I only wish all this information was there 20+ years ago... Due to injuries, during military service, I will never be able to play the pieces I always wanted to play. I can barely play Malaguena, But seeing such a robust catalog of videos and dialog on playing and territorials. You are doing amazing work. In today's society this kind of dedication gets lost. Asturias was the piece I was working on last and before my life went to the left. I always liked the harmonics. Lord bless and keep you and your family. The world needs you light. keep doin what you do or those songs will be forgotten!
Thank you for the good advices. I learned this piece 50 years ago, probably with the same challenges you mentioned in this video. Playing it slow is probably not so well understood when you are young. So it is very good advice. What is helping me personally most is 1. play without music sheet 2. keep the ego under control. Do not try to be better than you are. Relax. 🤓😋🥰. Do not be too stubborn on fingering and melody. Make it your own piece.
@@GordonLF Dear Hector, I normally do also not learn by ear, although this is sometimes a good exercise. Only when I forgot a piece or part of it, I try to reconstruct it first by ear. Or if a piece does not sound perfect to my ear, often the beginning or end, I change it by ear. But what I mean with play without music sheet is, do not use music sheets WHILE playing. When I had to play the piano as a child I could only play if I had music sheets in front of me. So I could sort of play like a robot and „sleep“ during playing. In this way I could not really play from the heart. When I learned Chinese a few years ago, my brain was sort of reprogrammed. After that I could learn sort of „picture like“ and not using much music theory or intelligent sequencing. Now also my ego has vanished, so I am also not afraid to make failures anymore, I even enjoy it and find it funny sometimes. Hope this long clarification helps. It is sometimes difficult to explain things in one sentence 😋🤓🥰. Have fun.
Her teachings are spot-on correct. I've gone through frustrating moments while practicing because of my impatience, thinking that I already have what it takes to get to the next level. I was spot-on wrong, time and time again.
i played banjo for 60 years. never followed good advice like yours, because there just wasn't so much advice (for banjo, anyway!) because i practiced all my bad habits, they 'sounded' okay until i started to really age. this turned out to be critical for my own musicianship. now, my physical limitations make my bad habits impossible to sustain... i practice employing proper hand position, wrist alignment, fretting everyday. progress is very slow, but it really doesn't matter if i 'run out of time'.
Best advice I've ever heard. I was fortunate to see A.V. perform in an intimate listening space in NYC, several years ago. I was mesmerized by her restraint and ability to never overpower the strings or kill her tone.
I be tried to learned 25 years ago, I am 45 today I spare for a year to buy my Esteve and today I return. I didn’t had time to work on it between lesson, was no internet yet well for everyone. She has a beautiful fingerings
A slow pace with relaxed hands and curved fingers to minimize injury and develop muscle memory and a suggestion to avoid the development of personal nuance or the introduction of the written tonal variation until the piece is entirely under your fingers. A measured and careful meditation upon foundation and intent meant to blossom with time and practice. A scientific approach. So rare and worthy to hear advise from a master to a nascent student of the classical guitar!
I quit playing years ago because I just wasn't happy with my progress. Now Im back at it just for the enjoyment and mental retreat. Now my playing is better than it ever was.
Beautiful? Ha! This is much more than just beautiful. It is a world class tone quality and exceptionally clean. But no matter how much this friendly woman explains - you will never get close to her playing. Never! Ana Vidovic is one of if not THE leading guitar player in the whole world. To be able to play similar to her you must begin at the age of 6 or 7 with a good teacher.
Ana, so beautiful. Me a pensioner still learning to play the classical guitar over the years. Learned the hard way...self taught with all the mistakes built in. Enjoying playing the guitar, but I'll never ever play as well as you.
If I had listened to this with a piano part in the background, most, if not all of your advice would also have been applicable. It is good to have that kind of refresher some times.
Asturias is a piece Im pretty sure I will never be able to play, not even wrong. But good advices are always welcome, specially from the one that play the piece so well. As a funny fact, not sure why when watching and hearing Ana (or any other classical master) talk about how to position your hands and elbows, the first thing that comes to my mind is the video from Tommy Emmanuel playing Classical Gas and doing all the things "wrong". I guess different types of music requires different skills.
That's all true. Don't be afraid to work slowly but correctly. I've been playing electric guitar for 3 years and correcting the variable stroke to the necessary one took months and months for me. As for the metronome, without it you simply will not learn to play adequately, you will not be able to understand the rhythm. Great advice

1. Warm up beforehand, making sure that your wrist is straight, you’re playing with your fingertips, and your right hand is positioned straight 2. Play very slowly at the beginning 3. Practice with a metronome (don’t change the tempo while playing) 4. When practicing, don’t play with “Colors” 5. Practice by sections 6. You don’t have to follow exactly the indications (ex: fingerings) 7. Don’t get discouraged, it takes time but slow practice always pays off
As a Jazz and Blues guitarist, I am subscribing. All you mention here applies to basic mastery of mechanics. Warm-ups are well mentioned. No doubt a metronome time feel is essential. Guitar setup is very important..one string too high in nut or saddle is detrimental at times. Noone has our hands..learn to make adjustments at saddles and nuts! Also frets have to be as near perfectly leveled. Hard to find good repair folks. Takes time for guitars to settle in and most don't take the time needed as repair folks. Light strings are more forgiven but tones can sound the same as well as approaches gleaned from books. Life experiences determine artistry which may not reap financial benefits as much as clones of others often do. I studied Trombone also but mainly self taught on guitar. Had to mention things rarely mentioned by guitarists who don't know anything except to play them.
I love this classical one! It's the first that I learned while learning playing classical guitar together with learning the notes. I'm not far yet, but I'll get there 😁 There is however a little weird movement going on on my right hand. It's going up- and downwards while playing the strings. Not a big issue but it's strange. It's like my hand is dancing at the rhythm 😂 So that's a technique that I need to get rid off. If I fix my hand with my pinky it's ok, but I'm not allowed to do so..... If I can play Asturias within a year I'll post it on my channel 😁.
Im glad that I never worked with my technical ability, Im not a classical guitarist. Still it is fun listenig to Ana, she is a true musician! Never work with cold hands, and so on. Her playing reaches to the absolute top as I see it. And so I continue to listen to her, even with cold hands.
Ana, I have watched you many times in amazement, earlier this evening, I saw you playing a piece from Fernando Sor, saw your expert hands doing things with such ease, that I cannot do, yet... I just think you are one of God's gifts to US, to the world of music, and I know your talent did not develop overnight but through years of hard work and sacrifice.. when I was 16, and my friends were calling me to come outside in the summertime, I had to stay in and practice, but I had such a LOVE for it then I didn't even mind!..
