"If aint fix dont broke it" - greg 2024
I have to tell myself all the time don''t touch something that's already working.
words to live by
Yup thats what he said good job
That really should be everyone's life Moto. The amount of times Ive actually caused problems thinking I knew an easy way to improve something.
Cyberpower should be ashamed of themselves for selling a Gen 1 Ryzen system with a single stick of RAM - that's probably a 20% performance hit. But nooooooo, they had to spend the extra $3 a dual-channel kit of the same capacity would cost on . . . an LED strip.
Yeah another stick of RAM would be recomended for that rig.
@@j.p.h.8126 yeah at least 2 8 gig sticks would have been nice
I have a CyberPower PC and it's been amazing, their customers service was awesome when I needed help. But this was my personal experience, others may have a different view on this.
To be fair this is a 7 year old base model
@@coreykirkpatrick4392 its still running windows 10 so any help is a plus

Ah yes, the beautiful world of IT
-Computer sits on "in shelf" until user answers
-Computer then joins back of repair queue
haha lol, i know how it feel
"you're the computer guy, dont you know the password?" - someone probably
In all seriousness, if bitlocker isn't enabled on that drive, there are programs you can boot from a USB drive that will create new admin accounts on Windows that you can log into if you're locked out of it.
There's one full proof way around that password. I've had to use it numerous times because of exactly your comment. Idk if it works with W11 but it does with w7-10

@@johnt.848 you can't argue with the results. He did show great temps while running AIDA64 for a long time.
Say Greg I went over to my uncle Ripps house the other day, and he was all happy that he had fixed his computer, he really doesn't have that much computer knowledge and I asked him how did you figure it out he said oh this little old Mexican kid on youtube taught me how to do it and I was like what are you talking abou?t He showed me the video and it was you, lol.
You have a new fan he's almost sixty years old And he has been watching your videos for the past couple weeks now that you've taught him something. Goes to show that you know you reach out to people of all ages and all demographics. Keeping on keeping on bud, have a good one.
Just a guess on my part but I think Greg is Cuban-American-someone correct me if i'm wrong.
LOOOL. I do have Mexican relatives. Our paternal family is from Spain :-)
I had a vga debug lite issue suddenly. System wouldn’t boot. and after swapping GPUs and minimizing the system with no luck, I remembered the Greg vids where he clears CMOS. Yes! Danged if that didn’t do it!
You say almost 60 as if that is old and old people are stupid.
yes, i make money because of Greg lol, i am not went to IT school or something. but i learned from Greg, Jayz, and several other youtubers.
now i have a passive income as coulege student by building and upgrading computer, sometimes laptop also
This is my first time watching through one of these Greg, I’ve seen them but not watched. I like the format you have here, I think it’s well done 👍
Thanks, man! Hope all is well. Glad to see ya pumping out content again!
even older, ancient systems running ddr3 ram see MASSIVE performance improvements..simply by switching to an ssd.
Resurected an old sony all in one with an ssd, ram upgrade ans wifi upgrade. Can attest to this.
Hell, my dad's old Core2 laptop saw a massive improvement with a cheap 2.5" SSD.
Laptops especially see an improvement as 2.5" mechanical drives are usually 5400 RPM and designed with low power in mind so they are even slower than their desktop counterparts.
Holy hell that HDD was full. Probably didn't help with programs crashing and being weird. Windows does *not* like a full drive.
With that little of space left causes problems because Windows wants to have some space set aside as virtual RAM. This is more evident with the single stick of (I think) 8GB or 16GB. Which is honestly just not enough to play a lot of newer games. 32GB is always my recommended size.
