- After one of the greatest winning streaks in all of sports, the team principal for Mercedes-AMG Petronas-arguably the most impressive team in F1 racing history-finally had a losing season. He shares what he's learned, what’s changed about his leadership style, and what’s not. Harvard Business School professor Anita Elberse, who co-wrote a case study on Wolff’s management style and practices, interviews him about looking back at a tough season, and looking forward.

The day RBR engines failed in Bahrain, Mercedes regret the most. Because those were the days RBR and Honda learned the most.

Put it on a tile, because merc certainly isn't doing that right now. It's quite obvious that as far as aero goes, they haven't learnt all that much. They still don't get it at merc and i don't see that changing until the end of the regs. Add in that their engine can't handle increased ethanol content making them the third engine after RB and ferrari and they won't win any championships for at least several more years. For all that losing, the others don't regret much, they must be rather entertained by it.

So true it takes character to speak about failure. Similar to boxing I think and champion that is beaten and then regains the title shows another side of their character
Toto's values are really inspiring. Personally, professionally and organisationally. He has created a family atmosphere at Mercedes AMG F1, and as an F1 fan this is highly palpable week-in, week-out in the sense that you never ever hear references to in-fighting, unhappy drivers, contract issues, and most of toxic or negative cultural issues. It truly is the Wolff pack.
Let's see how many seasons Hamilton will accept being beaten by George. I think the fuse of the fireworks has already been lit this season, it's going to blow the next.

He's a great leader that takes care of his people. When they wanted to hire Russel, he made sure that Bottas first has a seat with a different team before signing Russels contract.
That hasn’t got much to do with being a good leader, he personally managed Bottas and had vested interest in finding him a seat on the grid.
@@capricornus993 Giving your team the best chance was ensuring Russell was at Mercedes. Being a good person was ensuring Valterri found a seat. Horner has one of the two. People tend to work harder for longer for the first scenario.

Toto is that kind of leader who inspires engineers, men, women and everyone at brackley & brixworth. He has a pure leadership, charisma, bringing the team in right direction. Surely one of the best f1 personality has ever had in its own history
So much leadership that all the top figures from the engine branch opted to move to RBPT instead of staying. Merc's racing team is a sinking ship and that is all thanks to Toto.

Horner is a better team principal because he has been in the high level racing gig himself and knows exactly what it takes to build a championship team. Wolffieboy on the other hand bought his way into Williams and later merc when they were on the verge of winning with that cheat of an engine. Horner is a racer and thus knows what is needed for success in racing, Wolffieboy is an investor who bought his way into it but has never done any meaningfull racing himself. That makes Horner the vastly better team principal.
There is no boss like Totto in F1. I love and respect him so much.

Love to learn from outstanding people on how they process challenges and failures.
It may be interesting to see an analysis of Ferrari and the decisions they have taken throughout this season, ultimately resulting in self inflicted losses whilst seemingly refusing to be introspective.
If you take for real what Binotto said that this year they had no plans to challenge the title but to get a good direction of car development, then they got it right. And the issues at Ferrari were not really scientific, they were human errors, like bad judgements calls on tires, a lot of bad calls on tires and pit stops. Also it does not help that Red Bull used 2 mil EUR on car development but written off as food expenses, so there's that.
@@_Florin Except RB didn't do that, but i guess it's easier for the LH cult to spread lies than face the facts. And even if they did, that was for the previous gen car, not the one from the last season. The only similarity between those two is that it has an engine, four wheels and needs fuel to drive. Those cars couldn't be more different, which anyone could understand who has at least a basic understanding of physics.
I don’t think Ferrari take feedback as well as Mercedes or RedBull hence why they’ll always self harm.
I was saying a few years ago that Toto's Mercedes journey would make for a good B-school case study. Always great to hear this guy talk.

Really good to hear this perspective from Toto. I usually prefer to cheer on the underdogs (not Mercedes the past few years) but I'm really interested to see how they'll perform next season once Russell gets settled in.

That is a very good Discussion, I think it highlights the need to trust your team and allow your team to make mistakes, the critical part is having a team that owns their mistakes, acknowledges what went wrong and learns from the mistakes. This requires a forward-thinking corporate culture.
Toto is spectacular and so is Harvard spot on intense even when you're losing clarity must be got to fast through the fogs of pain

Interesting to see the contrast between Mercedes and Ferrari. Ferrari could definitely learn a thing or two about introspection and being comfortable with mediocrity.
I don't like Mercedes team (only reason is that they are so dominant it makes F1 boring for a long time, I like underdog story), but hands to God I watched this with all my focus power. Deep down, I know that Toto is an excellent team leader and it's my dream to work for people like him.

Toto is incredibly bright and intelligent. It is always a treat to hear what he has to say. Mercedes will be back and it is astounding they did as well as the did given how fundamentally wrong they got the car.

Finishing 5. and 6. or 4. and 5. and suddenly you end up on the podium and you think it is a success, and it is not. You need to remind yourself how painful it is. Last year, that would have been seen as a defeat. It is still seen as a defeat but you have to remind yourself. This is not where we expect ourselves to be.

He was mean to Wehrlein by not letting him replace Rosberg in 2016 and badly managed him when he's the best German driver as he is the best in Formula e.
I like Toto and my favorite driver is Lewis. What I want him to explain what was going on in the 22 season. It I quit obvious that there was something, you don't go from 7 title's to no performance even some of the lower teams wasn't having the same problem wit their car. You don't go from cleaver to stupid overnight.
Update: A few days after recording this interview, Mercedes got a 1-2 in Brazil, with George Russell winning!
Win steak per season kept, and things are looking up for 2023.

Mercedes did not win beacuase of his leadership neither lose beacuse of him. It's all about engineering, strategy and serendipity of design. This is how Redbull beat Merecedes in 2022.
Sure RB aero is top because of Newey but RBs engine will never match Mercs. Each has their strengths.
