there is absolutely NO WAY shanks could have known about blackbeard having the dakr dark fruit. His warning wasn't in reagrds to powers and such, it was in regards to how DEVIOUS Blackbeard is. SHanks was worried that Blackbeard was WAY more dangerous than everyone thought because of these factors.
Agree! and he mentioned his scars to make a point. Those scars was shown to us when Luffy was just a kid so many years ago before Blackbeard got his devil fruit power

In a world full of super powered people, Blackbeard turned himself into a man of kryptonite. It's not a perfect counter, as he explained and was shown, but it still makes him a very serious threat.
I have reread the whole thing couple of times and never noticed how early Dadan was mentioned. Considering the certain filler character we just saw it's kinda curious.
Blackbeards dark dark fruit is the most interesting devil fruit power in the entire series for me. They never said it was the most powerful they specified its "the most evil power" of all the devil fruits and the fact that it functions more like an anti devil fruit with the power negation but also the fact that BB can be hit and feels pain much more intensely despite it being a logia. There's also even the fact that he killed a friend to get it, whereas most other devil fruits users are specifically given the fruit by someone else, even the "bad guys" like cp9 All of that easily makes it one of the series biggest mysteries much like BB himself.
Shanks said that when Blackbeard gave him the scar, Shanks was basically said that BB hurt him despite Shanks being focused and ready to fight. BB was hiding his true strength and potential by being and underling on Whitebeard's crew. That's why Shanks believed that a fight between the two would be a bad idea.
shanks has the 3 scars on his eye when he and luffy were in windmill village, so he fought blackbeard at least a decade before he even had the darkness fruit
I fucking love how much Teach gets hit and how kinda patethic he looks at times, it's pretty obvious that he is being build up for something, but in most other series characters like him are showed to be infalible and at the top of the food chain,Teach is strong don't get me wrong but he also is flailing in the floor while crying like a punk. Also there are some really interesting lines in this episode. Now for One Piece at a time: Remember how Usopp was hyping up Luffy's first bounty because he was in it? Well Sogeking first bounty is 30 mil the same as Luffy's first bounty. Also Thatch's name is another version of the real life Blackbeard's name, there are record of it being written as Edward Teach or Edward Thatch.
its always been scary to me how teach acts like that. u dont know if you can take him serious or not. so once you underestimate him, he gets in a critical hit and you're screwed.
I love that you both questioned why Ace didn't run! I think most folks see this as an even match-up. Something easy to forget at this point is that Shanks told Whitebeard that Blackbeard was once able to scar his face without using any cheap tricks. (We still don't have any more info about how that might have happened except for a possible time period when it could have went down.)
@@askalad You accidentally spoiled about additional context that comes later, can you remove that? It seems you misunderstood what my intent. I wasn't saying he _should_ run. The intent of my comment was to draw attention to this aspect of Ace's character.
In insight it wasn’t that cut and dry that blackbeard was going to win to ace’s perspective since we know now what he had in his arsenal oda was just really bad at powerscaling at that moment even tho for me it wasn’t a ace got no chance type of scenario to most people they ace power literally cant work on blackbeard which is false but oda writing could make people think that
@@AcedOnez authors dont powerscale, fans do, it was quite obvious that he wasnt winning this, he had no recon and went in impulsively because of his confidence in his strength, like shanks told whitebeard the strength and fame at that age complicates things, Ace wasnt ready, he even emphasized to whitebeard that he didnt let his guard down when blackbeard scarred him. all the writting pointed to ace having no chance imo. and later when we see the context of ace leaving, even whitebeard had specific thoughts lets just say.