@@olandersnake can u name me 1 of those game that recommend 32gb ram. just built my 1st pc and interested in those kind of games. i usually just play fps games
@@Farhan-ec7dx Did you not put in 32GB? It's around $100 or less total for 32GB. $55-$115 for DDR4 and DDR5
Even if the game doesn't need all 32GB, if your ram usage is near 16GB or slightly over, when that's your total system ram, you'll get stuttering and computer will be less responsive
@Farhan-ec7dx it's not games that recommend it. It's the usage of having the games that use 8-10GB, and then Windows itself, your graphics card software, your peripherals controller software, motherboard software, steam/epic games/blizzard software, Discord, and quite a few of the competitive games have launcher software as well. So many gaming computers that I service will have 5-8GB used just turning them on and logging into Windows. Then you boot up a game, and POW you are using up your RAM. Then you get to enjoy random stuttering due to you C: being told to be used as virtual RAM, which even the fastest SSDs are not quick enough to be RAM. Might as well "download more ram." You can probably get by with 16GB, but to have some decent coverage, 32GB is the best option.
Best PC series on YT, thank you Greg!
Thank you for watching!
really liked that greg just did the minimum upgrade as this is fix or flop, not fix or pimp
I whole heartedly agree with Greg, I've built every computer I've ever owned, and the single biggest "quality of life" upgrade was the SSD. Every time you install Windows, install programs/games, move large files, open programs/games, back-up files, etc.,etc. the speed boost not to mention the superior boot times, it's lovely and will absolutely make an old computer "feel" new better than any other upgrade. It pays for itself constantly!
I get the average person not being aware and booting off a HDD, but it's crazy to see people with gaming PC's still running HDD's as a boot drive.
Fancy meeting you here Mr "GameBench" LOL
To be fair Windows installs the boot loader on the spinning hard drive or your SATA SSD or your bulk storage NVMe /to this day/. Even if you install it to the correct NVMe. I literally unplug everything except the drive I'm installing Windows on before I load the Windows install media.
@@milescarter7803 I do that now. One time during a fresh install of windows I had 5 hard drives plugged in and it spread the install over 5 drives. A real mess! So now I unplug any drives that are not for the OS
@zellar1 damn seriously? How is that possible?
I've installed a fresh version of Windows in a newly built(yet slightly older from 2018-2019) PC with 2 nvme SSD's and a sata 2.5in SSD installed, as well as other pc builds, and never had any issues like that except for sometimes having to unplug any sata drives before hand.
@@T.Lspitz Not really sure what the heck happened but it was weird. Took me a while to delete all the OS stuff off each drive

Absolutely agree! With an SSD, even 15 year old PCs are still very usable for everyday usage
Love this series, as well as your Discord server! Learned lots from here as well as your server.
I very much appreciate that!
What a way to start a Friday. A good ol' cup of coffee and some Greg :)
This is a great series. Hope you keep it going for a long time.
That's the plan! Thanks for the support!
It's not time to sleep. It's time to watch Greg.
I remember when SSDs first became a thing, and they were pretty expensive at the time. Regardless, I purchased a 128GB Intel SSD and swapped out the platter drive in the MSI netbook I had at the time. The difference in boot and app loading was stunning.
When SSD's were still relatively new tech, they were quite expensive; I can see why someone back then might've wanted to run a hard drive. But the prices of SSD's have come down so dramatically over the years that there's simply no need to use them anymore
When Ryzen came out, they were already cheap enough, at least to use them as a boot drive.
such an easy fix! good video!
You've taught Raymond...WELL.
Just wanted to give a shout out, I love these videos. I fix PCs on the side myself and love learning about new problems. Keep up the good fight!

What a fantastic video to wake up to. Time for the daily dose of fixing computers.
Thanks for the support!
Greg, you were SPOT ON on this one! When you stated it only had a Hard Disk drive, my jaw pretty much dropped to the floor! I can't believe in this day and age, anybody would just use a regular HD for their OS other than just for storage of games, audio files, etc...! Other than the loose air cooler, good job!
Somebody who doesn't have the knowledge to properly mount the CPU cooler also won't know that an SSD is so much faster than a HDD.
