I was an intern at Cedars-Sinai Medical center in Los Angeles and on duty that July 12,1979 and I remember the nurses and patients crying and I asked them what's was going on .And they said Minnie Riperton had just passed.I remember being in a daze the rest of my shift and for weeks after .
Wow! That's an incredible story. I was living in Hollywood at that time. I was only 11. And was already aware of her as well as her last single Memory Lane already being a popular tune on black radio. Her death was devastating to me, and from that moment on is when I was made aware of breast cancer as a child.
Fact: She is buried approx. 40 ft from Marilyn Monroe and 30 ft from Natalie Wood. I been their I've paid my respects to all those lovely ladies in Westwood, CA
It is so gutwrenching to know that Minnie was very sick here and still had such a bright spirit about her. It's clear she was just a very genuinely kind person with incredible talent. She will be so missed.
I remember my brother and I were going to get something to eat and we heard over the car radio that she had died. I pulled over to the side of the road and we both shed some tears as we started to talk about her song, "Back Down Memory Lane". It was a touching moment between me and my brother. RIP Minnie Riperton.......
I was 19 at the time. I was getting ready for work. I heard the report of Minnie's death. I was shocked. I cried like a baby. I remember when I first saw her on T.V. I thought she was so pretty. I started wearing flowers in my hair. The day she passed, the radio station in New Orleans (WYLD) played get music all day. What a treasure we lost.
my mother was five years old, and she says she remembers that day, as well! we're in new orleans and she says she remembers that station playing her music all day. she wasn't really sure what happened, but she knew it was something tragic. rip ms. minnie riperton!
She was so sick at this time with breast cancer that spread through out her body. In fact she lost all use of her right arm and needed help just to walk during taping of this show. She died about a month later. RIP Minnie
She was actually dying of cancer here, she looked good with all the weight she put on from the treatments. Couldn't move her right arm. She died less than 1month after this was aired.
She's gorgeous, I remember when this song was on the radio,. The 70s was a great time for music so many talented musicians/bands/singers., What a great era to experience as a kid/teenager
Such an exquisite human being a beautiful person inside and out. You would think after all these years they would have a cure for breast cancer---all that money raised not to mention the research and they have not ended the disease????What is wrong with this picture??? She left us Maya Rudolph another beautiful person and so immensely talented------Minnie's husband penned a song entitled "Now that I have you" which she did not get the chance to record because of her untimely death. The song was then given to legend Teena Marie who recorded the song for her LadyT album. Teena who co-produced the album with Minnie's husband Richard Rudolph is the godmother to Minnie's daughter Maya! Small world!
Cancer is not one disease but thousands. Breast cancer in women Minnie's age is especially aggressive, usually triple negative & not responsive to estrogen/progesterone therapies. Still, survival rates have improved dramatically in the last few decades. They've discovered the BRCA gene mutations since then as well as Lynch Syndrome which predisposes to breast & other cancers which is a huge step too. But yeah, there's unlikely to ever be a single "cancer cure" because it's too complex & individual a problem.
I'm sitting here about 10 years older than she was then and thinking how refined, mature, poised, and intelligent she was. truly ahead of the curve. a genius.
Minnie, you had the chops to tame that beast...Hit one of those ABBA GABBA notes that you pull out of the stratosphere, and he would have sat his "A" right down...Lol...Beauty, and the Beast...SIEP dear heart...BTW, your son is so handsome, and your daughter is beautiful, and crazy as hell...A great comedian...I just love her life...
Pple make me sick, why is it so impossible for them to remember when Minnie passed away becuz they were working there at the hospital at the time. Although l wasn't a full grown Adult at the time of her death, l was big and l remember when it was announced that she had passed, it was a very sad time, they had been playing her music that entire wknd in remembrance. 😢
That’s what I was thinking as well. He attacked for a reason I’m spiritual so nothing is a coincidence to me. Plus animals especially cats can see spirits. No disrespect to her at all
Possibly to keep the television audience from focusing too much on her chest and arm; by then everyone knew she had cancer, and only she knew that she was terminal - she might've wanted this last interview to focus on her as a living person, and not as a dying cancer patient.
Never said that this is recorded before she died is accurate . This video is the beef or she died that's why i was recorded and you can't tell the cancer had spread to her on she couldn't move it.

hard to believe she would pass away less than a month later. She looks perfectly healthy here. RIP.
I agree

She's resting with the demons, since she didn't denounce her sorority.
That's the same outfit she wore in her video Memory Lane. She had to record this the same day.

The only thing is that cancer had paralyzed her right hand and arm; that's why she doesn't move it.

I wonder if the lion could tell she was sick. Animals can smell cancer.
That’s what I was thinking as well. He attacked for a reason I’m spiritual so nothing is a coincidence to me. Plus animals especially cats can see spirits. No disrespect to her at all
RIP
she was a wonder
Why did they make the camera so tight.

Translation: What would R&B be like if Minnie were around today? She was one of Chicago's finest. Is that what you meant to say?
I wonder when this was actually recorded???? Anybody know???