@@98ore yes i agree i knew he wasn’t going to win because narratively everything was pointing to ace losing but im talking in terms of powerscaling its done poorly in terms of showing ace’s abilities with and with what we know he has post time skip he wouldve lost anyways but i feel like if oda would’ve fleshed out the scale better the audience wouldn’t be like “ace is dumb because he can’t use his devil therefore he loses” even though it’s not that simple watching back knowing the powers that these characters had at that moment but hey i understand he wanted to flesh it out post time skip but i feel like that makes fights between devil fruit users ambiguous pre time skip
i was sooo sad when merry died, but going from "going merry" to "thousand sunny" is just so cute. like its soooooo strawhats, so luffy. hes always merry, and he like, brings the sun with him wherever he goes metaphorically, and now literally. im sick rn so thinking about the straw hats for too long is gonna make me cry, but im glad you guys like her
36:39 Ace is worth more but Black Beard's plan didn't involve Ace . He wanted a well known pirate so that the World Government can approve of him as a Warlord and Luffy was just the right person at the time especially as he is gonna take the empty place of Crocodile that Luffy defeated . 41:52 A lot of people underestimate Black Beard because of how he is build and how he gets hit and feels like weak and how badass Ace looks and is compared to him and I feel like that was purposely done by Oda which I really liked . We all know Luffy too gets hit a lot of times in his battles but we never would think Luffy is acting pathetic but people looked at Black Beard as he feels pathetic getting hit by Ace despite tanking Ace's attacks . 42:02 You broke this down really good as you compared Luffy and Black Beard's durability and endurance where people don't see Black Beard's durability and endurance as he looks sweating and is breathing heavy but still is fighting back really good .
it's ironic that ace is the sun, but we know know who actually is. and yes, blackboard cannot disperse like other logia cause his darkness has passive gravity.
There was a joke about Thousand Sunny way back at Arlong Park in Nami's flashback. Bellemere gives nami a "lion" shirt and Nami say "that lion was a sunflower"
Pirate names: Oda used names of actual pirates for his characters. He mixed the names up a bit so they weren't exact, but real pirates were his inspiration. Even Alvida is inspired by a real pirate. Blackbeard - The real backbeard was named either Edward Teach, Edward Thatch or Edward Drummond. Most commonly accepted as Edward Teach. There's some indication that "Thatch" was a nickname that was given to him because of the way he wore his beard. Basically it's not Japanese but European and Caribbean lore that brought us Newgate and Teach and Thatch. It's also worth remembering that for the early characters, their names still follow the Japanese pattern rather than the Western pattern, where the family name is first. So Whitebeard's family name is Edward, his personal name is Newgate, Blackbeard's family name is Marshall, his personal name is Teach, etc. Oda was 17 when he started this thing, there's probably a lot he didn't know yet.
Oh! Now that we've seen the Revolutionaries back at base, I can share one of my headcanons! Remember that weird-ass dog mask Garp was wearing when we first met him, that never gets explained or used again after he takes it off? Notice something weird about Revolutionary HQ? They all have animal hats! Dragon is Garp's son, and the Revolutionary leader... so I think that once upon a time, Dragon gave Garp his dog hood as a gift, and Garp kept it all these years, even after his son left to go against the World Government. This isn't terribly well supported by the series after this point, but I like it. 😁
"The fight between these two pirates will be the trigger for a massive incident that about to happen" When narrator drop a line like this they are no jokes. And now we get these line again in recent arc I'm so hype.
Im literally watching this with you, i watched one piece ling time ago, and i reached the end of this arc and never continued. Im even spoiled about all the good stuff that comes later, but i still wanna watch, but this time along side you..
The devil fruit's catalogue was mencioned first by Sanji in Jaya (if i remember correctly). Same episode when he says he's from North Blue. So yes, there's a book with pictures of every known devil fruit, that's why Blackbeard knew perfectly the dark-dark fruit.
Have you ever wondered if the mugiwaras meet again with people they already know, for example, what would the interaction between Robin and Vivi be like? Remember that Robin was very seinen in that arc XD
I also hope they don't skip at least the beginning of the next filling, as I said there they show functions of the sunny that almost no one sees because others say so
honestly u guys are goated for analyzing the different motivations of ace, blackbeard and luffy. because that is a very important thing and u guys very spot on with a lot of things in how oda is trying to write and portray characters
In a cover story they show Zeff and the cooks modifying the Baratie by putting a huge reproduction of Sanji's wanted poster in front of it😂 it was also so nice to see Kureha immediately soften when she saw Chopper's poster☺
Blackbeard is not a warlord. He's a noname pirate, a MOOK, he has done NOTHING to get the government's attention let alone prove why they should even LET HIM be a warlord. That's why he wanted to attack luffy, by going "I caught this upstart pirate for you that you seem to be havign trouble with, can I be a warlord now?" but since he, you know, didn't GET luffy he didn't get that chance. He merely offered himself as an option back then, but he didn't earn the position at this point.
