The nostalgia is real lol, and thats okay. When ive gone back and play these I would def choose the new games NOW any day, but they hold special places in our hearts. For its time when games were simple and u got lost in hours just doing combos, transformations and then doing combos just with different hair just cuz it looks cool lol, i did this for HOURS since obviously not much content like now. When I was a kid I played Budokai 3 a lot, as I was a dumb kid I didn't know how to use the specials, so I ended the campaign just spreading punches and kicks. Every now and then I would accidentally do something and ask myself "how the hell did I do this?"
I beat the first Budokau game multiple times before I figured out how to charge ki. So if I wanted to transform, I was punching the hell out of enemies.
When I was 12 I was a combo master, cancel combo's, transformation combo's, etc... Now I'm 28 and I suck really hard going back. Makes one wonder about age.
Budokai 2 is one of my very first PS2 games i ever owned, so the story mode does have a special place in my heart, even though apparently most people on the internet hate it lol
Same !!! It's also the very first DBZ game I ever owned. Personally, I LOVE the story mode because since I had a big brother and my best friend living close we could play the story mode as a team, and it would be even funnier and better than the basic story since we already knew it. Budokai 2 will always be my favourite of the intial budokai series.
I had Budokai 1 before I got Budokai 2, and I’m very glad they mixed it up. Dragon World is probably my favorite story mode in all dragon ball fighting games.
Budokai 2's dragon world is awesome to me so I cant relate lol. I liked the puzzle board stuff, there are obviously some things that can be improved on though. there are some events that are weird or never happened in the actual story so they couldve made a lot more what if stuff so sagas could play out differently. racing to defeat cell before he reaches his final form across the board wouldve been cool, with more maps to explore n so on.
What I've always wanted out of a DBZ is a game based around "what-if". I want it to give us branching paths that could lead to unique stories. I can only play Raditz to Buu so many times. Like, what if when Vegeta asks Goku to join him you actually can. Or what if Goku did die on Namek, how does that effect the story. Trunks doesn't go back in time, or goes to the wrong time and has to play out from there. Things that will put you in a familiar situation, but give you the choice to drastically change the story. Make winning or losing fights effect the story.
Budokai 3 was definitely the best of the original trilogy. Its had the most characters and content. I remember liking the story mode and flying around the map. Unfortunately, even though they let you choose a handful of characters, Goku definitely has the biggest story mode. I also remember that it could be a little lengthy, so trying to unlock things could take a while. Some events could only be done at certain times, so if you missed one, you had to start all over again. Budokai 2, while a much bigger game than B1, suffered from a less than great storymode. The boardgame style story mode is interesting, but it becomes long and tedious. Also the fact that Frieza and Cell randomly pop up several times is just kind of odd. Neat idea, poor execution.
@@mrnygren2 Even 2D pictures would have been better than what we got. It was literally just a single static character image on the side of the screen with dialogue and sound effects. Played Budokai 2 the most growing up so my favorite for nostalgia but a couple years ago I played 3 and it honestly impressed me so much from the fighting mechanics. In addition to the teleport behind someone at 1 ki bar cost, you can time dodges to your opponent's punches and kicks which adds another level of complexity to fights
I have found memories with the first Budokai, I had bought it a week after release, and while I played it, my apartment was having construction done, it was a father and son duo workers, and the son whenever he took breaks, would play with me, it was quite fun since. It's a core memory that has never left me.
the one thing i hate about Budokai 3 is the dragon rush....its a cool concept idea, but the animations of it get boring really fast. and the fact the CPU loves to abuse it doesnt help either
I know I didn't talk about it a whole lot, but dragon rush did feel excessive sometimes. But it also felt like the AI in some fights basically just ignored it, so it was super inconsistent.
I still like the animation (and sounds!), but the CPU overusing it, me being unable to consistently (ab)use it, and how long it takes you out of the actual fight really makes it feel outdated. Minus the Dragon Rush, Budokai 3 is "a perfect" DBZ fighting game, imo.
