    Intel fanboy fanatics are bad.AMD fanboy fanatics are bad.Nvidia fanboy fanatics are bad.Radeon fanboy fanatics are bad.Competition is GOOD !! Intel fans should be GLAD that AMD is doing well and vise versa.. It makes for competition in the Companies which gets us better products for a lower Price. Be glad Guys, either way..

      +Christian Petersen I agree 100%. I've currently got a 7700K and I don't feel the need to even bother with an upgrade (especially after my wallet got a lot lighter when I bought a 1080 Ti), but it does feel great to finally have competition in the CPU space. How I wish that Ryzen 7 could have been clocked as high as the 7700K though...

      if r7 came around same time as 7700k or before, you might have gotten that super chip at a nice bargain. x5690 owners are quite happy with their chips but wished the same.

    The most important thing is that AMD gave Intel a good kick in its complacent, price gouging ass.

    • @mikew8214
      @mikew8214 7 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      The market doesn't set the price in a monopoly. I sure as hell can and will praise AMD for releasing a new architecture that doesn't suck and pricing it reasonably.

    • @Chris-xl6pd
      @Chris-xl6pd 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      What is a "reasonable" price? You just showed how the market sets the price.
      AMD didn't set a reasonable price they just undercut intels price, which you perceive as reasonable.
      I can only guess here but i feel If all intel chips would be $100 higher priced then all AMD chips would be $100 higher also.
      Bottom line is they aren't interested in saving you money because of some customer loyalty or being some benevolent force in the market they are doing it strictly to make money by competing with intel.
      Had AMD dominated like intel youd see the exact same practices of price gouging because they are a company designed to make money.

    • @mikew8214
      @mikew8214 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Maybe I should have said "more reasonable". Just be happy there is competition now and that we, the consumers, will get better processors for less money in the end.

    • @imo098765
      @imo098765 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Christopher nobody is saying AMD is a benevolent lord and saviour, that only belongs to Gaben, they just said reasonable is something that is fair and sensible (from google). Does AMD pricing beat intels yes it does so. It is a reasonable price, not the lowest they can go but reasonable when compared to the market that it is launched in.

    • @jblevins1991
      @jblevins1991 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The way I look at it is AMD finally stepped their game up and now Intel has to be more competitive in their pricing. I think AMD's pricing is fair and reasonable. At 350 bucks I can get a CPU that will carry some heavy workstation loads for 700 less than intel wants me to pay. And that 700 dollars only gets me a 20% boost in performance at maxed out workloads. For a prosumer (not a company that makes the bread to throw at the intel chips) this is amazing. It gives me more money to throw at a graphics card . upgrade further down the line for a serious machine. AMD's pricing is worth and they deserve the profit margins for their accomplishments. That is like you finally climbing to the second best in . your company, but having people come up to you and say "this salary is not reasonable" and then give you less than a second place salary.

    Strongpoints of ryzen:
    - cheaper
    - more cores
    - unlocked
    - lower TDP
    - great video editing
    Strongpoints of Intel:
    - better gaming
    I think ryzen is currently the better CPU personally, untill intel fires back with better options.

      Actually you're right. It seems that the 8 cores do a little worse at gaming but ryzen 5s do a little better. To be honest Ryzen is probably the best thing to happen to the computer industry in a long time. Cant wait for Intel to fire back to get some competition.

      Intel's fireback is going to blow AMD out of the water again.
      In fact,Intel new 7640k looks like a golden ticket,it adds HT.

    As an i5 user id say that atleast for me i5 is dead. The 4c/4t is just too much and there is no room for any multitasking. I have i5 6600k @ 4.5ghz and if I have anything open when im gaming it will hinder the performance alot and introduces stuttering. CPU usage hovers around 70-100 percent in every game I play. Even if I get few frames more with i5 it doesnt matter because for my use multitasking is more important than few frames. ps. can you do some benchmarks with youtube videos playing in the background or something like that?

      Matt McGregor Agreed. This whole AMD vs. Intel/Nvidia is BS. I have an Intel/Nvidia build and my brother has a full AMD build, but we really couldn't give a rats anus what's inside our PCs. Both of our PCs runs all the games we play flawlessly, so at the end of the day, what ever is in our computers is irrelevant.

    I love your videos greg but I have to disagree with you about the "gaming king"
    Imo the R5 is a better chipset for gaming, sure it has 5% less fps than the 7600k but as a gamer what I mostly care about is frametimes, and as I've watched many benchmarking videos, the ryzen chip seems to have overly smoother gameplay capabilities.
    Having 5-10 less fps out of 120 in games is nothing compared to frametimes changes.

