  • Thyroid Eye Disease, or Graves’ Disease, is an autoimmune condition where the body attacks the thyroid and tissues in the eye socket. Most of the time, eye issues can be treated medically, but it in more advanced cases, particularly when the optic nerve is being compressed, surgical intervention is required. Raymond Cho, MD, FACS, explains how ultrasonic bone aspiration-a technology available at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center-can provide orbital decompression with less risk to the surrounding tissue. My mom suffers from Grave's disease. She had the orbital decompression surgery. As they said it went well,
but right after yhe surgery she became almost completely blind.
The neurosurgent implied that we were quite late and that blood wasn't getting through her eye nerves, that's what was causing her eye failure. But it had been months that she was being treated by her endocrinologist and her opthalomogist trying to heal Grave's through medication.
It's been over a month now and her sight is less than 5%..
We've been to 4 different clinics and nobody could help. It comes a point where they all draw the same conclusion,
"There isn't much left to do, we did our best and anything possible, we now just have to wait and see.."
But we are waiting over a month as I said before and she can't see..!
Is there anything else we can try? Does it take that long to heal? And what happens in the cases that Grave's causes blindness? Are they irreversable??

Her nerves aren't responding. It's been nearly 3 months after the surgery. Some pieces of bones where removed for the decompression but maybe it was already too late.. Her one eye is gonna be completely blind for the rest of her life and the other is like at 5%. And all that from an "extreme" Grave's case
