was a great help to you. Our only recommendation for the installation is the way we show in our video, this is the way we have successfully done the upgrade without any damage to the iMac while doing the installation.

I regret buying this model of iMac every day! with the original 8GB it is not good even for internet surfing. I just assumed the RAM upgrade would be like my previous model not this crazy process which I will have to undergo anyways as to use the imac with 8GB is just painful. Thanks for the great video!
That's because RAM upgrades will not make your computer faster if it's running poorly. An SSD Hard Drive upgrade is what's called for! 8GB RAM is plenty, but a painfully slow and underperforming Hard Drive will always be the Achille's heel of any Mac that still has a mechanical HDD installed in it. Upgrade to an SSD and poof, all your troubles begone!
@@macnurse65 8GB is not 'plenty'. Any modern OS will hog up at least 5GB and having 8GB will push you into slow swap memory everytime you open more than 3 tabs in your browser or 2 applications. For casual use 12-16gb is a sweet spot and larger 16+gb memory sizes for creative work.
Hi, I followed each step step by step. When it comes to reassembling the computer everything went well except for the last last cable. It’s holding position but it’s extremely loose. Is that normal? I started up the computer before closing the monitor but it is very dark and I can barely see the display. I tried turning it up the brightness but it’s not doing the trick. Please let me know if anybody knows what’s going on. Thank you
Great vid, but what the hell was Apple thinking hiding the DRAM like that. I ordered some DRAM and just cancelled it. No way I'm taking the iMac completely apart. Apple just keeps getting worse with giving us access to equipment we own.
Sounds like an okay price on the iMac, but if you’re interested in installing the RAM upgrade with our DIY kit, it is more of an advanced install. That being said, its very doable and more than worth it once complete. If you’re still in the market for a new/refurbished iMac, feel free to check out our wide selection of great deals, and you can have the memory pre-installed eshop.macsales.com/configure-my-mac/imac 😃

Y'all remember when upgrading ram on an iMac 2011 and 2012 all you had to do was slip out the ram from the bottom of the computer and slip the new ones in? Ahh, the good ol' days. Thank you, Apple, for making it harder just to trick people into buying newer due to need of ram and storage.
Those were indeed the good ol' days! Upgrading RAM on older iMacs was a breeze. We're always here to help with your upgrade needs, whether it's easy or a bit more complex. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
While you can choose to do this, most Macs and PC's are far better when installing in pairs, as this will give your Mac the best overall performance. So in short...yes you can...but no...it's not always recommended.
Is it possible to upgrade my 21.5 inches iMac 2019 version Ram 8GB to 16GB? If yes, Can I Keep the one 4GB Ram ( the current one ) and just replace the second 4GB to 16GB or 32GB to my iMac?
You can replace the RAM in that machine, the compatible upgrades are here: eshop.macsales.com/upgrades/imac-retina-4k-21-5-inch-2019-3.2-ghz/memory You can go ahead and keep the original Apple RAM in one slot, and put a new/larger module in the other, yes!