So, just to let you know,by the end of Enies Lobby, Oda finished another one of his cover story, and possibly my favorite one of his (and is also really important for some context). This one centers around Miss Goldenweek's daring rescue to save her former coworkers from the clutches of the Marines! As you recall, her, Mr 5 and Miss Valentine were left on Little Garden to fend off for themselves (Dory and Broggy are still fighting each other, full on fisticuffs, since their weapons shattered). Ones news reaches them through pellican delivery that all the Baroque Works bighsots at Alabasta were captured, including crocodile, they spring into action for a prison break! They hitch a ride on a pterodactyl with her paint powers, but crash land on a nearby island. Unfortunately for them, Hina, Jango and Fullbody are here, in search of Mr 2, who gave them the slip. The ex-Baroque try to disguise themselves as marines, but Hina immediately recognizes them because she's not stupid like everyone else in this story, and Miss Valentine is captured. At the same time, we see that Mr 3 is also on the run from the Marines and just as he's about to sail away, Mr 2 reveals himself to bring him back because, as he says, "You cannot step off the path of morality!" Mr 2 then saves Valentine by using his devil fruit to pretend to be Mr 3 giving himself up, and fighting Hina just long enough for the other 2 to run away with the hostage. The 3 can now put their plans into action: they sneak into the marine penitentiary in full disguise, beat the guards and save the rest of Baroque Works. Unfortunately, Crocodile refuses to come along, since their proposition of starting the company again just doesn't interest him. Mr 1 stays too, since he's a loyal ass guy to the boss. The remaining members decide to go back to the Spider's Cafe that they used to run as a cover, and after Miss Goldenweek uses her most powerful technique to turn the Baroque members' dreams into real costumes (including Crocodile getting a Pirate King costume),they can start working again as maids, baristas, and delivery boys. So wholesome for trained killers! Most importantly, Mr 2 and 3 are captured again and thrown into the slammer with Croc and Mr 1: this time however, they're sent to the safest prison on the planet, Impel Down! I'm sure this won't be important!
For the blackbeard being a warlord thing. His name was put forth but Sengoku didn't see how a no name pirate would be effective in the position. The BB pirates said they were working on something to address that. They wanted to capture a pirate with at least 100 mill bounty to establish credability. Since Blackbeard is still looking for Luffy it's safe to say he probably not a warlord yet.
I like that you say that Ace has the power of the "SUN"... Maybe influenced by the SUN pirates recent talks and the Thousand SUNNY. But I really like the Ace and Luffy kind of parallels here. Also you guys are killing it with the podcasts. Thank you
Based on the In-World Timeline (Fan-Made) by Library of Ohara: Ace vs Blackbeard happened while Garp was visiting Luffy. Its only been a Month since Luffy started his journey.
I recently heard it said in another One Piece read through series that Franky is like a red rug If you add a red rug to a room you have to change all the furniture cause the red carpet changes the vibe so much that what you had doesnt fit And Franky is that to the Merry, hes just too big to be on that ship, him and everything he brings to the table, they wouldve needed a new ship whether Merry broke or not, just to fit the new vibe
I love that Oda always knows exactly what to show and what not to in order to keep the pacing right. He spends very little time on the world at large between arcs, but it's always enough that you have a pretty good sense of what kinds of things are going on out there while you're reading the main story. Also 12:22 there goes Monkey D. "I don't like aclohol" Luffy freaking chugging liquor lol. It does fit with his character though. Even if he's only having a drink with the crew because it's traditional in a post-battle celebration, he doesn't do anything halfway. I think we need a drunk Luffy chapter. I want to know what that guy's like.
