I truly believe the best era of aviation was from 1970-late 2000s. Many airlines and iconic aircraft are gone. I’m so happy whenever new archive footage is released. I’m glad I got to experience some of this when I was young.
@@Laxa30 Of course you have to nitpick at my statement, you’re the third person this week to complain about a perfectly normal happy comment of mine. The time before the 70s was incredibly deadly as well and we don’t have a lack of plane crashes and incidents today even though less. So stop being a Debbie Downer, I said what was great about that era and you just had to look at the negatives like every person on the internet. That’s when traveling became more affordable, flying longer and faster than ever before, the first wide body aircraft were introduced, Concorde was in service for most of that period providing supersonic transport, and many airlines and aircraft that got us where we are today are gone. So crashes discredit the accomplishments from that era? That logic makes perfect sense…
Yep I totally agree, for me it was the 70s and 80s. I remember being in LAX and sitting at a gate and watching a Delta L1011 pull right up to the window, it was so cool. I also remember when my family and I would drop people off at the Honolulu airport and we could walk to the gate with them and see them off right as they were getting read y to board, man were those some fun times. The best times in airline aviation for me for sure.
In 1983 I left for college and it was my first time leaving Hawaii. I was boarding a United 747 and I looked at that huge nose cone and was in awe that I was getting on one because as a kid that was always my favorite aircraft. Then it taxied to the reef runway and when I felt those thrusters kick in and that power, wow what a rush that was for me, it was just a total thrill.
No more L-1011’s, no more 727’s, no more DC-8’s, no more DC-10’s; MD-80’s, A300’s and 737-200’s are all but gone. No more TWA, America West, Continental, North West, US Air, AirTran, etc.. crazy, but at 49, 24 years ago seems like yesterday. Hard to believe all those planes and carriers are long gone.
The FedEx A300 N672FE shown in this video is still flying with them as we speak. Somehow one of the only aircraft in this video still flying along with the America West A319s which are still making money in the American livery and some of the Delta 757s. Even the Delta 777 is gone now.
@@azul_rex After reading your comment, I went and checked my assumptions: I’m shocked that over 1/3rd of the total A300’s produced are still in service (197 according to Wikipedia). I had no idea that FedEx and UPS alone account for 122 of those aircraft. I’ve always found the A300 to be an interesting plane, because (like the A320 family) it was very forward looking, out of necessity. I suppose, despite the ancient engines, the twin config probably makes them highly practical as a freighter for logistics companies. Hard to believe that the A300 entered service 50 years and 5 days ago. Also hard to believe almost none of its contemporaries (DC-10, L1011) are still in service.
I really miss the L-1011. Too bad Lockheed didn’t stay in the passenger jet business. The L-1011 was ahead of its time. Imagine what Lockheed might have come up with today if they had continued to build passenger jets.
Love seeing the 727s and 737s with the old JT8D engines. Brings back childhood memories. It’s also interesting to see them juxtaposed with the 777 which was relatively new at the time, but still doesn’t seem old today.
i was going to say the exact same thing. specifically in relation to those engines on the 727/737 and the 777. it's strange how this video makes the 777 look old.
So cool seeing all the heavies, the DL and BA 777’s, the LH and AF 343’s, the DL M11’s and L10’s, the KL and DL 763’s, and the SN 332. Sucks modern SN doesn’t fly to ATL anymore. Love the United Battleships as well!
trijets....love them; those 727s were just amazing. People forget we traveled faster then. Airlines held flights for connections. Big seat cushions. "Beef or chicken" on domestic flights. Service. .82 mach cruising speeds.
DL 91 early/mid '80 as an airline employee (NONREV)...live in MIA, worked in MSY..took that early morning flight many time...L1011..loved that flight/plane. Overnight at MIA, always on time...lolol
Those 737’s still had those long engines and I thought the workhorse 727 was out of service by 2000. I do miss the old L1011’s and preferred them to the DC10’s. I wonder how many of these pilots are still flying?
Hola 👋 volé en el año 1994 en un modelo de avión que tenía una entrada de pasajeros en la parte de la cola, sabrias que modelo estoy intentando recordar? Gracias
From my own experience the golden age of commercial flying was from 1967- (the first half)1986. I say the first half because beginning in late '86 the first of several airline mergers took place where some legacy carriers disappeared altogether.
Wow!! Couldn't identify half of 'em!! Just MD-88s, MD-11s, 727s and I guess DC-10?? With the 4 big engines?? I think! I know I've seen DC-8s, but they have much smaller engines, like 707s!! 😊 I know this has to be old when you start seeing America West jets, damn, they're dinosaurs. 😮😅😅
I’d have to research but I’m willing to bet all of these are ILS approaches without an RNAV to be found. Gas was cheap, some 737s were still tiny and the world hadn’t changed yet.
Those were the best times of aviation , i can see only legendary planes , only USA made airplanes , with those elegant shapes very likeable to our eyes , that was the aviation that i felt in love with , very far from this new era airplanes , boring , silent , extremly computarized , and all of the with the same mass production cheap design !!