I'd actually blame Cyberpower for cheaping out on this.
What about that sagging GPU?
i have a b350m bazooka in my first ryzen build. good job msi for still supporting it with the newest 5000 series chips like the 5800x3d and giving it resize bar. awesome to see!
Great job
Always enjoy the fix or flop series(your other ones as well). Kind of like PC Sherlock Holmes novelettes.
Storage upgrade was absolutely the right choice, there. And for anyone else who is booting off of a mechanical hard drive, even if you can't afford an M.2 even a Sata ssd will be a huge improvement
Good Job Greg : ) x
fav part so far is when raymond tells you to check the CPU. Made me chuckle lol. Coudlnt even wait to finish the vid to comment. finishing now
My PC is probably 8 years old now, and last year I decided to make a few upgrades to extend it's life. The cooler was done out of necessity as the CPU was really maxing out temp wise when it was under heavy load.
Once that was done I decided it was time to bite the bullet and replace my HDD. My MB does not have any M.2 slots so the only option is a 2.4" SSD.
I bought a Crucial one as I have always had good experiences with their products (my PC ram is Crucial and my M.2 expansion in my PS5 is as well). It comes with software to clone my HDD onto the SSD (well it came with a link to download it). The process was incredibly easy with only one piece of software needing a licence update (Photoshop).
The speed difference between my HDD and the SSD is crazy. The boot up process was getting longer and longer with the HDD. Even when you got into Windows, it still took forever before you can open things like internet browsers. Now everything is almost instantaneous. I kept the 1TB HDD in the system to keep all my music on it, and as I bought a 1TB SSD, everything else can be kept on that. I still have around 500gb free on both drives.
I was an SSD sceptic, but no longer.
there is no bigger single upgrade you can possibly make to the overall function of a PC than upgrading an HDD to an SSD.
@@ElysaraCh fully agree.
You should have gone with a pci-express m.2 nvme card
@@BrandensOutdoorChannel Except I don't have any spare slots. It is a micro ATX board so only has two slots, both of which I am using. Plenty of spare SATA ports tho.
Have you ever tried booting Windows from a floppy disk? While Windows boots, I used to say I'll have dinner and maybe wash my car, and maybe...
I'd love to see the return of PCDC :)
That was fast! And I definitely don't mean the original Windows boot up from that HDD.
I like this one, nice and easy. They all dont need to be multiday fixes!
Nice fix! Yeah, it was likely just the CPU fan clip being off that was the issue with this one. I totally agree about not using a HDD for a boot drive as well. When I'm building a PC I never use HDDs anymore. Either a small boot NVMe and a SATA SSD for storage or a large NVMe.
3:07 I wasn’t ready for this part 😂😂😂
I LOVE this videos😍😍😍😍
thanks greg!
Great video sir as usual, I would agree with the other people commenting, you should let the owner know having only one stick of ram is a travesty.
When friends ask me what to watch to learn more about building or troubleshooting PCs, it's always the same answer: Greg's Fix or Flop. I frigging love this series. Keep it alive, Greg. You're doing awesome!
Thanks, as always, my dude!
idk why this series is so satisfying to watch, but i really wish they were a bit more regularly uploaded. but oh well beggers can't be choosers
Should’ve upgraded that RAM config, Greg! 😉 The storage upgrade will be a massive difference for the customer, though.
I noticed the logo on the front panel also still had the protective plastic on it. 😂 The single channel RAM also asked for an upgrade but that's an easy one the owner can do themselves.
Nice repair.
His face when he turned to look at Raymond😂
Feels like flop because I believe they gave it to you just to get upgrade..
Fans not spinning is called “silent mode” when the gpu starts to warm up it will turn fans on the slowly increase under temp sense and chip load indicators
This video is a testament to how much social skill is required by computer technicians to get to the bottom of customer's complaints haha
I specifically have an m.2 for windows, and whatever actually must use that, and a 4tb wd black SE HDD for "most' games/storage. It works out brilliantly.
one possibility of spinning rust drives is it slows down as the disk motor dies and you actually end up having timed out iops that leaves the system hanging and retrying then using more cpu cycles generating more heat.