thatch is beleived to be one of the names the real life blackbeard went by, so its just symbolic of how Blackbeard is rising up and earning his name as a pirate by killing a 'pretender' to his future legacy as a great pirate
Quite the eventful ending to this arc, isn't it? Especially after what the narration teased.... Anyway, plot stuff aside, there's something else of interest I'd like to address now: Whitebeard's jolly roger. For those who haven't read the manga, it originally had a very different design from the anime's. Specifically, it was shaped like a swastika (or "manji" as it's called in Japanese), while the anime changed it to look like a generic cross. However, as OP's popularity began to spread outside of its native Japan, some slight controversy had arisen abroad over the manga version of WB's mark.... which eventually forced Oda to switch over to using the anime's design of the mark in the source material ever since. In fact, he began using it right at this point in the story (since we all know Ace has WB's mark tattooed on his back). Of course, it's understandable why the change was made, but it does make me wonder how OP's standing in the world would be today if Oda didn't budge and stuck with the original flag design. Because remember, the swastika wasn't originally a symbol of hate.... quite the opposite, in fact. Could this fantasy pirate story have opened people's minds more on certain cultural perspectives deemed too sensitive for us westerners? It's certainly some food for thought....
It's just my opinion, but I would personally not recommend watching the next filler arc. One Piece has good filler sometimes, but that filler arc isn't one of them.
Checking in with those we left behind is still one of my favorite parts of an arc. Those are in the manga, they're part of the story. Smoker: I think you're right, he was promoted, so he shouldn't be just a captain at this point. I'd have to double check. Dragon has kept his private life separate to protect his son, and so his enemies can't use Luffy as leverage against him. So no, the Revolutionary Army does not know his family name. Blackbeard v Ace… it's about to get interesting. Blackbeard has been dangerous for a long time, long before he ever got that fruit. Those three scratches on Shanks' eye are from Blackbeard. He did not have a devil fruit at that point.
@@royalfun1031 which part? When Shanks met Whitebeard he told him where he got those scars. He had those scars from the beginning. Blackbeard was under Ace when he got his devil fruit, fruit and Ace went out and did his pirate thing only 3 years before Luffy. That's math. It was obvious to me at this point that Dragon was not sharing his information with the revolutionary army because they didn't know anything about Luffy being his son, and it's a pretty common trope. Smoker was told he was promoted at the end of Alabasta
Boy oh boy are you two on a fun track, you managed to reach Drum Island during christmas and now you're here? Not only that by the time live action season 2 comes out you'll probably be caught up with everything the live action is gonna use as easter eggs if season 1 is anything to base it on.

There's also even the fact that he killed a friend to get it, whereas most other devil fruits users are specifically given the fruit by someone else, even the "bad guys" like cp9
All of that easily makes it one of the series biggest mysteries much like BB himself.
It needs cooking
Now for One Piece at a time:
Remember how Usopp was hyping up Luffy's first bounty because he was in it?
Well Sogeking first bounty is 30 mil the same as Luffy's first bounty.
Also Thatch's name is another version of the real life Blackbeard's name, there are record of it being written as Edward Teach or Edward Thatch.
its always been scary to me how teach acts like that. u dont know if you can take him serious or not. so once you underestimate him, he gets in a critical hit and you're screwed.
Sun or Darkness ... There will be only one winner
ONE PIECE, THE GREATEST MANGA/ANIME IN THE HUMAN HISTORY ... THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD 🐐
12:28 Oda foreshadowed thousand chapters of One Piece. 😳
Maybe he meant a thousand chapters left?
If that's the case One Piece ends in chapter 1439.
28:08 well he can't just let BB get away. His next target is Luffy afterall
And that's why you regroup with them

Ace is ununfamiliar with th concept of tactical retreat
When you discover Ace is just a kid being impulsive against a grown up
In insight it wasn’t that cut and dry that blackbeard was going to win to ace’s perspective since we know now what he had in his arsenal oda was just really bad at powerscaling at that moment even tho for me it wasn’t a ace got no chance type of scenario to most people they ace power literally cant work on blackbeard which is false but oda writing could make people think that
@@AcedOnez authors dont powerscale, fans do,
it was quite obvious that he wasnt winning this, he had no recon and went in impulsively because of his confidence in his strength, like shanks told whitebeard the strength and fame at that age complicates things, Ace wasnt ready, he even emphasized to whitebeard that he didnt let his guard down when blackbeard scarred him. all the writting pointed to ace having no chance imo. and later when we see the context of ace leaving, even whitebeard had specific thoughts lets just say.