The immense blemish on Budokai 3 that I feel keeps the game from the legendary status people give it is Dragon Rush. Forced rock paper scissors mechanics are never a good idea in fighting games and the frequency with which it comes up as well as being required in order to pull off pretty much every ultimate attack is ridiculous and just makes it frustrating when all you wanna do is see the move used. It also singlehandedly ruins Dragon Arena if you're not cheesing it on world tournament, because the higher level CPUs will frame 1 enter hyper mode in every single fight and do nothing but use the super armor to try and get in to initiate Dragon Rush, making the entire gameplay loop be about how to avoid that one thing. They may also read your inputs but I'm not entirely sure of that, but regardless needing to win RPS 3 times in a row to either hurt the enemy or not take a ton of damage and have the CPU do it over and over and over is a total buzzkill to the experience
It’s such a fucking shame that Ultimate Tenkaichi suffers from this but a lot worse. That game had the best graphics, a very slept on and underrated soundtrack, and character customization that is in some areas better than Xenoverse (characters could actually talk, you can change colors on all of your clothes, use fighting styles of mentors, change auras, and they had tails that moved.) It easily had the potential to be one of the best DBZ games of all the time yet they fucking blew it with that god awful ‘fighting system’. It still pisses me off that there could’ve been a Budokai Tenkaichi 4 on PS3/Xbox and they chose to make a game with the depth of “rock paper scissors”
@@MegaShingo97 HOW? Sorry, but how can you like that mechanic? Gameplay wise you just push one button and wait and it's not even interesting to look at, because besides the finisher every single animation is the exact same for every character, it's super boring. @@JackOfen Sure the rock/paper/scissors mechanic is bad especially when you want to do a final flash or warp kamehameha at the end but i can't get enough of these animation for me they're pretty entertaining
This video took me right back... What I noticed is there was so much love in bigger titles during the PS2 era. The fun minigames, loading screens, menus, etc. Developers were so daring and creative. I feel like everything is uniform now, in one way or another, while that loving attention only shows itself in some indie titles.
Budokai 1 was honestly one of the most groundbreaking fighting games based on a show/manga. I have more fun playing this game more than almost every other serious fighting game that was out at the time aside from Tekken
You're making me want to replay them again! I liked the board game setup of part 2. check out dragon ball kai ultimate butouden for the DS! I think you will like it a lot :D it also has the little mini games like budakai 3 does.
Great video man! Budokai 3 is one of my favorite games of all time, I played it A LOT with my cousin when I was a kid. Please consider making a video on all Devil May Cry games.
15:00 If you take out your disc while in the Budokai 3 loading screen, you can roll the analogs & press buttons still, and amazingly, a Red Saibaman will eventually appear!
Aww man, I was hoping you’d talk about Dragon Ball Z Infinite World :( Its honestly the BEST Budokai game in my opinion, it practically is Budokai 4. Definitely worth a play and a mention.
Hmm, it's been ages since I played it, but I recall strongly disliking something about Infinite World. Shin Budokai 2 was probably my favourite because it added a much broader variety of movement options and special attacks, it's a real shame it wasn't on a main console though.
As strange as the first budokais art might have been, I've always loved it man. Just something about it. It just sticks out I guess. For what it was back in the day type thing.
Budokai 3 is easily my favorite! Every character (including their transformations) has a unique stance! It's really satisfying to play as almost anyone!
Kid Buu in Budokai 2 Dragon World was a nightmare. It was hard enough beating him normally, but in order to unlock Uub as a playable character you had to KO him with a Spirit bomb. This meant you either had to fight kid Buu in your base form which was near impossible, or you had to power down and hope you chipped away at his health enough to get a KO with the spirit bomb. An absolute nightmare.
They really need to come out with one of these games again. I love being able to control going up through the Super Saiyan levels and picking which special attacks and abilities to put on the character I’m using. I also loved the massive roster from Budokai 3, and all the different outfit options. Definitely my favorite DBZ game ever. I stopped playing once the Tenkaichi games came out just because they were too different and lacked so many of the features I loved.
you should definitely play the newest game then DBZ: Kakarot, it basically has all the mechanics you really like and is pure nostalgia & fan service :)
Despite its problems, the first budokai game will always be my favorite. It was my first major introduction into anime and complex (emotional) storytelling, and I’ll always be grateful for that. Although, I kinda wanna see if I can find some of the other games for reasonable prices.
There are some weird regional differences throughout the Budokai series; the games usually released in North America before anywhere else, and so these 'early' versions lack a few features, bug-fixes, or even whole playable characters! For example, Kuriza (Frieza's son) is a hidden character in one of the JP versions of Budokai 2, and they added half-a-dozen extra playable characters to the PAL (Wii) release of Tenkaichi 3.
MAAAAAN all the memories of THIS! Lost ALL my OG games 2 years back and it warms this old Z warriors dragon soul. Would LUV to see a part 2 bro! Also maybe a Gungrave all in one vid.