One of the main problems with speed seems to be the HDD being so full. The OS will be searching like hell for its component parts to start up. I use a simple principle of never letting my HDDs getting over half full and removing old junk files, then optimising.
Wouldn't have surprised me if it wasn't the plastic motherboard mounts that had broken. Seen that happen on some motherboards because they were just made too short and that caused more pressure than necessary being applied by the fan which weakened the tabs over time. Some AM3 boards were really good at that especially.
I have been following your channel for the a few years now up here in Canada, wondering if your still using a Mac to edit your videos? Just curious.
Attention Greg: Raymond is a keeper!
Can't believe you didn't at least give her a quick dual-channel RAM upgrade! ☹
Also, did you remove the BIOS password for her? Might have been a kindness.
This isn't "Upgrade or Flop." You're more than welcome to provide a dual-channel kit.
@@GregSalazar 😀 Fair point!
@@GregSalazar Fair point! 😀 It's just seeing a single stick of RAM these days gets my OCD going ... 🙂 Please keep up the good work, love your vids!
Ouch, holding the M.2 by the gold contacts!?! Lot of finger oils get in there and not good for contacts.
Prebuilt wit 1 single RAM stick on a first gen Ryzen.. And a HDD , this SSD was a necessary update. 🙂
Definitely a weird one, I don't know how those clips got bent that much unless it was being removed frequently...At least you didn't have to pull your hair out trying to diagnose it! lol
Hy Greg I just want to say thank u your videos helped me solve a gpu problems that have been bugging me for a year now I don't have to buy a new gpu
One big issue I see from before you added the M.2 is that their drive was too full. That said adding an M.2 is indeed a great upgrade. I recommend to the owner to but still another M.2 (say 2TB) so they can load their games on it as well. I just got a 4TB M.2 and what a great investment.
I can attest to how huge a difference moving from an HDD to an SSD can make. I have ad admittedly very old system (we're talking 2008 Dell hardware) that I was using as a domain controller (please don't hate on me). I only needed it for the DC role, so it didn't need to really do a lot. I didn't really care if it was dog slow, as my domain is only a few computers thick. The story is that old computer was running a moderately newer HDD. I purchased a brand-new custom-built server as a Hyper-V server and was doing to decommission that old relic I was using, but I decided, for grins and giggles, to put in an SSD to see what that would do. Darn it if that didn't put some zip into that old machine! I am running Windows Server 2022 on that thing, and it is cranking along like it's still in its prime. It's running as a backup DC and DNS server on my network. I'm probably going to fully decommission it soon, but I cannot tell you the remarkable difference moving from a platter-based hard drive to a solid-state drive made in that li'l machine's performance.
I do love those sk hynix nvme used one on my desktop and steam deck and now have one on my laptop. Not sire but they are cheaper and works well
the hdd is in the red its way to full, probably never defragged, as slow as hdd's are compared to SSD and nvme, a heavily fragmented drive will slow it down even more.
I like watching filler episodes. This is definitely one of it. I'd love to put your quote on a shirt btw!
Wouldn't call this a filler. It's another viewer's rig. Another issue. Another resolution. They can't all be crazy difficult. It's the nature of accepting random, free gigs for folks in the area.
The first gen Ryzen CPU's weren't all that stable, AFAIK. A possible bios update should be checked for, in case wanting a future more stable CPU upgrade by the customer.
Not much free space on the HDD, but probably a HDD failure incoming if it was flaky booting from the HDD. Did you use CrystalDisk to look at HDD history and info?
It wasn't flaky booting. It was just slow to boot - which is a common HDD thing :-)
All hail glorious hard drive boot time xD
Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut Extreme has been my go to paste for a while.
