    The nightmare fuel for me was when the Emperor crumbles... and I make vids too so I know how long editing take... and yours is amazing! Thank you for all the hard work you put into this. And btw, you can check out my lore playlist if you want to get more into that background background stuff (I also got a playlist with behind the scenes stuff,... I see you like that based on your Labyrinth docu-watching!). YOU DZENPO!

    Great video, I loved that you got in depth into puppeteering ! I’m a fan of this art form and I’m even learning it, but there are not so much videos talking about this important aspect of the show...
    But I don’t have the same opinion on Rian since he is one of my favourite characters in the show. I’m pretty disappointed that you don’t talk about his character other than his introduction and his puppet’s design...but hey, we can’t go in depth on everyone (But you made so good presentations of each character, and when it went on Rian...I was sad XD). I was myself not thrilled by him at first for the same reasons, but he grew on me as the show went on.
    Personally, I admire his puppeteer’s (Neil Sterenberg) work on him. Brea is really expressive because her chore puppeteer Alice Dinnean controlled herself her character’s facial expressions, giving a more natural feel to it, because Brea is an intellectual character and we have to see what she is thinking. But sometimes, it felt like she was just floating and not actually walking. Neil, on the other hand, decided to do it the old way : having someone else controlling the expressions. Why ? Because he wanted to focus on his body movements, Rian is a more physical and visceral character going into action and strong emotions which can be expressed through his body. As an animation fan, I know that we instinctively go to the face to seek an emotion (mainly because of the Disney/Pixar heritage) but puppetry is another form of expression. I watched some puppet stage plays where they don’t have any facial expression (sometimes they didn’t even have a face !) and are still very expressive and alive thanks to a strong physicality and body language. I think it’s Rian’s case. There is a strong sense of balance, rhythm, weight and breath on his performance and a great palette of movements going naturally from calm and slow to fast and nervous. A lot of emotion were conveyed by his breath and he even have some ticks attributed to his personality like how he shifts his weight from leg to leg when nervous. For me, it was outstanding ! When we think about it, there are people in real life who express themselves more through their bodies than their faces.
    And yeah, I agree with his bangs and smile, but it’s more of a design problem. But there is scenes where his face is actually very expressive ! For exemple, the scene where Deet meets him in the woods, we can see his defiance melting into a surprise with his ears going back and eyes going wide, followed by embarrassment and sadness with him looking down. Actually, in some scenes you showed, he wasn’t smiling, for me. Well...as the person controlling his expressions wasn’t always the same, we can tell that some of them were more talented than the others ^^’
    Another thing I want to add is the speech movements. When we speak, only our lower jaw moves, but some characters in the show have their upper jaw moving too, along with their skull, unfocusing their gaze and giving them an unnatural and muppety look. Not Rian (and Tavra too, because...same puppeteer !) on the scene with him, Maudra Fara and his father, it’s quite flagrant, and we got head movements emphasising strong sentences vs head emphasising each syllables (which feels less natural).
    Here I am, spreading some Rian love, but as his puppeteer said in an interview, puppets are less refined than animation so it’s up to the audience to complete the performance. That’s the beauty of this art. Some can see things differently than another. You said that Rian has bedroom eyes, for me they were melancholic eyes.

    • @CaitlinKoi
      @CaitlinKoi  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I will be going more into Rian in my second video, I do become more fond of him as the show goes on. No promises on when that'll come out though (if you check out the rest of my channel, in terms of views this video did... poorly)
      When Rian is following Deet in the last episode, his bangs are all messed up and stuck to parts of his forehead with sweat, and you can see his eyebrows and the worry on his face. In that moment I was like THERE IT IS! THERE'S THAT EMOTION! That scene ripped my goddamn heart out. I really think if they had just fixed the shape of the mouth and changed his fringe, I wouldn't have a problem with him.

    • @elianetorralba726
      @elianetorralba726 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately that amazing show had it’s fame, but it wasn’t that big... But I look forward for your second video ! I’m curious to hear your opinion about the Skeksis.
      Oh yes ! THAT scene ! T_T And that disturbing one where Rian is hanging upside down (so, no bangs) watching the Chamberlain drink Mira’s essence...that was heart wrenching. But yeah, I’m glad he grew on you too. It was hard at first to dive into a character with that face, but I got used to it and as I said above, there is other ways to read his emotions.
      What is weird is that Deet has that smile problem but they corrected it with CGI. You mentioned the corners of her mouth moving a lot, so that’s it. Since she didn’t have as much animatronics to her face (her eyes were too big to blink) all of the work on her facial expressions was done by computer. If you look at the making of, you can see that her face is static, always smiling and no blinks.
      They did that mouth frowning animation on Rian in some scenes (his father’s death T_T) but I don’t know why they didn’t use it as often as Deet.
      My sources for all of that is mostly the Age of Resistance artbook. I recommend it !

    Here's something you didn't know.
    Odds1Out got a chance to see a early screening of the show. Plus, he still wanting to play Aughra's son.
    I want season 2 to bring the Captain (SkekSa the Female Skeksis) and Swimmer (UrSan the Female Mystic).
    You want shifty? SkekLi the Satirist is the second manipulative talker next to Chamberlain and his counterpart is UrLii the Storyteller who revealed secret for exchanging gifts. UrLii did this ploy towards Ordon just for a giggle in the books.
    Also, SkekLi is mentioned in the series and often refer as a jester by the Emperor and Chamberlain took credit of SkekLi's work on the Arathims in the books.

    I personally didn't have an uncanny valley feeling with any of these puppets. It took me a while to get used to the mouth movement limitations, but after so long, it kind of blurred away as I got invested in the characters and believing the acting/puppeteering. The CGI gelfling on the other hand, the one I saw on a kind of test was VERY uncanny valley, with eyes opened so wide you could see the whole pupil. A black circle folkes. AMATEUR mistake when drawing eyes as a STUDENT, never mind making CGI characters as a professional with multi-millions behind you!!

    I know no one will ever read this but I need to vent about a few seconds in this show. About Aughra specifically. So this is a short scene when after she tries to talk to the skesis they throw her out and have to gelfling guards escort her away from the castle. While they walk the guards talk about how Aughra is this terrifying monster who eats Gelfling. Aughra pauses and there's just this LOOK. This look of failure that she abandoned her children and they've turned on her, and then she has to compose herself and use their fear to get away from them. It's this like 15 second scene but it absolutely broke me for a minute.

    If you all are wondering, the skeksis and some of the other puppets are purposefully made to be scary according to Jim Henson. and to those adults who can't watch the dark crystal/daor, I watched the dark crystal when I was 5 and I didn't get scared at all! even my little sibling can watch it, my 7 year old brother watched it all and he even hums the dark crystal theme song and calls me Brea and my older sis Deet(which is sweet and weird at the same time). l Like your video by the way.:-)