      Fiend Busa you do know something called proportionality ? A ratio of 5-10% out of 100 fps will be 5-10 fps.
      The same ratio of 5-10% for 50 fps like you said is going to be 2.5-5 fps
      And so goes on.

      exactly. That's the main improvement i noticed when moving to ryzen. The smoother FPS curve. My max counter slightly dropped on some titles but the games feel better to play at.

  • @TheJayBee1990
    @TheJayBee1990 7 ปีที่แล้ว +77

    well your points are getting more realistic now.... in this video, compared to the last one about ryzen. Still 2 things that annoy me a bit:
    1. intel lacks innovation in their last 2/3 generations. with the 7xxx Line Up they basically just crancked up the clockspeeds. looking at the fps numbers I have to say: what if the ryzen CPUs what run at the same clock as the i5s? my guess is they will outperform them. There are also frametimes and the fact that devs are still shitty programming their titles with 4 thread utilizing etc, but thats a different story.
    2. you and all other techtubers make a huge mistake in benchmarking. Clean Win10 install + running only (maybe fraps) the game = not a realistic scenario for any gamer at all. Do Benchmarks with at least 1 Chrome Tab oben, teamspeak active, some background programs and bench again. ryzen will rape i5s in that scenarios. even FXs already proved that they were capable of doing that with i5 of their generation.
    I am not a fanboy of either side. I am just annoyed by the fact that AMDs value gets distorted once again, like it happened with the FX series bringing them a bad reputation and killing competition on the market.
    We need this competition to get fair prices. just look on how GPUs are going nowadays. The prices are dropping like shit, while performance is better (in Nvidias case) then ever before. Still waiting for VEGA to see AMDs turn here.
    I totally agree with your point: Ryzen is currently the best bang for your buck!

    • @user-rj5qn6yw9q
      @user-rj5qn6yw9q 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Vitsark Yeah but the point he's making here is that the intel cpus are doing well because they are using clean win10 installs with nothing but the game running, which isn't realistic at all for most people. Most people will definitely have background applications running, like discord, google chrome, downloading something... all which stress the i5 far more than the ryzen. Of course, i5s will still do better than ryzens on pure gaming, but pure gaming (just the game, perhaps steam running) is much more rare for most people.

      Unlocked i5's still "kinda" make sense, but you'll spend a lot more than on an R5 (simply because to get the overclock, you gotta invest in a beefy cooler). The locked i5's though are toast for the time being. Do not buy. Get an equivalent R5, overclock it to 3.8 on the stock cooler and spend the coins you saved on your GPU.

    • @anonforuz
      @anonforuz 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      One thing at a time. Tho my comment isnt necessarily about me, its about people like me that are building new PCs and have a Budget. People that are likely playing on a 60hz monitor at 1080p. So any gains above 60fps wont be Seen. Makes the Fanboy dickwaving contest even more irrelevant.
      like people arguing how face their Family MiniVans are in a town with Strictly enforced Speed Limits.

    • @Kekex1132
      @Kekex1132 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually getting frame rates over your monitors refresh rate does make a slight difference. Your game will feel somewhat smoother since there's more frames to pick the freshest one from and input lag will be a tiny bit lower + you won't notice any stuttering. It's not huge but it's something. If you're considering upgrading you might want to invest in a monitor with a higher refresh rate if you want your experience to be that extra bit better (you gotta fork out that cash tho).

    • @photonboy999
      @photonboy999 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not a simple issue really. You need to EDUCATE yourself. If you use VSYNC ON and lock to 60FPS great, but in the SAME game you now need to lock to 120FPS VSYNC ON to avoid added stuttering.
      Having a 120Hz monitor and turning VSYNC OFF doesn't guarantee you won't have lots of screen tear either. It's quite complicated.
      Then there's Adaptive VSYNC, GSYNC etc.. as for the comment above somewhere that said with higher you could "pick the freshest one" that's what FASTSYNC does however you must be able to output at least 2x the FPS vs the refresh. That means on a 60Hz monitor you must be outputting at least 120FPS from the GPU and then it takes only the latest frame and ignores the others.