Kirito wallpaper ❤❤❤😊😊😊
Haha pointing out too there was only about 4% HDD space left, hence terrible OS boot time initially 😁 Did them a solid putting the NVME in 👊👍
I'll have to watch this later after my test prep. Thanks Greg! I love Fridays.
Best of luck on that upcoming test!
@@GregSalazar Thanks man
Yea, depends on the person. Someone may create more issues along the way while checking bent pins.
You know what’s crazy based on actual analysis data based on what computer and performance levels they are experienced to , most people never got passed cell phone or old Mac or dell pc
Yes i agree with Raymond....check pins and socket while the cooler was off.
Another RAM stick then all is good in the world
The rig POSTed just fine before that hahah. So it wasn't really needed.
I see Cyberpowerpc is a fan of using a single stick of ram. Same thing I discovered with my brother's prebuild from them. I did at least get him upgraded and suddenly his games gamed again.
remember when i first went from a HDD to an SSD, MAJOR game changer. don't necessarily need a m.2 since you prob wont notice much of a difference between that and an SSD. so if ya wanna save TONS, just get a HUGE SSD instead of spending twice as much on a m.2
I really don't understand how they can call this kind of junk a gaming PC. It's old and outdated, sure, but not what they should be advertising as a “current viable gaming PC”. I think they're just playing on the fact that a lot of people don't know much about hardware and think “gaming = performance”, which lets these companies get away with selling inferior hardware at inflated prices. They should at least call it a “legacy gaming PC” so people who don't know the difference know what they're actually buying because there are plenty of uninformed customers who don't know it any better about hardware, performance or how a PC works, so they buy junk online labeled "GAMING PC" believing it is a good performing machine to use for playing newer games. I just hate this terminology to begin with for advertising something that isn't really what it says it does tbh, also referring to the PC you showed.
That HDD was full (8:28) It shows 35GB free. I am wondering if Windows was tasked with something, a compressed archive or something that exceeded that, would it go in to frenzy mode.
Cyberturd pre-builts, lol
I shortly saw the HDD Hardrive and it look like it was a straight red line which means it needs to be clean and free space, this is why it was so long to load windows.
My opinion, you should have used a 1 tb ssd and cloned the data over. That’s. True plug and play scenario for the owner. No need to reinstall everything.
LOL at the cpu cooler
I could be wrong, but I don't think the RX 580 came with zero fan function. They should be on at idle speed and ramp up under use.
This one definitely has its fans turn off at idle and ramp up under load. Confirmed visually while stress testing.
I think the main problem was the CPU cooler not being secured but the other was the amount of disk space left on the HDD. Only 34.8GB on a 1TB drive. I would bet if 100GB were deleted, it would boot significantly faster, although still slow. Even after Windows finally loads, it will make it run slower with that small a reserve space. If it were SATA or nvme, it might react even worse.
Being 90% full could be another reason why the mechanical drive was so slow.
HDDs are super slow to boot Windows regardless, but yes. Clutter doesn't help!
@@GregSalazar Yup. I always heard that a mechanical drive will start to slow down once it reaches half full.
@@GregSalazar I upgraded an 8th gen intel I7 from a mechanical to a M.2. The boot time went from 45 seconds to 10 seconds lol.
My brother was running his pc os through a hard drive and I can concur that after upgrading his storage to a m.2 from a hard disk drive his pc ran so much faster it was night and day difference.
So I hate the clip mechanism for AMD coolers. It's probably not going anywhere but it's such a pain to install that I'm not surprised that one of the retention arms bent.
Not sure if anyone mentioned it here but MSI cards usually tend to run no fans while idle in Windows in silent mode. Had the same with a 2070 Msi Armor card!
All cards for probably over a decade now dont start running fans until the card hits something like 60c by default.
i seen that the old hard drive is almost full that could cause some slow down as well specially if it has not be defragged
Lets go!!
