Yeah, this had better become his 2nd signature bass in a year's time, huh? If Fender makes a hollowbody P and Matt freeman endorses it, thousands of us are going to want one!
Absolutely loving the behind the scenes. New strings and a clean guitar every set! Just what the premier professional athlete of the bass world deserves!
As much as I love watching you play, it's great to see the behind the scenes guys too. Warren - great job explaining the hows and whys of the string change process. Thanks!
Best thing I can tell you for back pain is to practice stretching your back with something like Yoga and that will definitely help you out in the long run. Just playing and not doing anything will eventually cause problems.😉👍✨
Amen to that !!! My back has its own problems but lately it’s my shoulder causing problems . I have to break up rehearsals like every hour because of the pain ! ( I call it strap pain ).
Thank you for the valuable footage ! Learn about professional care✨ When strings are first replaced, they tend to go out of tune, so I also pull them to get them in tune, but I see, watching that scene was very instructive🎸 Bass strings are expensive, so I only change them once a month or once every two months…😅
I've changed my own strings for decades but I still click on vids like this just to see how the pros do it. Now I gotta know more about that hollow body P.
Very cool. I still haven't changed my Bass strings since the day I got it. I think I'm scared of breaking the strings like I often do when restringing my guitars.
You'd really have to TRY to break a bass string while changing them. There really isn't that much to it, they'll tolerate a lot of yanking around. The one nugget in this video that's most helpful is probably where to cut off the excess.
Maybe some behind the scenes recording would be awesome... and talking about the recording procces and guests from former records! ... Thank you for this btw!
Anyone know why they would put oil on a Maple board? I imagine it has a polyester/nitro coating. I thought the lemon oil was for Rosewood/Ebony boards w/ open pores.
Would love to see a video of you writing some new walking riffs! I.e. if Tim came to you and said, new song, (slow tempo) verse chords are D Bm G A… what would you play???
Curious as to why you measure the string height when you're using the same setup and string gauge as before. Is there a possibility of the height being off? If so, what's your next move?
That's the current standard fender bridge, I believe. They're chunkier now, cribbed off the badass bridges that people used to swap the standard bridges for, I guess. Or just other more modern bass brands
Please tell me that if he removes all the strings at once that he checks the neck relief once all the strings are on to see if the neck moved at all and then does intonation? I wish I was your bass tech.
@@AtomizedSound You’re probably right. I just feel like it’s Matt’s bass which he plays in front of a bunch of people is sort of important. But whatever, Matt’s fine with it and apparently has no issues.
Huh. I've heard some bass players say they never change strings. As a guitar player, it usually takes me 45 minutes to an hour to remove/replace all 6 strings. Interesting the tech doesn't use a string winder, on a 6-string, a lot of times the strings can slip and you have to re-wind if you don't tune up fast enough.
Yeah some do as preference cause they like muted dead sounding strings like flats. Not really the style for Matt and punk in general. Fresh strings equals a bright tone. I don’t use a string winder either for changing bass strings. Doesn’t slip if you are careful and constant in tuning it up
He just... changed the strings without “pro tips”. Heh, useful. But in any case, it's interesting to look at the behind-the-scenes of your favorite band.
Straightaway I hope this dispels the myth that you need to cut one string at a time because if you cut all of them at once you risk harm to your truss rod or you at least throw it out of whack. Plenty of excellent techs/luthiers will tell you that this does not matter- cut them all at once. Easier to inspect and clean as well.
I mean I can kinda agree but one is then have the funds to do it and two is that fresh roundwounds so sound better and brighter and snappier which is Matt’s tone with his mids up
I thought Matt used GHS Boomers ??? I do not like Fender bass strings . Especially stock strings . That’s always the first rule when purchasing a new Fender bass . Get those strings off !! I’ve been using DR Black Beauties . They do look and sound awesome!! But unfortunately they only last like 3 rehearsals and one show . So I just switched to DR High Beams on one bass , and the RR66 on another . Let’s see how long they last …
Fender makes decent strings so yeah and most punk artists use them. I agree stock strings usually suck on any bass. I’ve used the ones you speak of and they are ok too.
@@AtomizedSound I’m always trying new bass strings by different brands . Back in the 80’s and 90’s , if the strings needed changing , I bought the cheapest set . I don’t know if they were flats or rounds . No idea . And back then I only changed my strings if 1 broke . Who knows how long I kept playing with same set of strings …. Haha Nowadays I’m a lot different. I’m more serious about them . Such a variety out there ! So many to choose from . It’s hard to read reviews . It all depends on what YOU like . And it’s definitely a rabbit hole too . Now I am in the process of modifying a Clash Paul Simonon bass . I want it as close to his as possible. I read that he uses Flat wounds . I honestly don’t think I ever used them . If I did , I bought by accident. Curious and can’t wait to try them . Never really knew the difference either . Last decade or so I just stuck with the rounds … Wish me luck on this project 🤠
Changing strings every day after only a half hour set makes no sense to me. I hate new strings. Whenever I change mine I’m miserable for a while. I’m not sure how many hours I have to play before I like my strings again but I know it’s way longer than thirty minutes.
I don’t believe that really matters if the strings are only going to be off for less than 10 minutes. But then again he is changing them several times a week so I could be wrong.
I need a Warren Lee in my life.
Warren- the hero behind the scenes!!!
Casually drops that Matt is playing a HOLLOW BODY P BASS and doesn’t think we’re gonna have questions!? That deserves its own video!!
Yeah, this had better become his 2nd signature bass in a year's time, huh? If Fender makes a hollowbody P and Matt freeman endorses it, thousands of us are going to want one!
He mentioned in some other video that it's just a chambered body to reduce the weight.
@@daleonovyes because he’s old and had back issues at some point, I’d be interested in one!
Nice. Is it a Fender Custom Shop bass?