    • @photonboy999
      @photonboy999 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      (I meant 120FPS for a 120Hz monitor which is a lot harder to hit with VSYNC ON than on a 60Hz... requires better hardware... the way comments LINK made my above comment confusing)

    so basically the Ryzen keeps up with intel and won't chock and slow down to a crawl when doing more then just gaming like the Intel I5's while its AMD's first chip on this architecture with 1/10th the budget while Intel has been on there current design for like 5 generations. IPC is the current king, its old tech more cores is the future. We need to quit supporting Intel so they can quit paying off developers to stay in the past. Plus the 0.1 and 1 percent lows matter more where AMD crushes Intel.

  • @CharcharoExplorer
    @CharcharoExplorer 7 ปีที่แล้ว +48

    The IPC difference is only 6-7 %. That is tiny. Considering that architecturally, Ryzen is something like Nehalem/Sandy Bridge Version 2.0 and we can guess at Ryzen 2nd gen simply by looking at Ivy Bridge and Haswell - well it seems like an easy jump for AMD. Their core is better than Intel's Kaby Lake core, 25% smaller and only 6% behind in IPC.
    i5 7600Ks were always kind of shit as value. The important thing is, all locked i5s are dead and long term so is the 7600K and 7700K. Only the G4560 and i7 7700K make sense.

    • @starwarsnerd8549
      @starwarsnerd8549 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alexander Yordanov Why did you say that that 7700k is dead and then in the next sentence say that the G4560 and the 7700k are the only ones that make sense? That's kinda confusing and contradictory.

      In long term all 4-core cpus are going to be dead. There's no magic bullet to make single core much faster than it is right now. So direction of progress is more cores. Though next gen ryzen can make jump in clockspeeds if AMD goes for different manufacturing process. But that might cause AMD compromising TDP advantage at lower clocks which is right now huge advantage outside desktop PCs.

    So Greg, how about now, three months later? With BIOS updates, high frequency RAM, the Ryzen balanced power plan, and even certain patched games like Tomb Raider and Ashes of the Singularity, what do you think?
    To be fair, I think it's a bit premature to accurately predict the performance of a new architecture, especially when games have been optimized more for intel's CPU's for the past, what, 7 years. I think that we need to give Ryzen, software developers and game developers time to optimize for Ryzen as well, don't you think?

    Also don't forget when we are talking budget gaming typically that means the highest end GPU of GTX 1060 or RX 480/580. Anything more powerful isn't really budget gaming.
    And at those levels or lower the GPU will be the bottleneck even at 1080p which allows even the lowly R5 1400 to come into play strictly gaming speaking. Because you will get basically the same FPS with GTX 1060 & RX480/580 and lower on any i5 and any R5. Its even closer in FPS when you go to GTX 1050 and RX 460 levels.
    If you are only gaming would you really pair up an i5 or R5 with a GTX 1080TI? Thats like double the price of your build in just GPU. It way more common to pair it with RX460 to 580 and GTX 1050 to 1060. Or even older generation GPU's.
    And this is a big deal in the used market. And i7-3770 used still sells for around $160. Would you rather have that for $160 or a brand new R5 1400X for $160.
    And don't forget Microcenter in the stats is giving you $50 off when buying Ryzen and motherboard while only $30 off for Intel and motherboard and the Intel boards are usually much higher priced if you are looking to OC.

    • @riffsnreviews
      @riffsnreviews 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah using a 1080ti to relieve any bottlenecks is a convenient excuse, just not a real world scenario... That and the term "bottleneck" being used so loosely by tech tubers...

    • @JimmysTheBestCop
      @JimmysTheBestCop 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah using the 1080TI is great for benchmark testing games and FPS and all that but I really like when they show benchmarks with lower grade GPU's when talking about cheaper processors.
      Pretty sure the #1 GPU on Amazon right now is the GTX 1050 TI and it goes as low as $115. I know the TX 470 is way better but they typically cost way more unless there is a rebate than its 10-12 weeks of waiting.
      The last 470 I bought for a build was $150 ASUS strix but had a $30 mail in rebate so it was worth the wait. But all of the other 470's at the time didn't have a rebate and were going for $160-170. And it was sub $550 build so I would have had to go GTX 1050 TI if not for that huge rebate.