@@98ore yes i agree i knew he wasn’t going to win because narratively everything was pointing to ace losing but im talking in terms of powerscaling its done poorly in terms of showing ace’s abilities with and with what we know he has post time skip he wouldve lost anyways but i feel like if oda would’ve fleshed out the scale better the audience wouldn’t be like “ace is dumb because he can’t use his devil therefore he loses” even though it’s not that simple watching back knowing the powers that these characters had at that moment but hey i understand he wanted to flesh it out post time skip but i feel like that makes fights between devil fruit users ambiguous pre time skip
i was sooo sad when merry died, but going from "going merry" to "thousand sunny" is just so cute. like its soooooo strawhats, so luffy. hes always merry, and he like, brings the sun with him wherever he goes metaphorically, and now literally. im sick rn so thinking about the straw hats for too long is gonna make me cry, but im glad you guys like her
"You should know the rules, having lived through twice as much as others." That line from Ace to Blackbeard still perplexes me.
I love when we see everyone around the world after an arc
this is actually the only of three times the narrator said something about a future event, this is a massive thing. Enies Lobby is a real banger
Yea
There's foreshadowing like that
There was a joke about Thousand Sunny way back at Arlong Park in Nami's flashback. Bellemere gives nami a "lion" shirt and Nami say "that lion was a sunflower"
Thinking diff
"The Sun vs. the Darkness. Who will win!?!"
Eneru's Lightning Ball Raigou,
Ace's Fire Ball Entei,
Wonder who has a Water Ball named Suicune?
Underated comment 😮
lol i never realized that.
Oda is so good when he creates the events that are happening in the world out of the straw hats. Is like the world is alive without it protagonist.
Just when you two thought no one could stop Ace. lol
When BB hurt Shanks it was without the devil fruit
Also i don't think anyone knew about the fruit
Shanks doesn't need a fruit
Im literally watching this with you, i watched one piece ling time ago, and i reached the end of this arc and never continued. Im even spoiled about all the good stuff that comes later, but i still wanna watch, but this time along side you..
CANT WAIT FOR THE DISCUSSION!!!
The devil fruit's catalogue was mencioned first by Sanji in Jaya (if i remember correctly).
Same episode when he says he's from North Blue.
So yes, there's a book with pictures of every known devil fruit, that's why Blackbeard knew perfectly the dark-dark fruit.
This is a great ending to the arc for me. Looking forward to the podcast discussion 💖💪💞
Great reaction as always! The next arc is one of my favourites
Tf bro next arc is so boring cause absolutely "nothing happened there".😏
@@Doflamingo-h3y aside from that meme , that arc is definitely in my top 3 least favorite arc

My life has changed completely after I watched this episode 8 years ago
This is the battle that changed the state of one piece continuing forward. Arcs, characters, everything shifted completely

darkness or the sun. such a great line
Dadan being a nickname for Dragon, lol first time I ever heard that
The Saga to one of the greatest arcs in manga/anime history has begun 😎
Have you ever wondered if the mugiwaras meet again with people they already know, for example, what would the interaction between Robin and Vivi be like? Remember that Robin was very seinen in that arc XD
I also hope they don't skip at least the beginning of the next filling, as I said there they show functions of the sunny that almost no one sees because others say so
One of the best episodes period.
honestly u guys are goated for analyzing the different motivations of ace, blackbeard and luffy. because that is a very important thing and u guys very spot on with a lot of things in how oda is trying to write and portray characters
Eh
"they promoted him to like, brigadier general" you're thinking of Maes Hughes lmaooo general isn't a rank in the one piece navy
You missed that Blackbeard's name is Marshall D. Teach when you went to remove the cat 20:23
That was revealed before
In a cover story they show Zeff and the cooks modifying the Baratie by putting a huge reproduction of Sanji's wanted poster in front of it😂 it was also so nice to see Kureha immediately soften when she saw Chopper's poster☺
At the same time, we see that Mr 3 is also on the run from the Marines and just as he's about to sail away, Mr 2 reveals himself to bring him back because, as he says, "You cannot step off the path of morality!"
