    Today we take a look at the second oil analysis I’ve had done in a row, on the BMW E60 M5.
    Let’s see how the rod bearings are shaping up!

    For the first 4.5 years of ownership I had 3 oil analysis checks which came back pretty good , it was only when i was speaking to an M mechanic I know that mentioned these checks do not guarantee and are not accurate so I thought about it for a few months and decided to have the main bearings changed as the car was on 91,000 miles which Im glad I did because I had a lot of wear on cylinder ten which was down to copper plus a couple of other cylinder’s showed them heading that way , I was told there was probably only a couple of thousand miles left in the shells before a catastrophic failure , he also found a snapped chain tensioner ( plastic piece of one end) which was lucky as well , best £1900 I ever spent tbh considering if the engine goes down in one of these it’s around 10k to sort it out , the reason why the mechanic mentioned this was because it’s happened to quite a few guys before that have had catastrophic failures believing their bearing shells are fine because of an oil test , just giving you the heads up that all. 👍🇬🇧
    PS: this prompted me to change all ten injectors for piece of mind as well ( hydrolock ) the main expensive preventative maintenance is now done which is a relief tbh.

      Cheers, taking oil samples is recognised in many industries as an effective bearing monitoring tool that’s non intrusive, that can give an indication of excessive wear, but it is just an indication. It has to be done right though. I’ve always said in many of my previous videos if there is any uncertainty there is no substitute for removing the bearings to inspect- for 100% certainty, but of course to get to that point can be an intrusive/expensive exercise

      You make a good point though. If a previous owner had driven the car hard from cold, and you’ve done everything correct with regards to warming the engine up, regular oil changes etc, it’s likely any new oil samples aren’t going to show that previous wear. My bearings where new when I bought my M5, so I know exactly how it’s been driven/looked after on these bearings

      Original bearings- increased levels of copper & lead

    Hi guy as you know my m5 has only 12k on clock and this year only covered 1000 miles would you still advise me to change the oil ???🤷‍♂️

      If the oil is a year old, I would change it

    Please be careful with these oil analysis. I had 100% clean oil analysis every oil change from 63k miles until 147k miles. Finally decided to do rod bearings anyways and cylinder 8 was showing copper. By the time anything shows up on the Blackstone analysis, the bearings should have been changed awhile ago.

      My bearings where new when I bought my M5, for sure though- if the car still had the original bearings the oil samples only give a snap shot between current oil changes, there is always a chance wear could be present from a previous owner if it wasn’t looked after properly in the past

    The problem here is, per your prior comment, you don’t know what kind of bearings were installed. So you don’t know what you’re looking for. Pointless.

      They’re either copper/lead or tin/aluminium- that’s exactly what I’m looking for, to determine if there is an increase in either- that was the whole point of the exercise

    Yeah, and the S85 is made of aluminum. Pointless.