I didn't think there was a more user-unfriendly thing Apple could do after removing the headphone jack, but here we are......ridiculous. And big sur seems to have rendered this machine useless with only 8g
What if any warranty implications and extended care implications, are involved with changing ram and ssd hd, on my brand new iMac 19,2 I bought at costco.
Hello again Career Extendrs, Your warranty on your Apple machine will stay the same. Now the part that you purchase from us and install if they unfortunately fail or needs a replacement you would contact us and we would be able to replace under our warranty. Memory typically has a LifeTime Advanced Replacement warranty. Our SSD depending on the exact one purchase will come with a 3 or 5 Year Limited Warranty.
@@poweredbyowc On this iMac19,2 21.5'' I have to take the whole unit apart to add memory, remove almost everything inside as your video shows. Please double check this does not void /effect my warranty and extended warranty with Apple. thanks for clarifying, (as I know some units you just slide the memory in a drawer external). OPENING IT UP DOES NOT EFFECT WARRENTY!!
Sorry to hear about any inconvenience. We do what we can to provide informative videos that help with getting new components installed. This is being actively looked at/into and we appreciate the feedback. Thank You.
I followed every detail and step by step instructions. Nothing was missed. I then turned the computer back on but it did not appear to work. I opened it up and did it over again, lights came on (which I saw before putting the screen back on) and the fan turned on. I attached the screen and its connectors, and nothing came on. What could be wrong?
There could be several potential issues, but without having the machine in front of us, it's difficult to provide an accurate diagnosis. Since you mentioned that the fan and lights come on but the display does not, we recommend double-checking the display cable before repositioning the display.
I almost want to say leave this to the professionals. 16:35 I slid it in and ended up bending one of the metal connectors inside. Now I cannot insert it in because it bent the insides. The slightest mistake can cost you your whole computer 😢. This also voids your warrant. The disconnecting was the easy part. Reconnecting is dangerous and the video leaves you questioning if you reconnected some of the smaller parts correct.
We are sorry to hear that the assembly of your iMac was a little more difficult than the tear down. We would love to provide you a diagnosis to see if we can repair it for you. If you would like to do that reach out to us and we can have you ship it into us and for $80 diagnosis fee. eshop.macsales.com/Service/
Great question! Yes you can upgrade the drive in the 21.5" 2019 iMac. Please see this link ( eshop.macsales.com/shop/ssd/owc/imac-21.5-inch/2013-2019) for upgrade options.
Hey Aredi Zavala, If you do not have a HDD in the main bay you had a special built iMac. You machine only have a NVMe SSD mounted on the logic board. Regrettably when this is the case Apple does not provide the cabling to even install a drive in that location. The only upgrade you would be able to do in storage would be the logic board SSD option.
Did you ever get an answer to this? I have the same iMac without a hard drive and I want to know if this ram installation video is still relevant to me
Hello Indranil, I apologize about the iMac not posting after the RAM upgrade. This happens occasionally and is to be expected, when you press the power button the computer is receiving power but it is taking a moment to process the new RAM. Usually this resolves in a few seconds however, I've seen it take as long as 10 minutes in some cases. I would press the power button, listen close to the computer as you can often here it making noise. I would wait for about 10-30 minutes and see if it comes up like normal, if not please reach out to us at support@owc.com and we'd be happy to assist!
I had this same problem on an older Mac after RAM upgrade. I ended up installing a fan control app to manually controlled the fan. It worked well as a solution. Good luck. 👍
So I am to believe I can add 32gb of ram (two 16gb) to the iMac 19,2 the I just purchased new, with only two 4gb ram from from factory, Is this correct? I had heard it had a max capacity of 16gb. Thanks for your help

I've owned a computer repair business for 13 years and Apple keeps making their machines harder and harder to work on. This is insane to swap RAM. They use to drop out the bottom under a plate. Now they are going to fully integrated boards with hard drive, RAM, Wifi... integrated into the board. C'mon Apple!!
Ok after watching this video, i am gonna tell my friend to just throw away her 2019 21.5.... and buy a new M4. This is stupid complex surgery. Why didn't they make a door to upgrade like 27 inch?
Say bye-bye to your iMac's microphone if you don't cut out around the microphone holes in the adhesive tape. For 2017 and 2019 iMac models it is CRITICAL to not cover these holes with the new adhesive tape. Following these instructions will render your microphone non-working! Yikes! Removing your iMac's screen after new adhesive has been applied is very very difficult and not recommended. Hope this helps someone avoid this mistake!
We had the misfortune to buy two 2019 21" iMacs. They run at a snail's Pace compared to our old mid 2011 iMacs with eight gig Ram. That they were replacing. They were bought on the strength of the performance of the 2011 entry level models but never came near. I had thought of upgrading the Ram on the 2019 iMac but after seeing this video, and seeing such a poor design to upgrade these virtually useless, underperforming. expensive pieces of kit.I have vowed not to buy another piece of Apple Kit again. At least the old iMac were upgradable via cover plates and sockets. The screen was also behind magnetic glass and easy to remove Apple seem to be going backwards in all directions. Which is a shame. PS. the video is good and informative even if only to show the stupidity of the new mindset of Apple design.

