Drumtochty Highland Games 2019 in Aberdeenshire Scotland with massed pipe bands, dancing & Heavies

Film of the 2019 Drumtochty Highland Games, held in the grounds of Drumtochty Castle at Auchenblae, Laurencekirk in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The massed pipes and drums are led into the games field by Drum major Walter Davidson and the Games are officially opened by guest Chieftain, Richard Paterson, master Whisky blender and distiller for Whyte & Mackay.
Leading Drum Major Walter Donaldson is from the Lonach Pipe Band and the other bands were Huntly & District Pipe Band, Towie Pipe Band, Newtonhill Pipe Band and the Howe o' the Mearns Pipe Band. The other Drum Majors were Neil Jamieson, Bert Summers, Bill Barclay and Derek Dean.
The film includes traditional Highland Games events, such as Highland Dancing, running races, high jump, long jump, tug o' war and the Heavies; hammer, shot put, weight over the bar and Caber Toss. Competitors in the Heavies included well known competitors Lukasz Wenta, Vlad Tulacek from the Czech Republic and Kyle Robert Randalls from Scotland. The caber toss is a traditional Scottish athletic event in which competitors toss a large tapered wooden pole called a "caber". The caber is usually made from a Larch tree and is typically 19 feet 6 inches tall and weighs 12.5 stone, but there are bigger and longer versions at some games, including at Aboyne and the Braemar Gathering.

I was at these games! My family and I had traveled from the US to Scotland to honor my late mother and our Scottish Barclay heritage. At the games, we got to meet Bill Barclay, Drum Major for the Towie Pipe Band, and he was gracious enough to talk to us and take a few photos with the family. Hi BM thanks again for posting this. Its a great way to see what goes on at Highland games for anyone thats never been before. Its a awful pity that there is non this year unless later on. I know I'm going to miss my holiday at Royal Deeside. Keep safe everyone.