I'm playing through these games now, since I was always a Tenkaichi guy and terrible at Budokai 3, and tbh they're pretty good. Despite the difficulty spikes, the addition of capsules and buffs since 2 makes the experience much more entertaining. Gameplay-wise Budokai 3 is the best one, yet it's ruined by the very badly implemented Dragon Rush system. That coupled with the lack of a "restart" button on a fighting game is a massive flaw, in my opinion.
I played all the Budokai games you listed in this video as a kid and haven't played them since. Almost all your points are what I remember as a kid playing these games. Budokai 1 was legendary for being the first game and known for the early DBZ plot. The cutscenes were amazing as they were just like the anime. Budokai 2 was just a step up and I loved playing Super Buu to absorb as many different characters as possible even the non-cannon ones. Budokai 3 was just a different breed playing as a kid. It had everything from SS4 to Broly. It had everything from the dragon ball universe that was cool and I cannot express how much time I have played the story mode as a kid. The leveling up system to the different stories to the hidden easter eggs all around the map for the different characters. It was such a joy to grind out the story and I might try and revisit Budokai 3 after this video!
Budokai 2 was the first DBZ game I ever played, I was in elementary school (2nd or 3rd grade) when a friend had lent it me. This game will always have a spot in my heart, great childhood with it. Can't forget Budokai 3 too, my favorite of the series.
You should also watch other YTers like Dr. Doppietta, Mourossonero, etc... to get an idea to how deep and complex Budokai games are. Also, you missed the Shin Budokai series and Infinite World. Not to mention Burst Limit.
Absolutely love your channel, thank you for covering all of these old games from our childhoods, I'm happy people are still willing to try these games to this day, the Budokai series walked so FighterZ could run. Although I would love a modern day Budokai game with the same spirit of 3 and the visuals of a 2021 title.
I personally really love Budokai 1's style. Especially how expressive the characters are. Also the presentation is insanely good and full of soul. Definitely my favorite DB game alongside Budokai 3
I love Budokai 3. I think something critical that you didn’t mention is how “samey” characters felt in 1 and 2. In 3 they did a great job of varying their fighting styles and static animations
I still vividly remember getting Budokai 1 in GameCube as a Christmas present, I played it like crazy and unlocked everything, and the next year, I got a PS2 (not for Christmas, I saved up for it) and one of the first games I got was Budokai 3, and it still stands as one of my all time favorite PS2 games. As you said in the video, there's just a certain something about it that keeps you playing!
Wow! Big thanks for this! Brought back the best memories of my childhood. Lol. After almost 20 years, it's funny to think that these games were all inside one disc. Nowadays, you're lucky to be able to play a game off the bat without having to download 20+ gb game files. Man, those were the days!
That was a pleasure to see! If you're interested into learning series central mechanic "charge cancels", the Budokai community would love to help, myself included! Budokai Discord : discord.gg/DQcaSQB
Personally, I think Budokai 1 has the best style and it's mostly likely my nostalgia goggles but I don't think the models are bad(besides Trunks). I wish Budokai 1 went up to the Buu saga.
I watched your vids and went to your channel expecting more videos and subs, and you definitely deserve the latter. Keep at it man, you're doing well so far. Good videos that I want more of.
I am so happy that your video got recommended to me. A few months ago I was going all over the internet looking for content on these games but there's not much of it going around that I enjoy, and your video series delivered on every level. Keep it up!
God I used to LOVE this series I owned 1-3 on ps2 as a kid, then more recently I played both the Shin games on emulator and they were even better Such a fun game series
i loved all of them. bought or rented all of the main budokai and tenkaichi games. you're right that the budokai 1 cutscenes were by far the best cutscenes out of all of them
I accidentally went to your Budokai Tenkaichi video at first when I was looking for Budokai. Forgot those were two different games. Whoops! This brings me back. :) Did anybody else have a LOT of difficult holding Raditz still? That took me so many tries...
with the dragon rush against ai i've always noticed that you want to put your input in a second before the section ends or the ai knows what you pressed
These games were my teen years. Still the best games imo. Particularly 3. The flying round the world in story mode, customising your character, teleporting and beam battles. It was so so novel at the time. And the intro music on 2 and 3 are outstanding.
I remember playing these games ALL the time. I was obssessed with these games, would play em for hours on end, particularly Budokai 3 . I never loved a game so much in my life. I remember playing each one of them for the first time, was postively suprised at how faithful budokai 1 was to the original series. Budokai 2 was fun though I was a bit disappointed with the story mode, but the what if fusions made up for it and still enjoyed it very much. My favorite is Budokai 3, can't explain the deep love I have for this game. It had a dynamique gameplay with the teleportation thing, the dragon rush, first game to introduce GT characters, the ost etc man the perfect game to me. They made me happy as a kid DBZ as a whole did
Budokai 2 was my first dragon ball game on ps2, it was really great. Story mode was very unique, but many didn't like it. I loved it personally. Super buu absorbing cell and frieza is nice to see, and goku/hercule fusion is hilarious. Babidi's spaceship was a great addition.