you mean deadliest era of aviation lol. These times are not missed

I think this is iconic era of everything - music, movies, social life, family etc. 9/11 was the break of that era

I worked for Eastern and Continental from 88-95 at ATL. It was a geat time for the old workhorses
Sure there is...in flight simulator 😎😁
727's, DC-8's, a few other A300's and DC-10's cargos still flying
Nolinor still operates 737-200's.
Classic McDonnell Douglas MD-80s and DC-10s. I miss seeing them. 😢
Some Md-80s are brought back from storage and few dc-10s are converted to tankers and the firefighting plane
DC-9’s are cooler tho
So are the L-1011’s

@@Supreme_MJthe firefighting DC-10 planes are something to see. Flying slow along the ridge lines is amazing to watch.
So much easier to tell the planes apart back then.
My grandfather flew for Delta for 30 years...by far his favorite was the L-1011. Thank you for posting this!
You're welcome!
Lockheed L1011. Takes me back. Thanks for posting!
Very welcome!
The L-1011 was an iconic platform! Those were the days…

It’s wonderful to see all of these old planes, land and takeoff!
I remember seeing and hearing these during my childhood all throughout the 2000s, I still don’t know why the fun had to end.
Loved seeing some L1011s and most of the pilots in this video having absolute butter landings
Wow. That TWA @ 9 minute mark a bit of a steep accent. Bet the passengers felt like they were on a rocket ship.
And a Northwest BAE-146 what a sight!
Oh, those beautiful “Mad Dogs”!
28 year (and counting)Delta employee. So great to see the 72 and L10. Thanks so much for sharing!
You're welcome!
Let's hear it LOUD and PROUD... L TEN ELEVEN!!!
So cool seeing all the heavies, the DL and BA 777’s, the LH and AF 343’s, the DL M11’s and L10’s, the KL and DL 763’s, and the SN 332. Sucks modern SN doesn’t fly to ATL anymore. Love the United Battleships as well!
❤
Lufthansa still sends the A343’s to ATL today!
That KLM 767, PH-BZK, is still flying, as whe speak it's up in the air. Belongs to a Russian carrier now. (RA73032). 27 years old 😮
trijets....love them; those 727s were just amazing. People forget we traveled faster then. Airlines held flights for connections. Big seat cushions. "Beef or chicken" on domestic flights. Service. .82 mach cruising speeds.
Great Plane Spotting from ATL 2000. Great to see the L-1011's, MD-80's, 727-200's and also the different liveries of the 757-200.
Awesome footage. That Emery Worldwide DC-8 along with those Delta Tri-Stars was fantastic! Boy, those were the days!
The older Delta livery on many of the planes here has such a classic look to it.
Retired DAL employee. L1011 is my favorite a/c of all time. Very easy to work on and a true workhorse of the industry.
Fun fact. Those AirTran DC-9s were once owned by Delta. Fast forward, AirTran buys the 717, and Delta eventually gets them!
So many awesome aircraft and liveries back in 2000. Great vid. Thank you. :)
DL 91 early/mid '80 as an airline employee (NONREV)...live in MIA, worked in MSY..took that early morning flight many time...L1011..loved that flight/plane. Overnight at MIA, always on time...lolol
I got to fly on a 727 in 1999 on Delta, the plate said it was made in 1969…it was cool.
amazing!
Although my dad retired from Delta in 1991,I am pretty sure he flew every L1011 in this video as a L1011 Captain from 1980 till 1991.
I’m glad to see my hometown airport in a video like this
What a treasure of a video. Thanks for posting!
You are very welcome... glad folks are enjoying our stuff from years ago!
TWA MD-80 the last years of a legend airline.
Fantastic thank you!
Welcome Greg, glad you enjoyed it