I'm absolutely loving the behind the scenes content!
Awesome you're including Warren with some bts stuff!

Man... Fender should produce hollow body p-basses, it would be a big seller for us back painers
Nekdive is a more serious problem than the weight of a guitar. And Fender basses can dive even with a solid deck.
@@Lolo4yk The upper horn is parallel to the 12th fret. It should take a serious imbalance to create neck dive on a P Bass.

It would cool to know your specs as far as string height and pickup height.
Crazy to me that Rancid only gets a 30 minute set

Your bass tech is bad ass very cool and also dig the rancid toy figure
I’d love to see your man talk us through a full bass setup, and what players generally prefer based on their playing style.
Awesome! Thanks for sharing! Fender Rules!
How long has Warren been your bass tech? (sorry if you covered this in another video)
Awesome stuff! We Are The Road Crew!!
This is super useful stuff. Also I totally noticed those Star Wars Bandai kits in the tool kit, those are so fun to throw together.
I am appreciating these videos sir. Thank you and God Bless

Hey Matt! My dad Kevin says Hi, he played in a few bands with you back in the day! Im seeing you guys in SF in September, couldn't be more stoked!! 🤘🤘
thank you, that was helpful
Ok…freeman, Lee and Kc for president 2024 🙌🏼
Right hahaha I wana hear more about the hollow body p bass ! Would
Also love to have a small history behind each bass you own and play .
Two posts is how I learned it Warren! No idea if there’s a better way either. 😂
Ive been wanting to see a video on what strings you use and its great to see this video and content. Thank you for that!
I wana get the measurement tools to start doing intonation and stuff
Rancid should be headliners of this tour
Warren is awesome! Nice bass too Matt, definitely has that JJ Burnel Stranglers vibe!😎👍✨
Hi Matt, any chance you could shoot a video of line check and what it looks like going through the set change on this tour?
Does Mr. Lee also have to prepare a back up bass?
Cool video, love the tech talks with Warren.

Very cool. I still haven't changed my Bass strings since the day I got it. I think I'm scared of breaking the strings like I often do when restringing my guitars.
You won’t break them and depending upon what you play or type of string, changing them isn’t bad

I'd pay for a day old set of strings used by Matt on a live gig!
Yes, good idea..are these old strings for sale? I'll give you $50 for a set of used.
I was thinking the same! I’ve never cut bass strings always save them as back ups, makes swapping rounds for flats a breeze.
They could actually fund some serious charity auctioning those off after every show….
Did you buy that road case from Tom Araya?
Curious what height he keeps the strings

Yeah, this is cool content. Thanks!

Man, I brought my bass into the shop for a setup and I had them throw a fresh set of strings on. They only did like two wraps around the post!
Everyone is different , not a set rule
What kind of action and string gauge you got on that?
More info on the hollow body bass
Isn't Warren also Gary Holt's (Exodus/Slayer) guitar tech? Excellent job and awesome video!
Curious as to why you measure the string height when you're using the same setup and string gauge as before. Is there a possibility of the height being off? If so, what's your next move?
I wondered that too. Maybe just double checking Incase the saddles moved or changed somehow? Doesn’t hurt
Can anyone tell what fret he’s measuring the action? I’m curious how his bass is setup.
Usually it’s fret 12 that the string height is measured at
This is so kool!
Always under the impression that you change your strings one at a time as not to disturb the neck relief too much... tho what do I know!! 🤔😂😂
Yeah that is a common worry but maybe since he does it quickly it’s not that bad? Idk
I always wondered how people deal with keeping fresh strings in tune on tour, didn't know you could stretch them like that.
What bridge is on that?
That's the current standard fender bridge, I believe. They're chunkier now, cribbed off the badass bridges that people used to swap the standard bridges for, I guess. Or just other more modern bass brands
You're not using ghs bass boomers anymore?
This is like an ASMR video.
Why would you wanna use lemon oil on a finished fret board?
Smells good, feels good. I really don't listen to the bottle either
Maybe it’s not pure lemon oil? Idk
Lem oil on finished maple?!