Mr 2 then saves Valentine by using his devil fruit to pretend to be Mr 3 giving himself up, and fighting Hina just long enough for the other 2 to run away with the hostage.
Thank you
Bro was too hyped he HAD to read that title 😂
One Piece episode 325 is like June 28, 1914 in world history. The world would never be the same after that incident
the fact a list of devil fruits exists makes sense. after all, how else would anyone know what the fruits' names even ARE in the first place?
coff coff Vegapunk coff coff XD
Ace is so popular although he didn't appear alot ❤
well thats the final villian for you
41:08 This is a really good call for where they are in the story.
Remember what Buggy said to his crew when Ace was on the ship. Never get a problem with a member of the Whitebeard Pirates!
Based on the In-World Timeline (Fan-Made) by Library of Ohara: Ace vs Blackbeard happened while Garp was visiting Luffy.
Its only been a Month since Luffy started his journey.
In a way, Luffy defeating Crocodile was the inciting incident that creates all that will come after this.
I recently heard it said in another One Piece read through series that Franky is like a red rug
If you add a red rug to a room you have to change all the furniture cause the red carpet changes the vibe so much that what you had doesnt fit
And Franky is that to the Merry, hes just too big to be on that ship, him and everything he brings to the table, they wouldve needed a new ship whether Merry broke or not, just to fit the new vibe
Can't wait for the water 7 saga podcast!!!
34:25 a speedo wagon? I'm pretty sure Franky's accident was in another flashback.
Lmao I love how he spoiled himself by reading the title for the second episode. It's like once you start reading it, there's no stopping
thatch is beleived to be one of the names the real life blackbeard went by, so its just symbolic of how Blackbeard is rising up and earning his name as a pirate by killing a 'pretender' to his future legacy as a great pirate
I remembered these day when oda said "soon" it means "years" 😂
Quite the eventful ending to this arc, isn't it?
No point of telling them that now, they are way ahead on patreon i would assume
@@rakhatthenut3815 Yeah true

Smoker says he's a captain in the subtitles but they call him commodore
My theory is that light is to darkness as water is to sand, so Blackbeard can only be intangible in complete darkness.
Very interesting thought on death of gandalf
They dk that
@@royalfun1031 which part? When Shanks met Whitebeard he told him where he got those scars. He had those scars from the beginning. Blackbeard was under Ace when he got his devil fruit, fruit and Ace went out and did his pirate thing only 3 years before Luffy. That's math.
It was obvious to me at this point that Dragon was not sharing his information with the revolutionary army because they didn't know anything about Luffy being his son, and it's a pretty common trope.
Smoker was told he was promoted at the end of Alabasta
"The sun or the darkness--there'll be only one winner."
**facepalm**
I think there is an official table about marine ranks in one piece. If am not wrong at this point the rank of smoker is commodore
The thousand sunny, a fitting name for the ship that will sail the king of the pirates into the dawn of the new millennia
The biggest question is that big canonball where its comes from cause its bigger than the ship lol 🤣
Man i love teach
Shanks was right don’t underestimate Blackbeard and whitebeard didn’t listen.
It has begun...

Boy oh boy are you two on a fun track, you managed to reach Drum Island during christmas and now you're here? Not only that by the time live action season 2 comes out you'll probably be caught up with everything the live action is gonna use as easter eggs if season 1 is anything to base it on.
Oda-Sensei style, mention Jimbei➡️ introduce later, mention Dadan➡️ introduce later, set a fight of Ace vs Blackbeard➡️ announcement it'll trigger a massive incident in the near future
It's not called ONE PIECE just because it's the name of the treasure, it's also called One Piece because every Saga built up with small pieces of names, dialogue, and fights that will combine into one big plot story 🤣
name dropping characters before introducing them is something many animes do
@@georockmann7113 are that many anime also do it in range about 400 episodes and chapters? I don't think so, right?
For set up purpose One Piece really has an intention to make fans forget the name being mentioned before with many distractions, another character with longest introduction after being mentioned is Madara i think, but the hype really paid off 🔥🔥
Remember that Dragon is looking east right now