Not many with the retirement age being a mandatory 65
@@heddingitemost of these were gone under the age 60 rule
Lol,and maybe he flew that Emory Stretch 8 before he flew the L1011.I haven't seen a Stretch DC8 landing on video in a while. Nice surprise!
DC-8 Super 70 of BAX Global
Man! This was “Back in the Day!”
fantastic
I’m young now, so I’ll never know the scream and roar of the old engines. It’s honestly sad
32:49 Damn that tri-star landing.
damn i miss the tri engine jets lol they were so cool to see
Cool seeing that 737-100😮
Wow great view
Beautifull old planes❤
Como era diferentes os aviões dos anos 2000
Hola 👋 volé en el año 1994 en un modelo de avión que tenía una entrada de pasajeros en la parte de la cola, sabrias que modelo estoy intentando recordar? Gracias
Back when jet engine sounds still have character
I wish Airtran was still in business. Great discount airline.
727 and MD-80 double trouble 😢
This with Jerry from @BigJetTV doing the commentary is what dreams are made of
Great video
Thank you!
In Europe 727 and 737 200 were rare sight in 2000, but not in USA.
I see Airtran never once changed their livery.
epik
JT8Ds ruled the skies back then!
Hardly any Airbus aircraft! What a difference 25 years can make.
Was flying MetroJet in/out of Atlanta that year.
From my own experience the golden age of commercial flying was from 1967- (the first half)1986. I say the first half because beginning in late '86 the first of several airline mergers took place where some legacy carriers disappeared altogether.
I dunno those Emirates & Singapore First suites you see today look pretty unbeatable 😍 But yeah, old planes were cool (747, D10, 306, etc.)
I bet that 757 at 4:00 minutes is still flying
Wow!! Couldn't identify half of 'em!! Just MD-88s, MD-11s, 727s and I guess DC-10?? With the 4 big engines?? I think! I know I've seen DC-8s, but they have much smaller engines, like 707s!! 😊

Not much has changed in 24 years compared to other airlines. Still alot of those 757s flying through ATL.
Very diverse of airines back then, when the competition was great.
Are those turbofan jet engines I hear occasionally?
I Flew on Some Classic Mcdonnal Douglas AIRLUNE
😂 WELL IT WAS. Peidmont Airlines. 1960to. 1980 , 89 😊

Hell yah
Sadly I've never gotten to fly on an MD 90. Delta should go back to the old cheatline livery.
Vintage 🛫 Lockheed Tristar . Boeing. McDonald Douglas. Airbus 😊
sad to see so many Airlines not in service anymore

Happy most of those noisy planes are long gone
Why are you commenting here? GTFO
36:58 moon shot
Anyone knows when exactly this was in 2000?
Every one of those MD-11 landings make me nervous......
Can you make a video at KLIA ( Kuala Lumpur International Airport)
You could almost count on one hand how many airbus were in this video.
“critter”…..
And Lufthansa still brings their a340-300 to ATL 😆
talk about MEMORIES !!!!
Back when Delta had 3-4 different liveries, confusing us all
KLM + Boeing 767, Northwest + Bae-146? Odd combinations
12:56 Northwest bae 146
L1011!!!
Is AirTran still around?
no, long gone
Delta Airlines, Delta Connection major hub.
Rip airTran
What about all that smog, looks like It could be in India or China
Only 1 aircraft in this video wearing the same livery in 2024!
no winglets to be found✈
One year before 911 attacks happened 2001
2000 21st century
I remember how ugly were the old Delta liveries back in the day. they had like four at the same time
Delta has always had an ugly livery
The widget that lasted through the 80s was my favorite
Wow. Air Tran. What a crappy airline.
It's so cool to know that I was on one of those L-1011s out of Atlanta in 2000!
