As a Rancid Fan I really appreciate this kind of content, I think it's a way to get just little closer to people you admire and everyone here know how legendary this P bass is. Thanks again for the video Sir.
This bass is punk rock history. I loved this video. I am also a proud owner of the Matt Freeman Squier bass. One of the best basses I own and it cost a fraction of what some of my others did.
Ive been waiting for this video since 1997 when I first heard Rancid. Your 1977 P bass to me, a bass player, is like Hendrix's Strat to most guitar players. Thanks so much, Matt!
Absolutely! More of these videos, please. 3 reasons why I bought my Fender white p bass and slapped a black pickguard on it, Paul Simonon, Dee Dee Ramone, and of course, yourself.
Matt I’m your fan 20yrs long from China. I love those late 70s white P Bass just because of you. I went to Japan to see Rancid live which was one of my happiest moment in life. In 2008, I bought my first Fender 78P which is blonde-white and it brought me so much fun in the past yrs! Earlier this year, I eventually bought a genuine Olympic-white Fender P from late 70s when I traveled in the US , which is exactly the same color as your 77.P. This is my dream, thank you for inspiring me across the ocean.
Would love to see/hear more about your basses. Especially the Jazz from ...And Out Come The Wolves, the internet argues to this day whether you used a Jazz or a Precision on that record.
Love "Crimpshrine" written between the bridge and guard. Would love to see a video on the guitars behind you as well as your stand up bass(es) during the Devils Brigade days
Growing up, I learned bass by playing along with you, to your records, so to see these videos and content is like a full-circle experience for me. Thank you Matt.
I'd love other videos like this -- in addition to play-alongs and other stuff. Pretty much, whatever you want to do or talk about, I'm guessing the majority of us will geek out to it. Thank you for always sharing all you do 😀
This is so exciting. I’m only 20, but I’ve been daydreaming about playing your basslines since I was a 10 year old girl listening to Op Ivy with my dad. I got an electric bass when I was 12 after deciding to pick up the upright, and have been trying to coherently play Op Ivy songs since then. This year, I finally have gotten to that point, and am SO explosively excited about it, and then I stumble upon this channel!!!! What a blessing!!!! You are such an inspiration!
You’re such a legend, dude. I was 15 when “and out come the wolves” was released and I spent hours playing along learning the bass parts. This such a thrill to see. Thanks for sharing
Please do more videos like this! How about a video on your love for jazz and precision basses. I would also love to hear about the squier. I hope fender can reissue them at a good price. I recall it as the best sounding bass I’ve ever tried in a music store.
The bass of legends! Got to see you live in Memphis quite a few years ago and got to talk to you about basses at the time. You played a Geddy Lee jazz that night and just absolutely killed it! I remember talking to you about a signature model. This was before the Squiers.
I do bought your signature back in 2012, i changed the pickup with some Fender 63's and sanded the back of the neck just enough to remove the shine for fadter action. It is my favorite instrument and i will re-install the pickup that came with it soon. Thanks for your videos as I really enjoy to know more about you, your gear and your talent.
Hey Matt! Long time fan! Please do more in depth bass videos like this. So cool to see this up close and learn about it! Maybe a bass collection video one day? Thanks for all the years of awesome bass playing and music!
Matt, thank you so much for making this. In my opinion, this is most notable Fender P Bass in all of punk history. I wanted to get one of your signature Squier P Basses when they were available new, but my finances never lined up quite right. They are even more expensive now on the used market! Maybe Fender needs to do another run? I'd love to see a video about what it was like working with Fender to create your signature P Bass. Also, tell us about the guitars hanging on your wall, ever since you started these back during the pandemic I always wondered what their story was. Thanks!
Great video Matt. Would definitely enjoy seeing more of this type of video. Really cool how you talked about the stickers and other oddities surrounding that beautiful bass. Thank you for this.
As a self taught rythm guitar player always loved your bass playing , I had a big Ibanez iceman bass years ago an old friend sold me and I sold it back years later , loving your channel and content , I think it’s inspiring me to want to buy another bass and amp to add to the collection and get back into the bass playing side of things, keep up the rad content!
Matt you changed my life. I used to try and learn your lines when I was younger for hours and hours. I learned so many techniques that I would use for the rest of my life. Thanks for sharing this content and remaining humble regardless of being a living legend and also many kids’ hero
this bass is a huge part of punk history and i only hope one day when its live its life we are able to see it in the punk museum in Vegas. I'm sure that's a long ways away.
Yes!!! More content on your basses, Matt!! There’s one in particular I’ve always been curious about that has your name inlayed on the fretboard, looks kinda rickenbacker-ish
What an honor to have a reissue made, huh? Dude, that is one incredible bass! Cherish it and make sure that it goes into the right hands when you're gone... I'd love to see more videos and hear more stories about your guitars. Yes. Cheers!!