    First of all, vast majority of titles are not properly optimized for AMD and 8+ cores. They are optimized for 4 cores + 4 hype-threaded ones which are "weaker" than normal ones, so 4 cores really. Secondly theres been multiple of tests and depending on a game ryzen cpus are not being utilized to 80% on double titans. While cpu and gpu can certainly be a bottleneck game engine can be as well. You don't even have to look far, people been using cities skylines as CPU benchmark for a while even though the game is so broken you can have such results as less than 40% gpu utilization, less than 50% cpu utilization across all 8 cores . . . yet still below 20fps and visible game speed slowdown. (Literally tested yesterday)
    Speaking of cost to performance ratio, wait what ? you use what? a benchmark of an i5 at 5GHZ and ryzen at 4ghz and then speak of IPC ? IPC you have to measure when both chips are exactly the same frequency, Thats one, the second thing is you can play comfortably with your ryzen R5@4.0ghz with a stock Wraith cooler, yet somehow funnily you don't add the price of a properly big cooler or 240mm AIO as intel chip temperature skyrockets around 4.9 depending on your silicon lottery luck.
    Otherwise well done.

    I am a bit confused by how techtubers are using the term "IPC" recently. Doesn't it stand for "instructions per cycle"? And isn't Ryzen pretty much on par with or very close to Kabylake in terms of IPC?
    The reason why Ryzen appears to suck here is that it has a lower clock speed - read: fewer cycles per second than an i5 7600K, but does about as many instructions per cycle and therefore fewer instructions overall on a single core.
    I already found it weird when people called the 6700K the "IPC King", when it had exactly the same IPC as any other Skylake i7.

    From what I've been seeing, quite a bit of the discrepancy seems to be due to early UEFI firmwares, and earlier microcode releases (which creates large variances between different motherboards at the moment). newer firmware releases and certain motherboards seem to help ryzen chips greatly, eventually, this will even out, but until the microcode and uefi firmwares stabilize, there will be significant differences.

I think people are getting antsy and reach for anything they can in order to call you out, even though you didn't reference price to performance in any of your videos concerning the R5 till now. Much like pissing off an ex. If you ever have the time or feel like doing an R5 review, that'd be good. Comparing it with rendering, photo editing 'if you do such' and overall gaming. Maybe making a comparison of the 1600X in this case vs your 6700k? unless you've upgraded and I'm further behind than I thought. Once again, thank you and have a great weekend.

    I appreciate your position, I'm not a fanboy of either. I am about to upgrade from an ancient AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition. Originally before the unveiling of Ryzen I was gonna switch back to Intel because the performance was always more responsive IMO. The game has changed though and now I'm deciding on either X299 or X399 (Threadripper) for the build I'm currently working on. Whichever of the two $1,000 CPUs that ultimately performs best will be the one I go with. That's looking to be the 1950X right now but I want to see more about how each works with water cooling due to heat output, stability, longevity of use, etc.

    Man, you are still not getting it. Ryzen it's all about frametimes, search for reviews with 0,1% measurements and compare them with i5 results. Having 73 fps average vs 71 doesn't make any difference, but 25 vs 50 fps in 0,1% times really affects the gameplay fluidity. Btw, I am not a ryzen fanboy, currently I have an Intel processor and am waiting to the 6 cores i5 to come out, to decide what will I buy as an upgrade

      @potatoesmashymash5836 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      This is very true. While I5's are a little bit better, they are starting to exhibit frame stuttering, symptoms the ryzen chips aren't showing or perhaps not nearly as much.

      Not only does he include reviews with 1% and 0.1% fps, but he also says Ryzen is better for the money and has better performance for productivity, just that i5 does have better absolute gaming performance.

    this has me excited...I just built an i5-6500 with a 980ti april of last year, and my secondary rig (aka a 6 year old gaming laptop) is on the fritz so I've been poking about at something to replace it (or to replace my main rig and I just plop this current rig onto the other desk). At this current point, my eyes are set on the 1600x for the cpu....gpu I may just plop a 1050ti in temporarily since I only have a 1080p panel on the other desk (and with mining frenzy in full swing most other gpus are dust in the wind or severely over priced like how ddr4 memory became over the past year. I think I paid maybe 50-60 bucks tops on a 16gb kit of LPX 2666mhz)...my 980ti still has plenty of life left to live in my current 1440p setup... I do a lot of dual screen multitasking when gaming...youtube, social media etc etc.
    I'm SOOOO thankful I now have another option to consider. When the first wave of P4 came out I went full AMD (back in 2002) with the thunderbird 1400! AND ATI gpus until intel and nvidia came back strong with the C2D 8800gtx back in 2007 (rip bank account) and have since been Intel/Nvidia. Until we see what the actual Vega gaming cards are capable of i'll likely still stay nvidia but who knows. Sorry for the long winded text vomit!

