Races like these make iRacing the BEST - 1987 NASCAR at Talladega

  • Sometimes it's chaos.. but sometimes its not! And when its not I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a better online racing experience than iRacing. What started as a random "let's just in and drive", turned into an extremely enjoyable pickup race. Not bad for a random group of folks on the net!
    So enjoy, 50 laps and one exciting race around Talladega in these 200+ mph beauties!

    The Speed Era of NASCAR was insane. Going at almost the speed of a 1980’s Indycar with over double the weight is just astonishing. It makes you think how fast the cars would’ve gone after 1987 had it not been for Bobby Allison’s crash at Talladega that year.

    • @xxxYYZxxx
      @xxxYYZxxx ปีที่แล้ว +39

      "Rusty Wallace completed a 2004 test for NASCAR at Talladega in which he used an unrestricted motor to complete average lap speeds of 221 mph (356 km/h) and top speeds near 230 mph (370 km/h)." Wallace noted the cars would go faster in a draft, besides tinkering from the crews, perhaps 235mph tops. Today's cars could possibly go even faster, but are said to be harder to drive.

    • @austinreed5805
      @austinreed5805 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      @@xxxYYZxxx Yeah, driving a car faster than 230mph would cause it to be incredibly unstable and tracks like Daytona and Talladega could potentially become death zones like how large ovals were for Indycar.

    • @xxxYYZxxx
      @xxxYYZxxx ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @@austinreed5805 Your point is why I think NASCAR is such an ideal series. Because it's not plausible to race much faster in any series, Cup cars being built like tanks can survive multi car wrecks that would destroy open wheel cars and kill the drivers.

      220mph in a 3500lb brick on bias ply tires. All the firesuits back then had extra room sewed into the front of the pants to accommodate the enormous balls of the drivers.

    Was the 18 car in this race running up front with you until pit stops (forgot to change fuel amount and screwed myself). Even though I dropped back pretty far, this was easily one of the most fun races I've done on iRacing. Glad it's recorded in full on youtube.

      I live 50 minutes south of Watkins Glen International & hearing 43 of those V8’s come flying down the backstretch before the chicane is fuckin awesome. The feeling you get on the first lap by when you get a whiff of high octane racing fuel & the sound gives me goosebumps every time. The cars exhaust pipes are also pointed towards the inside of the track so it’s much louder than on the opposite side of the track. 👍

    Hands down my favorite oval car on the service. This was an amazing race, and great win.
    Last time i raced these we had a caution at about lap 14 or so and went green after that. I would have to go back and watch the replay but everyone ended up spread out real bad. First and second was way ahead and i was in 5th coming up on 3/4. I figured if we could draft i would be able to catch them as i was already gaining on the leaders but 3/4 were bumper to bumper running about 190 lol. I didnt slow down for them but finished the race in 3rd. Would of been sweet we if would have been able to link up and make it a race at the end.

    I am only ever critical of the mocking God stuff 😂🙏🏻✝️ I guess I stuck up for Paul Tracy on Twitter* because I was invited to a last minute dinner with him by a mutual friend, but I was two hours away. He was also born near where I was, and he drove fast for a guy twice the size of some of his contemporaries. So, I liked him in spite of his abrasive personality 😂 Anyways, I was going to delete my comment, but the post was gone. Sorry.

    I love this car itself, and I know you are aware as a fan of classic motorsports how a race with these cars should be run, but most of the users on iRacing act like it can be a 3 wide pack draft. It really bothers me. This race is one of the better example of at least 7 or 8 guys at the front that know it's better to stay more single file and snake people out of the draft to make passes. this was the era of the slingshot draft, not the pack draft... That's the one thing dragging this series down. A lack of knowledge by the users on how to approach superspeedway racing properly in the pre-restirctor plate era.

    If you haven't seen it before you should look into the Mooncar league races with this car. Full field of up to 60 guys going at 120% the whole race, almost always 2 and 3 wide with the occasional 4 and 5 wide when things get wild.

    If nascar drivers spoke like this during the race, and they broadcast it, I'd watch modern NASCAR. But alas, plus stage racing is an affront to God.

    I did a victory burnout in an AI race and I got black flagged for going the wrong way and got DQ'd! What did I do wrong compared to you? I did a full cooldown lap and everything. Is it possible not every car had crossed the finish line when I did it?

    those cars in the 80s would lap todays cars in a short time. today they are lucky to hit 195 in a draft when average speed for the 80s cars was about 212 and top speed was close to 220 at daytona and talladega. but if they would get rid of those stupid restrictor plates and let the teams go back to the most horsepower days todays cars would smoke the older ones. the drivers back then were real drivers those days are long gone i wish for someone like Dale Earnhardt i miss him