Apples designers should be sacked for this over complexity just to upgrade memory. One of the worst designed computers for maintenance I have ever seen. This is absolutely disgraceful.
Each and every Mac is configured differently. As Apple has grown their line of Macs, they have made it increasingly harder to upgrade certain components. Some Mac's have a backdoor to make upgrading a little easier.

However, it's great to hear that you were able to successfully install the new RAM and SSD without causing any damage to the components. Enjoy the improved performance with your upgraded system!

@@poweredbyowc What memory do you need to get as far a memory and SSD? does all 21.5 4k imac have the same ram and drives?
Thank you so much MG for the great advice for others. These are very good suggestions.
I would love suggestions to this question:
I have 2 PNY 1600 8GB Ram sticks with C11 Latency. I want to buy 2 additional 8GB Ram sticks. Cost isn’t a factor.
Should I buy:
2 Motoeagle 1600 8GB with C7 Latency
or
2 PNY identical to the 2 that I am already using
Thank you to anyone who responds
I apologize, we are not able to suggest a third-party RAM for you to use with your Mac.
Please clarify the install of the adhesive strips at the end. I had to watch another video to realize that strips 4R and 4L go on the display itself.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. We appreciate the feedback and will make sure to pass this along!
Thank you for this video! Now how about a further update mentioning trimming 4R for the microphone? :-/
great and detailed instructions!
This is a LOT of work to just upgrade some RAM. Like much more work than it needs to be, I'm looking at you Apple!
Glad I saw this before buying a second hand iMac. Nope! Pass on the deal. The ad is a local Facebook ad for 2019 21.5” with 8gb of ram for 450.-usd.

@@poweredbyowc same as me. I am working for a lady who said that upgrading that isn't possible. What they meant to say its a serious pain in the neck. or "why make me work so hard"
We’ll I just opened up my 21.5 inch 4K retina
I love how easy is to change ram in apple devices ! 10 seconds! ❤
🤣😂 AGREED!
Is it possible to install one piece 16 and keep the piece 4 Then the speed becomes 20
While you can choose to do this, most Macs and PC's are far better when installing in pairs, as this will give your Mac the best overall performance. So in short...yes you can...but no...it's not always recommended.
THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO, BUT I NEED TO KNOW ...IS IT USEFUL FOR THE MRT42E/A OR A2116 MODEL?
Hi john! This video is for iMac19,2. That is the A2116 EMC 3195. I can't find a match for MRT42E/A.
Is it possible to upgrade my 21.5 inches iMac 2019 version Ram 8GB to 16GB? If yes, Can I Keep the one 4GB Ram ( the current one ) and just replace the second 4GB to 16GB or 32GB to my iMac?
You can replace the RAM in that machine, the compatible upgrades are here: eshop.macsales.com/upgrades/imac-retina-4k-21-5-inch-2019-3.2-ghz/memory
You can go ahead and keep the original Apple RAM in one slot, and put a new/larger module in the other, yes!
OWC the link won’t work 😭
İ HAVE A 2021 late imac. i want upgrade ram to 16 gb. which best ram nice one module 16 or 8x2 modules which brand is the best? my old ram: 12800S-11-11-F3
The 24inch iMac M1 2021 won't allow internal ugrades, unfortunately.
So its either take it apart to make it only run faster or buy a whole new computer?
😶 Sadly, yes 😑
So there's only two slots in this version? Also, thanks for the video!
Yes unfortunately, the iMac19,2 is limited to 2 slots for a total 64GB currently.
If I downgrade to Mojave. Will I be able to upgrade the ram and storage?
Yes
If I had known this, I would never have bought one Apple is a terrible company
I didn't think there was a more user-unfriendly thing Apple could do after removing the headphone jack, but here we are......ridiculous. And big sur seems to have rendered this machine useless with only 8g
Hi Chris! Well, at least the memory isn't wired to the logic board like the new M1 Macs . . . 😅
Agreed. Total garbage
I bought it and prefer the challenge unironically. Not necessarily upset or tricked by the form factor.
Very very very ….. Goooooood!!!!!
This is absolutely bonkers
What’s the max amount of RAM this iMac supports?