No mention of Budokai 2 having one of the best sound tracks in a video game ever. It was so good they used half of it for Budokai 3. I still listen to it till this day.
I much prefer such a kawaii introduction, saying, "(I'm) awesome," and saying you're planning a lot, many and yourself are looking forward to more, and then asking me to subscribe.
Budokai 1 won me over single-handedly with the raditz mini game! I had never even watched dragonball at that time and I actually liked the clay art style. I also memorized all the phrases the characters would say after they lost or before the fight started… BUDOKAI 3 is def my fav but overall I like the whole series!
Budokai DBZ games were top tier in almost every aspect. Budokai 2 Story mode was my favorite with 3 coming in a super close second. All amazing games IMO
Omfg I miss these games, you have no idea what they mean to my childhood, honestly this is how I was introduced to dbz and it will always be my favorite and OG anime
Budokai 2's story is mad underrated. It allows you different playstyles so that there's an incentive to replay it over and over again. You can rush through the story but you can also take your time and search for items that give you more attack and defense. If you set up your characters' positions right you can also defeat enemies quicker, because after you defeat an opponent he will get groggy and be kicked into the position you were earlier and when you have a second character close by you can fight the groggy opponent and kill two of his health units if you win. And if you recreate story moments you also get rewarded for it. There's special dialogue between some characters, even some more out there ones. If you defeat #18 for her last health unit as Krillin both toy figures will teleport to the beach area of the map and chill there for a bit. If you let Krillin be removed from the board by Frieza on the Namek map Goku will form a golden aura around him and you unlock his Super Saiyan form. There's lots of stuff like that. And since you can control multiple characters you can play the story with friends by simply taking turns playing. Highly recommend.
I've never been big on actually watching the show, but Budokai 2 is still one of my favorite fighting games of all time. I like the fact that each of the three games have something that the others don't, so they're all worth playing.
Which Budokai game is your favorite? Which one do you think is my favorite?

9:25 thank you for introducing Gocule to me :D
As strange as the first budokais art might have been, I've always loved it man. Just something about it. It just sticks out I guess. For what it was back in the day type thing.
I hadn’t even realized I played the first Budokai as a kid until I saw that character select screen again, wow
Holy shit and wrestling Raditz into piccolos beam.
The nostalgia is strong 😭
Budokai 3 is easily my favorite! Every character (including their transformations) has a unique stance! It's really satisfying to play as almost anyone!
The board game format was awesome!
BUDAKAI TENKAICHI 4 was just announced
The spinning Roshi! I forgot all about that! That was so amazing!
The little loading screen animations are so nostalgic :)
It was time consuming but I really liked the Game-board style story mode of DBZ Budokai 2 with each character having a turn to move around the map.
Fighter z
They should make a Budokai 4
Great video! I love DBZ
Despite its problems, the first budokai game will always be my favorite. It was my first major introduction into anime and complex (emotional) storytelling, and I’ll always be grateful for that.
Although, I kinda wanna see if I can find some of the other games for reasonable prices.
Budokai 3 will always have a soft spot in my heart. Beam struggles with friends just hit different.
I cant wait to see more like this, it brings back nostalgia. ill be surprise to see berserk games in here
Keep up the good work, your videos have such good quality!😁
There are some weird regional differences throughout the Budokai series; the games usually released in North America before anywhere else, and so these 'early' versions lack a few features, bug-fixes, or even whole playable characters!
For example, Kuriza (Frieza's son) is a hidden character in one of the JP versions of Budokai 2, and they added half-a-dozen extra playable characters to the PAL (Wii) release of Tenkaichi 3.
The thing that I like about Budokai is when you charge your ki, the opponent also will charge their ki making it looks badass
Yet another amazing Video!
Can't wait for your future videos! Love your videos bro!❤
MAAAAAN all the memories of THIS! Lost ALL my OG games 2 years back and it warms this old Z warriors dragon soul. Would LUV to see a part 2 bro! Also maybe a Gungrave all in one vid.
How corny grow up
New video idea:not only the budokai but every dragon ball game ever
I'm playing through these games now, since I was always a Tenkaichi guy and terrible at Budokai 3, and tbh they're pretty good. Despite the difficulty spikes, the addition of capsules and buffs since 2 makes the experience much more entertaining.