    Salazar studio, at 8:15 you said the 1700x doesn't offer too much more for you than the 7700k does at the price point. Could you elaborate for me a little bit? I am stuck between those 2 for my build...

    • @Venylynn
      @Venylynn 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      He uses Premiere Pro, which is heavily tied to clock speed rather than the extra cores. I would go 1700X if I were you, because plenty of other things use those cores and a 7700K will struggle.

  • @reidefe5311

    when would people understand that there is a big difference between IPC and frequency, i5 7500 performs on par with the 4c/8t ryzen even worse sometimes in gaming simply because of its lower clock speeds, that is a really big factor as to why ryzen loses alot in gaming benchmarks to intel lineups of processor and not mainly because of it lacking in IPC , a good way to test this is by comparing the 1400 vs the 7400 preferably at same clock speeds, in almost all the benchmarks the 7400 performs worse and this is mainly because of it lower clock speed, so yeah ryzen is not deficient in IPC but rather at clock speeds.

    • @AwesomePossum510
      @AwesomePossum510 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Ryzen is behind in IPC (around 7% compared to skylake if I remember correctly) but the 1400 also has SMT, which does help

      i have a r5 1400 and have done multiple comparisons against the 4690 at 3.8 ghz, and the ryzen chip out performs the haswell by a substantial margin on single test perfomance on cb and so many other benchmarks, clock for clock with low latency and high frequency ram, ryzen performs on par with skylake's single threaded performance so i dont really know what you are saying

    • @reidefe5311
      @reidefe5311 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      jokes on you if you think clock for clock that haswell competes with ryzen, get yourself a ryzen chip and maybe then you would see the margin on sinlge threaded performance

      +R T I mean, everybody fails to understand that it's good then, these chips are AMDs first 14 nm processes, just as Intels broadwell and that only means, it has a good path for optimization (just as haswell, skylake and kabylake) that's why it is not perfect and feels like 2010 again.

    Hey Dude, keep your chin up, your content, approach, and reasoning are sound. At the end of the day that's what counts. It's never been about team red vs blue/green, it's about the quality and performance of the product. Each team, for each product, has its pros and cons. All three have released products that were fundamentally flawed in one way or another. So each consumer must put forth his or her due diligence to determine which product, from either team, best suits their individual needs.
    Thank You S.S. for your efforts, I look fwd to your future content.

    • @rikio2k

      I don't think that would be a proper representation of what each CPU brings to the table though. Both CPU's were clocked to their max OC, which is fair imo. Now if one CPU was stock and one was OC'd that would be unfair.

      +skylinx gaming That's got to be the dumbest thing I've read.
      Both chips should be clocked to their safe maximums, on voltage and temperatures to give the best representation of what can be achieved by people when they buy the chip.
      Had he NO2 cooled the intel for 7ghz and used a potato on the ryzen for 3ghz id agree but as it stands this is showing the most regularly achievable overclocks for both CPU's with pretty standard air cooling.

    :D I sort of like the way you put your ideas out there in spite of all the haters. Huge thumbs up from me.....And both of your videos about R5 (along with linus and hardware canucks) helped me decide to go with R5 (1600 - no X) for my new pc. Trying to go for a all-around build on a budget so I am looking at R5 1600 + RX580 (used to be a battle between rx 480 and 1060), and put it on a B350 amd chipset. The only thing I might change now is decison between B350 or X370 because I would like to have an option of getting those fast SSDs somewhere down the line, but B350 might not have enough PCIe slots and lanes available.

    Hey, I'm about to buy a very budget oriented gaming build. Should I use $300 more to get a R5 1400 build or should I buy a $125 i5 3470 pre built with an os and everything and sticking a 1050 ti sc OR should I get that R5 1400 build (no os) 1050 ti sc build for $300 more? I would really appreciate feedback on this, because I really don't know what to do.

    Salazar, don't worry about the naysaysers. I completely understood what you were talking about on your previous videos and I chose Ryzen 2 months ago because I do video editing, conversion, streaming and gaming. I think it's unnecessary to explain and re-explain things that have already been intelligently and plainly stated.
    But I wish someone would do in-game tests about the microstuttering I experienced on my Intel build that seems absent on my Ryzen build. I have certain games like GTA V that had an irritating amount of microstuttering on my Intel rig that I do not see on my Ryzen build. And honestly, if I had to choose between more FPS with microstuttering and less FPS with smooth gameplay, I will always choose the latter!