What if any warranty implications and extended care implications, are involved with changing ram and ssd hd, on my brand new iMac 19,2 I bought at costco.
Hello again Career Extendrs,
Your warranty on your Apple machine will stay the same.
@@poweredbyowc On this iMac19,2 21.5''
I have to take the whole unit apart to add memory, remove almost everything inside as your video shows. Please double check this does not void /effect my warranty and extended warranty with Apple.
thanks for clarifying, (as I know some units you just slide the memory in a drawer external). OPENING IT UP DOES NOT EFFECT WARRENTY!!
Unfortunately you forgot to cut the sticker where the microphone is at the bottom, I had the same problem and now I use a USB mic!
Sorry to hear about any inconvenience. We do what we can to provide informative videos that help with getting new components installed. This is being actively looked at/into and we appreciate the feedback. Thank You.
@@poweredbyowc No problem greetings from Sicily🙂
This is a really good video
I followed every detail and step by step instructions. Nothing was missed.
I then turned the computer back on but it did not appear to work. I opened it up and did it over again, lights came on (which I saw before putting the screen back on) and the fan turned on. I attached the screen and its connectors, and nothing came on. What could be wrong?
There could be several potential issues, but without having the machine in front of us, it's difficult to provide an accurate diagnosis. Since you mentioned that the fan and lights come on but the display does not, we recommend double-checking the display cable before repositioning the display.
Thank you, could be a possibility. I will check that out.
Thanks for your input, but it's still not doing it.
Which one is the display cable?
The display cable is the first cable to be disconnected at the start of the disassembly process.
Brilliant!
is it possible to upgrade the internal storage as well?
Great question! Yes you can upgrade the drive in the 21.5" 2019 iMac. Please see this link ( eshop.macsales.com/shop/ssd/owc/imac-21.5-inch/2013-2019) for upgrade options.
We’ll I just opened up my 21.5 inch 4K retina 2019 and there’s no hard drive like it shows in this video, is that normal??
Hey Aredi Zavala, If you do not have a HDD in the main bay you had a special built iMac. You machine only have a NVMe SSD mounted on the logic board. Regrettably when this is the case Apple does not provide the cabling to even install a drive in that location. The only upgrade you would be able to do in storage would be the logic board SSD option.
Did you ever get an answer to this? I have the same iMac without a hard drive and I want to know if this ram installation video is still relevant to me
My iMac 21.5 4K 2019 is not turning ON after the RAM upgrade. Can somebody please help me?
Hello Indranil, I apologize about the iMac not posting after the RAM upgrade. This happens occasionally and is to be expected, when you press the power button the computer is receiving power but it is taking a moment to process the new RAM. Usually this resolves in a few seconds however, I've seen it take as long as 10 minutes in some cases. I would press the power button, listen close to the computer as you can often here it making noise. I would wait for about 10-30 minutes and see if it comes up like normal, if not please reach out to us at support@owc.com and we'd be happy to assist!
We did this, but now I’m getting full fan speed after installing the ram.

Sick of this corporate greed. Asked a Mac repair shop for the labour to upgrade memory that I bought from OWC. $250 Ridiculous
I remember the daytime s when Apple was simple.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention! I'll certainly pass this along to our team. Thank you for your feedback!

They are evil to design it this way. Completely disassemble to change memory? Oh I see. Buy a new one
