Just finished this movie for a high school assignment. As much as this helped me understand how awful the genocide really was, this was one of the most traumatizing movies I’ve ever watched and it makes me tear up everytime I think about it. Its truly horrible how this was based on a actual story, my heart goes out to those that didn’t make it during the era.

@@CANNED_POSSUMS I taught this for many years. It had the same effect on my students. It's one of the cleverest movies ever made. I don't know if many film critics even understood half of the symbolism here e.g. The primal shower scene when Paul can't dress himself after what he has seen. The red tie symbolizes the way that the Western World has blood on its hands. Paul has always looked up to first-world countries and he acts as they do with his smart suits, shirts, and ties, etc., but ultimately, he has 'come up short' as a person, and so have they.
So sad that the world ignored this and the same kind of thing is now happening in the Southern Cameroons but the world is waiting for another bloodbath so they give fancy speeches at the UN and make another movie. We've failed woefully.

I’m looking to see this movie. However, knowing the real stuff about Paul Rusesabagina, I’ll watch this movie with an open mind and remember that not all biography movies like this one are 100% true. While the horrific event itself was true (unfortunately), I will never forget the truths about Paul.
This movie is a great awakening of the wrongdoings we are capable of and the humanity that lives within. What a brave man. How terrifying, to witness mass killings abruptly and begin preparing for battle in hopes to protect those still alive and in your hotel. Forever a hero!
I remember seeing the last 5 minutes of this movie days in a row while working in a movie theater as an usher...waiting for movies to finish up so that I can clean up. I don't know why that stopped me from ever wanting to watch it fully but now I want to watch this for sure

Was the scene they watched on the monitor real when they watched it in hotel? No, it was much much worse, you can’t unsee something like that and if you search TH-cam u can still find it but I would not recommend it, a poor man is sitting upright on the ground, a Hutu walks up and chops off his head, it rolls on the ground as the man is still sitting upright while the guy continues to swing at his head on the ground while the body part of the man raises his hands and arms around and gets struck and falls. They continue to hack at this poor man for 50 seconds as his arms move around and his head is at his feet. Most horrific thing I’ve ever seen.
An innocent man guilty only of his ethnicity. He had worked as a humble neighborhood auto mechanic who couldn’t even afford any of the cars he repaired for his customers. The person sitting right next to him on that roadway was his daughter who was still a schoolgirl. On weekends she sang in the local church choir. She liked to tell him that her plan is to go to medical school and earn enough money to buy him the car he couldn’t yet afford. But they ended up there together after they were caught while attempting to run away. Her mother survived and gave those details later in a newspaper interview.

This Genocide against the Tutsi that happened in 1994 was not the first time Tutsis were being killed, it goes way beyond the 1959. To mark this, I am not saying that all Hutus are responsible for the killings, some of them were brave enough to stand against these plans and some of those paid a higher price for that as their own lives.

To mark this, I am not saying that all Hutus are responsible for the killings, some of them were brave enough to stand against these plans and some of those paid a higher price for that as their own lives.
