I love that you put in a progress bar for the sponsor bit. I'm in Canada, we don't have CarVertical. I fully understand the need for a sponsor and why they take up video time, I'm just glad to be able to fast forward through to the rest of the vid because the sponsor is not relevant to me. Good on you lads for that.
Anyone out there that is thinking of carrying out a DIY oil repair like these guys it's always good practice to replace the cambelt when you are there and NEVER reuse a cambelt that has been soaked in oil you are just asking for trouble
Also the cam seal/tensioner/water pump while you're in there, extra £100 to potentially save you hours of future work or potentially even your engine engine in the case of cambelt failure in some cases Makes me think they don't intend giving these guys the opportunity to live that long 👀 and I'm here for it 🫡

Hate to break it to you but it’s going to need a tad bit more than that. I’m not being a knob I just know from experience of having 4 E46s , 1 E36, 1 E39 and an E90 😂
really informative video lads! only thing I would add regarding injectors is that it's usually best to calculate the injector flow rate needed before choosing injectors as just going for the biggest flow rate can sometimes lead to problems tuning the idle and low load conditions as injectors have a minimum injection time until they become "non-linear" and once below this minimum injector time they become unpredictable in how much fuel they provide for the time they're "open".
As an automotive electrician, most of the time I opt to crimp. Much easier, mechanically more reliable and seal with glued heatshrink. Butt splice is what I use, little metal cylinders, not the ones with red plastic. RS components part number 178-7198
My mate had a starlet turbo around 15 years ago and i had a cooper s supercharged we used to blast around london and its a roads early hours of the morning (before average speed and anpr i may add) Truly great memories , happy i got a chance to experience those times that i think was the last era of motoring freedom in this country !
TDC is definitely the best car channel on TH-cam. I love that you guys have gone down the Wheeler Dealers route of stopping to explain what you're doing, but not only that you're showing your struggles and mistakes too. I'd love it if you guys put some extra explanation / more footage of you actually doing the work on TDC2.
Guys, no discredit to anyone else but this channel of yours is the best car related option from the AutoAlex multiverse. And Jack and Ethan a close second with the non car All The Gear. Keep it up!
I spend alot of time wiring and if i was to give suggestions i would say to chuck out the soldering iron and get some open barrel crimps uninsulated ones. Use those tk make a strong mechanical splice and then slide some double wall heatshrink over the joint. THIS STYLE of crimps when done properly are easier, faster and more reliable than a solder joint. Dont waste an time with any kind of insulated crimps.
Finding this style of video with cars getting ordinary maintenance jobs done with the explanations of what you are doing and why you are doing it very enjoyable.
I'm not an electrician. I'm not good at soldering. But one thing that helped me immensely was a quality soldering iron. I got a Hakko soldering station and it changed my game from blobby, melty garbage to professional looking work.
In reference to the “easy to fit this part I’ve got, just haven’t had time.” I came across a Fiat 500 on facebook marketplace the other day that was listed as “mechanic says it needs a clutch release bearing. £25 part, easy to fit”
I’ve always been accustomed to v8’s but switching sides to small displacement and turbos is much more engaging and fun to drive. Loving this series! Perhaps the sequel could be the same with NA hatches and testing various myths for hp along the way.
Always amazes me how there is always a specialist for anything in the UK. What's that? As an auto-elec, I would always advise to use crimp connectors whenever possible instead of soldering in a car. PIDG/Butt crimps from RS are perfect for your needs
I’d always crimp a connection, vibration in cabling can cause dry joints. But an easy way to solder is get a big washer and 2x little croc clips to clamp the two wires, pre tin wires join then put together and heat.
In Germany you get a free Tank from Toyota. They call it back because of Rust. I got between 105 and 110 HP in my Starlet with a few modifications on the n/a Engine with the Glanza s Engine Management (120 HP) Nice to See that you can Play with the big Brother ;)
Edwin you can't put the timing marks on the pulley and the belt. If you rotate the engine or pulley the belt is still going to line up. You need to put a mark on the pulley and the casing, or just something that doesn't move. SO then you know if the timing is out.
I think the idea is that the crank is on a woodruff key and so can't be out of position, and the belt was ziptied to the cam pulley, so in effect it limits the possibility of anything out of sync
J-hook the wires that you intend to solder. It makes a good mechanical bond and holds the wires together while you solder. Oh and don't forget to put the heat shrink on before you solder.. my favorite thing to do lol
As a normal electrician, slap some Wagos in there and call it a day! but no the solder shrink tubes are just the job and less hassle and stress plus just neat
I might be wrong but I've been told these 4efe and 5efe engines have something called a non-interferant cambelt which basically means if a cambelt snaps or slips the internals of the engine will never fail I.e pistons hitting the valves.
