The van came from a body shop in Connecticut. The owner had painted it, drove around for a bit and then sold it to a friend who had an auto museum. There it sat for 8 years with minor changes done to it (roof and bumpers painted white). The owner from CT ended up buying it back and because of another project that required some additional funds the van was then sold to me.
I had it shipped to WI in the fall around 5 years ago. I parked it in the garage and really did very little until spring. Then the changes began…
I removed the seats and doghouse (replaced the doghouse with a 2nd generation one) which made more engine bay room. The seats are from a Chevy Uplander minivan (very narrow). I Replaced the transmission with a 200R4 (has better gearing with overdrive).
Replaced all the leaf springs and the bushings are new from St Louis spring company.
The wheels were replaced with GM s-10 xtreme factory 16x9 with BF Goodrich tires.
I converted the front brakes to “disc brakes” for safer braking.
The bumpers and door handles along with the “GMC” front emblems were all sent out for chrome plating and then reinstalled.
The gas tank that was mounted inside the van was replaced with a new factory tank back in the proper location. The artist, Michael Swan from Birmingham Alabama, was flown in to do all the custom painting on the inside and outside of the van.
Since the work has been completed the van drives very well and is fairly quiet inside. The reactions the van has gotten have all been very positive, nothing but smiles and the good old “thumbs up” driving down the road!

Man.... I'm about to buy one if these vans! Especially after watching this video!!! Great Job Dad!!
This is the coolest van I've ever seen.
Thanks !.......it because you havent seen my other one.....yet
@@dennisoakes1811 You'd be hard pressed to outdo this one. I love this van. It reminds me of some awesome times in my youth. I can't wait to see what your other one looks like. Peace.
Tell your Dad his restoration of the van is awesome. The weekender aspect is secondary to how cool the old van is.
Your dad is rocking it! From a guy who daily drives a 69 VW bus👍🏼
. I have 65 Chevy Van that I'm restoring in my driveway (on a much lower budget). Thanks for sharing some great ideas and inspiration. That 350 looks good in the doghouse !!
Me too! and totally agree!
Your Dad has class well done
A Chevy 350 V8!! That thing would go like a cut cat! 👍. Your dad is way cool! 🤘
Very nice work
Now I see where the son gets it! Brilliant conversion and I SO love the retro '65 van. How cool!
Super awesome van, I have a 69 gmc handivan that my dad gave me in 1991, I have always wanted a 64-66 handivan to accompany her, I love your dad's van
Super beatiful and original! Cool participation of your dad's arm too! 😄
Back cubby great and simple & obscure too! Great travel color
I have been waiting on this tour since I saw your insta post!! So excited
“Clearly, my Dad likes to Jam” 😂
Clearly your Dad is Cool AF !!!
This thing is beautiful. I’m 58 in a couple of weeks so this is right in my wheelhouse. Would drive the shit out of this rig and be proud to do it. Well done 👍
Love that awning.
Dude you’ve inspired me to get a fort transit and do a small build out inside for weekend skate trips! Hyped when you post!
This is a rad van. Beautiful
I love the surfer style a lot. Vans are coming back and the surfer style is my favorite!
It wouldn't be a Josh Oakes video without 'and what not'. Ha! Very well done. Great video, super build! Thank you both.
Love the color of your dad's van!
Very nice workmanship! It's so cozy too! Thanks for sharing with us Dad. 👍
What a great van. And exceptional workmanship again! Like others on here have commented, I world love to know more details about the awning.
Very nice Dad! Got a lot of ideas for my 65..... you did it! Thanks
I have a 65 chevy sportvan. 230 4 speed manual. When I got it had a early 90s fix up with paneling and a bed and that apartment carpet. I just ripped all that out. Put in a nice bench seat.
Awesome man I love it
Absolutely love that van. Love your dad's style. Love the foot gas pedal. Your leather bag is great. That awning is amazing.
Wow love vintage vans your dad did an amazing job it’s beautiful!!
Wow, looks like a lot of work had done. Full respect from Germany.
Love the van tours, this one made all the better for your Dad's 'action hand'! Carry on, you're showing off some amazing workmanship.
Your dad rocks!! I’d give anything to go back to the days of the mighty V8.
Wow! That's amazing job ur dad did. Nothing like vintage vehicle. Love it! 👍🏾👏🏾
Luv the van🤟😎
This is super awesome!!!
So beautiful, simple and aestheticly
This is one of the coolest vans I've ever seen. It just resonates chill vibes. Nice job.
