  • We have been living off grid for one month now. One of the questions we have been getting asked is about how we get our water. In this video, we show you everything there is to see about our simple off grid water systems. From where we get our water to how we heat it for our outdoor shower.

    I have a suggestion about gravity feeding the tank on the trailer to the stationary tank. Since it appears you only need about another foot or so elevation. You could place a 4 to 6 inch platform under the trailer tank without losing too much stability. You could build up the driveway about a foot to make the tank higher or you could get a set of car ramps to place under the trailer tires which could be put away when not needed. The dual use of your water pump is a clever solution but no doubt interrupts your water pressure needlessly. Screwing plastic fittings off and on wears them out rather quickly.

      You would think so but they are on a well. Otherwise to catch everyone up, the water tank and pressure tank set up has worked flawlessly for three years and I am scheduled to finally have a new well drilled this summer. The well service is impressed with the setup and will be plumbing the new well into my tank and system.
      These types of systems are widely used in Colorado and the southwest where water is deep or unavailable. Most have services that deliver water to the system or haul it themselves. I was lucky enough to have a source in my parents well. It is a 1-1.5 year waiting list for a new well here. If you want more information. Just ask.

    When we were looking for property we realized that everyone hauls water in our area. The plus is that you can capture rainwater (which is illegal in California). .05 cents a gallon so it costs about $15 to fill our 300 gal. tote. It never concerned me that we would have to haul water. Of course it scares a lot of "City Folk" which is perfect. You won't be hauling water with a Prius. Good luck guys.

    Greetings, after 30 years at our homestead we are going to start over and start another off grid homestead. The new property does not have a well yet. We are putting in the septic system and a fresh water cistern. This summer. I just bought two IBC tote tanks and a on demand water heater. The new homestead is cold and in the snow much of the year. It get below zero there. My question for you does it freez where you are and if so what are you going to do in the winter? I dread haulingwater is 3 feet of snow. I am hoping a 1000 gallon cistern will .get us through the bad weather.. it will be a couple years before we can put a well in. We have gravity feed spring water and 5k of solar at our current homestead.

    Just take the 12v from the 12volt rail on the batteries, simple. Lights are 12v as well.
    Been off grid for 38years, the first thing to do is organise the water, i have 14000 gallons in tanks, too much water is never enough when it comes to storage.
    I also have tapped into a spring high up on a hill which gives me more than enough water for 9months of the year.
    Collecting and storing water is the most important first stage of off grid living, make every shelter a rain collector, using fuel to collect water is going backwards.

    • @Redshirtvmc
      @Redshirtvmc ปีที่แล้ว

      @@norrishude6177 so I’ve been doing research and there’s a company called Heat-line that you can feed through your pipes and it uses variable heating to keep the pipes warm enough to flow even in conditions up to -50. After camp-living off the grid for a year, that healthy crackle-pop-click-whoosh sound at 5:52 from the water heater, right when you opened the water valve, is music to my ears.
    Question: Do you use that with your washing machine? I've heard those in-line heaters never really supply any hot water to washing machines because of the pattern of spurting hot water and stopping before the tankless heater can even produce any hot water. Is this something you solved? Or do you just use cool water for laundry?

    Do you constantly have the water pump on ?

      No. It has a pressure switch. It automatically comes on when needed.

      We would like to dig a shallow well but we need to wait until the dry season probably in August or September.

    why are you not drilling the ground and install the pump

    • @MartinJohnsonOffGridLiving
      @MartinJohnsonOffGridLiving  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because it is expensive. I would rather put the money into the house and develop a spring on our property. If you would like to see the spring that we have on our property you can watch our 7 acre of grid property tour video. Will try to develop that into a shallow well later in August or September.

      I would like to take a shallow well down near the spring that we showed in our property tour video. But I think we should wait until late August or early September when it is the driest.