Hey Matt, I used to play bass in Breakaway. I've always admired your playing style and especially this bass. I remember it well from back in the day. Glad to see you still have it. Love this content.
As a fan and guitarist - I LOVE this so much! Nothing cooler than seeing and hearing about the history of the instruments you all have used to make the actual soundtrack to our lives! Thank you, Matt!!
First time I I saw you guys was at the Berkeley Square with Tilt and Green Day, only $6.00! It was record release party for the first album, you were playing a black Epiphone P-bass, I had the same bass at the time, but the white one because I wanted to be Dee Dee. Thanks for decades of great music and outstanding bass playing!
I’ve been obsessed with the bass tone on AOCTW since that record came out. Matt, can you talk about the jazz bass you used there and other AOCTW recording lore?
Not familiar with Steve Harris, but I'm gonna look him up & hell, maybe I do know his work. You're spot on with Matt & Alex. They're both incredible players! With influences like them, you gotta be a damn good player, too.
yeah, as a base player who has been chasing your sound forever it was really awesome for you to give an overview of this bass.... the brightness it has is very unique
I absolutely love my Matt Freeman Squier. I own probably 15 basses, it’s my cheapest bass and also my best playing. I have it all stickered up like yours.
This is awesome. I've been a Rancid fan since I was in middle school (25 years ago) and I've always wondered about your main bass. I have a 1977 Fender P as well. Natural body and rosewood board. Sounds and plays incredible.
Awesome 🤘 as a bassist largely inspired to play by your good self and Dee-Dee this is amazing to see. I hope that one day I'll have given as much of myself to my P bass as you have to this one ❤
Thank you Matt... definitely want to see more about your equipment You know the reason that bass sounds so damn good is because of that dude who's playing it
Absolutely would love to see more about not just the basses you have and play, especially that Squier, but also your amps used and effects (if any). Loving the vids too man. Hope to see Dope Sick Girl soon!
Awesome content. I love the history. I could picture all the shows as you were describing them. Yeah, more videos like this would be great. Thanks for sharing.
This is badass. I could totally go for a video about your Squire run and any little things about it you guys worked on specifically. The Matt Freeman Squire was pretty ubiquitous in music stores when I was growing up, and that Operation Ivy bass sound (along with Joe Lally's Music Man tone in Fugazi) is one of my favourite punk bass sounds
I love how much character this bass has. It's so impressive to see an artist use the same instrument for most of their career. See also the Bouncing Souls guitars. Would love to see a side by side sound comparison of the Fender and Squire.
So so stoked to see this, absolutely love this bass, really helped inspire the way my bass looks now, much more importantly it’s inspired the way I play. You’re a beast Matt!
Thanks for making this Matt. Really fun and intriguing change of pace to break up the more "shortform" play-along style material, although to be clear I love both. Hope you continue to supplement the channel with more stuff in this vein!
Definitely, more videos about gear/sound. I'm curious as to your bass sound from the early days compared to the sound on albums like Rancid 2000. Cheers!
Hello Matt ! First thank you for doing these videos! Great to hear the stories and history! My friend introduced me to Rancid / Op Ivy in 1994. I was 15. Been a fan ever since! Would like to see a run down of your stand-up bass and maybe some history on that if there is some. Thanks.
Awesome video, loved hearing about all the quirks and replaced parts of this legendary bass. Would really like to hear the history of your other basses too, used for recordings and long-term touring...not to mention the Devil's Brigade standup bass!
Thank you Matt! This was the most epic, enjoyable video. I get emotional thinking back to the operation ivy days. I love hearing about you buying the bass at guitar center. The stickers and story about the James Bond sticker is just legendary. Thank you!
As a Rancid Fan I really appreciate this kind of content, I think it's a way to get just little closer to people you admire and everyone here know how legendary this P bass is. Thanks again for the video Sir.
More! More! More! All the basses, all the guitars, all the everything. This is food for the eyes.
Agreed 🤘🤘🤘
I bought mine MattFreeman signature Squier in Milan for 450€.
Very hard to find in Europe.
I play it all the time.
❤
Yes, more bass videos! The jazz bass on AOCTW would be interesting. And the signature bass too. All of it haha
This bass is punk rock history. I loved this video. I am also a proud owner of the Matt Freeman Squier bass. One of the best basses I own and it cost a fraction of what some of my others did.
More basses you have? YES PLEASE!
Ive been waiting for this video since 1997 when I first heard Rancid. Your 1977 P bass to me, a bass player, is like Hendrix's Strat to most guitar players. Thanks so much, Matt!
You answered so many questions I've had for so many years! Thanks for this.
Absolutely! More of these videos, please. 3 reasons why I bought my Fender white p bass and slapped a black pickguard on it, Paul Simonon, Dee Dee Ramone, and of course, yourself.
Would love to see more of everything, basses, amps, how you get your tone, practice routines, etc etc, thanks for the videos Matt!
I'd love to see you cover your Matt Freeman Squier bass.
The sound of that bass is driven into my heart. I'm happy it's so well loved🎉