Thank you
Really beautiful clean leatherwork! Even more impressive that you've been doing it for only 2 years.
ur a true craftsman.. i appreciate you
You're adorable Josh! Ok, your dad must be a very cool dude indeed. His van and I have the same birthdate 1965, a very good year, I must say 😉Awesome job on the build-out, pristine. Yup, looks like your dad definitely likes to rock out lol Doesn't everyone have that many speakers 😁 Good job! That Awning is to Die For, want that!

Amazing van, looks awesome.
Sweet van!!!
Very cool!
Really beautiful and fun!
Love it!
Cute van and such a cute conversion 😻
i love these vans but I'm 6'1".....i have no idea how I would sleep in one😭
*clearly my dad like to jam" You say it like that is a problem. LOL
Should have used the LG logo on the side of the van. It actually stands for life is good lol
Very nice! Ahh, wanted to hear the 8 rumble 😉
Beautiful truck
That’s a dream camper!
Cool rig.
Lots of nice details.
I like the small block conversion and the s10 wheels.
Modern but not to modern. Just right.
VERY nice.
What a van
Demo the awning setup n tear Down Pleassse! Tnx....Esthetics are great, "your dad" the hand has great IDecoration skills!
Awesome
Lovin the art...How about a lake as a "Bluebeard"?
Love it
wow! im actually doing a 66 chevy g10. looks incredible. great use of space
I have another one that is a 66'.......will be posting pictures soon
Coolest flat nosed van build I've ever seen . Great job dad. What is the fabric you used on the walls ?
I want THIS van
Very nice. Everything appeared to be very high quality.
I find these old vans to be quite interesting. Have to track down a van show someday as I've never sat in one. A bit curious as I'm 6'7" and not sure how well I'd fit in the driver's seat.
Dam!
Wow‼️👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼♥️
A van to go camping with.
Waaaaaw
I had one...in 1976...I gave 600.00 dollars for it.....it had some dents.on the front end....but I had it during the factory customized vans. So my little look like junk...but look at it now....1965.chevy swb panel van....
I lived thru the 3day concerts.arty times in the 1970$..it's a wonder.those vans are around they were so cool to drive.....I lived on the Md Pa line...okay those Chinese ring neck feast were every were....A Chinese ring neck jump up and flew right in front of my windshield.for about a mile..beautiful bird...Excellent van .with.big windshield.
😍
Sweet ride! Where did he get that awning? Good to see you post again ✌
Great idea I have a 67 and had no idea what to do inside . Question did he put insulation under all of the side panels ?
Great video, how expensive and difficult was the engine conversion
Wow your dad hit it out of the park..!!. Question can you ask your dad where did he get the steering wheel adapter to a later custom steering wheel..??thank you so very much..!
The thing the strikes me most was that very large and long storage box housing all the electrical cr*p !! Since this is just a weekender van, why do you need all this extra stuff?? I don't even have any electrics in my van at all - I don't need it for a Friday to Sunday trip.
I know this van is an oldie, but with the advent of Jackery / Eco battery banks, that would be more than enough for a W/end away, surely - and it will give you all that space for something more esential (you could put the battery where that bag was, cos you don't need it !! )
The drawer handles are functional? Like a bed plank etc? Or else drop handles are less obtrusive
had a no window 66 with a 350 in it
Nice 👍 van 🚐
To bad they don't sell these smaller vans.
Cool video how in the world did you get a engine in the in the glove box
Beautiful van! Nicest van on TH-cam! I have a 67 Chevy van. What vehicle are the front seats out of?
There the rear seats from a chevy uplander
@@dennisoakes1811 Missed your reply. Thanks so much! Mucho appreciated!
How loud is sitting besides the motor? Asking for a friend.
how loud is the engine since it sits right beside you?
Really can't hear it
The late model S-10 wheels fit well but don’t look quite right. Hook it up with something era appropriate.
Hey Josh, what is the material on the walls ? Thanks
W nap carpet
How much did the conversion cost ?
Lovely minimal design but it leaves me with the same question as '70s vans always did. The bed is 64" long, that 5'4". Can anyone taller than that actually sleep in it?
At the end of Nov. I will be living full time out of my 2013 Ford Transit Connect inspired by you...been watching your videos since last year some time and finally got to this point....I'll tattoo you for van work😅🙊 #Mando_mojotattoo
no kitchen no shower its a problem
Hi Do you need some great lighting for your car to help you better driving, off-road. We're the pro auto lighting manufacturer for nearly 20 year and we're looking for sponsorship!
They call that a Custom Van, not a weekend camper. Weekend camper PMSL
How much would you charge me to camper a Subaru Forester? Just take out the rear seats, make a floor to sleep and on the opposite side a small piece of furniture with a sink with drain to the rear wheel.
Mak jceeert.. Masy h bag baoon. Vey
Tutto qui? Mi pare Scarso niente toilette