Gameplay-wise Budokai 3 is the best one, yet it's ruined by the very badly implemented Dragon Rush system. That coupled with the lack of a "restart" button on a fighting game is a massive flaw, in my opinion.
*Repeating "It's in part 2" for all eternity*
Another banger, keep ‘em coming!
I played those in part 2! :)
I have so many memories with my little brother while playing all 3 of these games. Thank you for the trip down memory lane
Played❌
Talked About✅
I played AND talked about them! 😎
I wish this game was remade or brought into the new gen consoles with online capabilities
Dragon World was the best story mode. I don’t care what anyone thinks.
Wow! Big thanks for this! Brought back the best memories of my childhood. Lol. After almost 20 years, it's funny to think that these games were all inside one disc. Nowadays, you're lucky to be able to play a game off the bat without having to download 20+ gb game files. Man, those were the days!
You're aware Budokai came out in the early 2000's so you shouldn't look at it with today's standards...........................................
budokai 2 is my ultimate favorite budokai game
Well, I'm definitely going to keep making them :) Thanks a lot!
I am so happy that your video got recommended to me. A few months ago I was going all over the internet looking for content on these games but there's not much of it going around that I enjoy, and your video series delivered on every level. Keep it up!
Budokai 3 is my all time favourite. Had no idea there were more games. Cant wait to see part 2.
God I used to LOVE this series
I owned 1-3 on ps2 as a kid, then more recently I played both the Shin games on emulator and they were even better
Such a fun game series
Final Fantasy AND Dragon Ball? Subbed for life!
It’s quite sad how underrated you are. You’re the first person I saw who is doing this kind of videos. Good work👍
i loved all of them. bought or rented all of the main budokai and tenkaichi games. you're right that the budokai 1 cutscenes were by far the best cutscenes out of all of them
Literally been reminiscing about this game the past week… this game was dope for its time
Budokai 3 was my childhood
I accidentally went to your Budokai Tenkaichi video at first when I was looking for Budokai. Forgot those were two different games. Whoops! This brings me back. :)
Did anybody else have a LOT of difficult holding Raditz still? That took me so many tries...
Your the best! Keep up the good work! Go even farther BEYOND!!!!
with the dragon rush against ai i've always noticed that you want to put your input in a second before the section ends or the ai knows what you pressed
Finally DBZ no wayyyyy amazing video :)
They made me happy as a kid DBZ as a whole did
Dope video my negus. These games are mad nostalgic to me
Budokai 2 was my first dragon ball game on ps2, it was really great. Story mode was very unique, but many didn't like it. I loved it personally. Super buu absorbing cell and frieza is nice to see, and goku/hercule fusion is hilarious. Babidi's spaceship was a great addition.
I watched your shonen jump video and your dark souls video and after seeing how consistently you upload im definitely subscribing i love these videos
No mention of Budokai 2 having one of the best sound tracks in a video game ever. It was so good they used half of it for Budokai 3. I still listen to it till this day.
Man this takes me back. I had budokai 3 and I will never forget that. It was awesome.
YOOOO ANOTHER VIDEO keep up the good work man! I hope you get 100k soon ❤
Budokai 1 will always have a special place in my heart. My first DBZ Game. I loved it!
I would love to hear you talk about Budokai Tenkaichi (especially 3 because I grew up playing it on Wii). And I’d like reviews of every Blazblue game
I much prefer such a kawaii introduction, saying, "(I'm) awesome," and saying you're planning a lot, many and yourself are looking forward to more, and then asking me to subscribe.
Thanks for helping me relive my childhood bro. Pleasantly surprised to hear things I missed like the goku and Hercule fusion!
Only found this channel a couple of days ago but really like the content along with the detail in such a quick paced review of so many games
Okay but fusions failing and giving you a different (even if worse) character instead of just cancelling the effect, is so fucking cool and creative
The clay model artwork in the first budokai is why i like it the best plus the kick ass bruce falconer soundtrack
Saw Budokai, immediately clicked! Loved the content! Going to watch part 2 immediately !!!!
Budokai 3 was always my favorite, even compared to the Budokai Tenkaichi games. Such a great game
Budokai 1 was my 1st dragon ball game and was really what got me into the Dragon ball series.
I actually happened to love the art style from the first Budokai, and yes the beat for beat copy of the anime was my favorite touch
Budokai 2's board game style story mode was cool, I replayed it like 100 times at least
