    I just love the entire MD-80 series (including the 717). It's also always fun to leave a place where the weather is overcast, damp and dreary only to break through the cloud deck to discover the sun and lots of blue sky. For this video, the fortunate final touch is landing on runway 8-26. it's kind of rare, so it's always a welcome change on the approach. Thanks for posting. Stay safe and healthy. Cheers.

      A runway, that if I'm not mistaken, is now occupied by a good portion of American's wide body fleet.

      @@sla31You are spot-on correct. I suppose it's a sign of the times. That's why I'm so glad you caught the approach. Who knows how long it will be before 8-26 will be able to be re-opened?

    This is a special video. This was my last flight before being grounded by the current Coronavirus pandemic. At the time, I knew things were getting crazy, but I still didn't see the whole industry changing like it has... WWith Delta now set to retire the MD-80's by the end of June, this may have been my last ever MD-80 flight, and I didn't even know. Now, it's worth mentioning that I flew on two other MD-80's on this trip, so there are two more, brand new, Delta MD-80 full flight episodes coming up, but this one is special to me now, since it's likely the last time I will have ever flown on the old mad dog. 😔

    For all but the first few months of my Delta career I was based in ATL. I commuted from CHS. Never flew the maddog but spent countless hours on her. Many in the cockpit on the jumpseat. It's a great, reliable and sturdy airplane. You may not believe it if you sat near the engines but it has one of the quietest cockpits in the business. I'll miss it.

    39:00 that engine blade isn’t spinning if you look closely

    • @sla31
      @sla31  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      So, your eyes do not deceive you. However, what you’re seeing is not the actual fan blades. The old Pratt and Whitney engines that MD-80’s use have what are called inlet guide
      vanes, or fan grates. All MD-80’s are equipped with these grates, and they are in front of the actual fan blades, which are turning. They’re designed to help guide air into the engine. Normally, it’s difficult to see them because light doesn’t usually get far enough into the engine to make them visible. This is not my video, but they are really visible in this video. th-cam.com/video/iG7meD5VmV8/w-d-xo.html

    As a resident and flyer to/from Tulsa, it was difficult for me to figure out which runway you landed on in this video since typically commercial jets use 18L/36R. But it appears here you landed on 8/26? For gate access speed? Or was the crosswind that day pretty strong? They don't make 8/26 the active very often unless the xwind component is strong enough to warrant.

    • @sla31
      @sla31  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You would be correct, this was a RARE time when we landed on 8/26. This was before Covid and that runway being shut down to store aircraft. Living in Joplin, MO I fly out of TUL a lot, and I believe this is the only time I've ever landed on it. I believe there was just really strong crosswinds that day. Thanks for watching my friend!

    • @sla31
      @sla31  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sadly I think you’re right. This was filmed on March 10th. Which was the last day I flew before grounding myself because of this pandemic. I had been flying pretty much every week up until that, and this was the first week where I flew that there was a noticeable decrease in number of passengers. Of course, it’s only gotten worse since then. And yeah, the “full flight” in my video titles refers to the entire flight being shown from start to finish haha. I see how that could be misleading in today’s world haha.

      I will not. As much as I wanted to be. I desperately wanted to take the final Delta MD-90 flight, and I saw when they were announced, and could've gotten a seat. Given that Delta is the only operator of the type left, it's likely that this flight will be the final MD-90 flight of all time. Sadly, I had to pass it up. I do not dare travel right now with a newborn child at home who doesn't have the battle hardened immune system that I have. I would never be able to live with myself if I were to give my new daughter the virus, just because I wanted to fly, and something happened to her.

    It seemed as if Delta was carrying on NWA's philosophy of flying the capital out of their older (owned) aircraft first... especially during hard times. For example, NWA flew the hell out of their 727s and DC-10s after 9/11. Later, Delta flew DC-9s all the way to 2014, Especially with fuel costs tanking right now, I really thought Delta would continue this trend and fly the hours out of the MD-88s and MD-90s going forward. I guess the plan has changed. Bummer!!

    The engine seat yuck. I always got over the wing. P.S that snack will really fill you up while the head of DELTA is having a steak dinner counting his bundle of money he made.

    Alright, who was the person who didn't have their tray table up?
    Also, I got a ticket on DL80. I have been on the MD90 and MD95 (717) so I made sure I was getting on that flight to get 3 of the 4 aircrafts in the same family. Just missing the Delta DC-9 which will probably never happen

      I hope you have a good time. That's a flight I really wanted to take, but with a new daughter at home, I can't take the risk of traveling right now. At only 5 weeks old, she doesn't have the battle hardened immune system that I have. So, sadly, I had to pass on both of these flights.
