- A capybara mother gives birth at the zoo - but when she grows sick, she leaves her litter to fend for themselves. Will she recover?
The capybara or greater capybara is a giant cavy rodent native to South America. It is the largest living rodent and a member of the genus Hydrochoerus. The only other extant member is the lesser capybara.

Yeah but nothing in the universe can replace mom ❤
it's not ideal to lose your mom, even if you have a grandma. It's not the natural order and it's not 'whatever'...and zookeepers aren't the same species. Plus animals know their mom's scent markers and whatnot so they know they lost the most important individual in their lives. You could see their nostrils flaring as they huddled when mom was taken away.
She didn't abandon them, she got sick and died.

Why such a misleading title? She didn't abandon them she died! >:/ Its not like she decided she didn't want kids so she gave up the ghost, she took sick and wasn't able to recover.

Shut this zoo down, it’s a nightmare for the animals, I’ve now seen multiple occasions of them providing unacceptable low care and conditions for the animals… chimpanzees, orangutans, tapirs, capybaras etc
Just speculation but maybe not as many pups would’ve survived in the wild so maybe they should’ve just rehomed some of the pups or you know… euthanised them? It seems harsh but it’s clearly worse if the mother dies than a couple of pups early on. This is assuming they are correct about the strain on the immune system the pups caused.

Bruh sharing is caring mentality is already existing with families and Communist indeviduals,
but it could be systematic to global scale too, but for such we have to first break the chains that are given to us by bourgeoisie and then overthrow those bourgeoisies from power and abolish their private properties(means of productions) and once the means of productions are collectively and democratically owned by working class and then we can finally start paying people well for their labour, while we tax the enterprises & collective farms instead of working class people, and with those tax moneys we would fund free housing, education, healthcare.
Capybaras are our comrades, sharing is indeed caring, one for all and all for one 🚩✊.

Poor Lachley… she was such a good momma to her babies. So sad for those little babies. Lillie is amazing taking care of all 8 pups. I really do t mean to offend but even I could see the physical difference in her weight and coat from the video where she gave birth. I am surprised the keepers did t catch this sooner.

I had two cats that were pregnant at almost the same time. It was a mother and daughter. The daughter had her kittens first but wasn't the best of mom's. The mother kept taking her kittens. I was constantly taking them back and making sure they were fed by the daughter/mom. A week later when the mother/mom gave birth she took all her daughter's kittens. She was able to feed them all and her daughter/mom totally lost interest.

I wish the keepers would have placed her body into the enclosure for a little while so her pups, mom and mate could see and sniff her, to understand she died. I don’t know anything about capybaras, but I know many animals grieve, for example rhesus macaques and elephants grieve deeply.
Does anyone know about how capybaras grieve or behave when a close relative dies? Even if her infection was contagious they could place her where they could see her.
Guess I’m going to have to investigate capybara grief now. Poor mamabary, RIP.