I bought a bass a few years ago, i'm still killing my fingers on maxwell murder, this video is so freaking awesome
Growing up, I learned bass by playing along with you, to your records, so to see these videos and content is like a full-circle experience for me. Thank you Matt.
I love the detail you go into. People always call their instruments "just tools" without showing appreciation for the tools they make their work with.
I'd love other videos like this -- in addition to play-alongs and other stuff. Pretty much, whatever you want to do or talk about, I'm guessing the majority of us will geek out to it. Thank you for always sharing all you do 😀
Hola Matt soy Traver de la legendaria banda punk argentina 13 Puñaladas, saludos desde Argentina, aguante el punk rock y el Bajito!!! Abrazo idolo!

Maybe a bass collection video one day? Thanks for all the years of awesome bass playing and music!
there is some kind of magic on those 70s precision basses!

Thanks!
So cool! Would love to see the jazz and maybe you could talk about the differences and your preferences.
Really appreciated the look at your bass! Us fans/bass players are always down to find out about your gear.
I loved this rundown! I got the original Op Ivy record when I was 10 in 1990 from my older sister and it changed everything for me.
I love this, please do more! The history of that bass is mind blowing to the rest of us. ;)
Hell yeah, show us some more basses you’ve played! So cool to hear all the history of that bass.
We're one step closer to the Matt Freeman rig rundown we've always wanted haha
Please, more videos like this one! Thanks, Matt, you're awesome!
Love seeing musician’s old, well played basses in the kind of detail.
I just like re-living my teens here, so I'm stoked for whatever!
I bought an olympic white p Bass because of you and dee dee too! Love these bass , so good to play ! Thanks for the video !
Such an iconic bass! I actually built my own 70’s Precision modeled after these white ones. Definitely do more bass/gear rundown videos!!
I bought a 2000's Fender P Bass 24 years ago just influenced by you and I still play on it!!!
That is THE bass! Would love to see the Jazz as well.
YES I WOULD LIKE MORE BASS AND GEAR VIDEOS 😁
Great video Matt. Would definitely enjoy seeing more of this type of video. Really cool how you talked about the stickers and other oddities surrounding that beautiful bass. Thank you for this.

I’ve been obsessed with the bass tone on AOCTW since that record came out. Matt, can you talk about the jazz bass you used there and other AOCTW recording lore?
So cool to see a legend like Matt just playing with everything stock and not messing with it. Looks well loved!
The 3 pioneers that made me get into playing bass is matt freeman steve harris and alex webster ...legends
Not familiar with Steve Harris, but I'm gonna look him up & hell, maybe I do know his work. You're spot on with Matt & Alex. They're both incredible players! With influences like them, you gotta be a damn good player, too.
Yes please - more videos about your gear would be appreciated.
Cool bass, I love instruments with mileage and history.

Matt, you’re one of the coolest dudes out there. Love you and love this Chanel.
This is video is dooooooope! It’s cool to learn about the history of instruments.

Its wonderful to know more about your #1. What a beauty! Would definitely love to see a video about the Squier and the AOCTW Jazz. Thanks matt 🤘🏻
more videos about basses you have, YES
Rad video, Matt. I love the punk rock repair strategies. That thing is a piece of history.
Have you ever thought about doing an Operation Ivy bass tab book? The Rancid one is super awesome!
So so stoked to see this, absolutely love this bass, really helped inspire the way my bass looks now, much more importantly it’s inspired the way I play. You’re a beast Matt!
Need more.. would love to see everything
