You have no idea HOW MUCH this helped my indecisive self. I was spending hours on amazon, youtube and google trying to figure out what paper to get and was so close to giving up. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!
Let me shorten this for you people. Arteza 100% cotton cold pressed paper is comparable to Arches at double the price. Absurd.
The remaining 110lb papers are comparable to Canson Blue Cover watercolor paper and Strathmore 400 series.
If you dont like granulation, dont get 100% cotton cold pressed- get hot pressed.
If you like to use a lot of H2O then tape and clip your individual sheets down. All paper will warp or buckle if you treat it like Niagara Falls. *Edited for typo.
Is that 110 lb paper good for watercolor florals

Thank you for the in-depth review of the Arteza Watercolor papers. I appreciate the time-stamps, which helped me to go back to look at certain papers.
Really interesting testing, thanks for being so thorough! My best guess for the white speckling and the other issues on the cotton paper is poor sizing and/or poor bleaching of the paper, rather the pigments. I've never seen those effects on other cotton papers, however I mostly use Fabriano and Arches so can only compare to those. The pricing is actually higher than for other cotton papers [Arteza: $25 USD for 14 sheets of 9"x12" vs. Arches: $11 USD for 12 sheets of 9"x12" at Blick] so would be reluctant to invest in that paper. The other papers seem to be much more reasonably priced. The laid texture of the first paper seems similar to the Canson XL Mixed Media pads, which I don't mind.
I believe they bound the books with alternate pages smooth and textured in case you wanted to use both open pages for one project for bigger canvas, you wouldn't want facing pages to be different textures.
Very good reviews and such good information too! Thanks for clearing up the choices over at Arteza there are a lot of options and it is confusing to know which paper to use for which project!

That Arteza 100% cotton paper is actually more expensive than ARCHES. Like, seriously.....lmao

Just a quick note: hot press (the smooth side) always looks like its peeling, even Arches. Its weird. But.. when the paper dries, those little blobs dry to an even wash, no peeling up in sight. Also, I think in the journals they try to do the same “finish” of paper so if you want to do a large 2 page spread, you’re working with the same type of paper (hot press or cold press.) I just received the 32 Expert pad today but haven’t had a chance to play yet as I’m finishing up a commission. I bought it in the hopes that It’ll be decent enough to use in an Art Therapy class I’ll be teaching. Having to supply the supplies can get spendy ☹️.
I can so relate to this (being both an art teacher and art therapist in the past) having to supply the art supplies adds up!

I'll probably get the 100% cotton paper for my water based markers and my watercolor pencils, not for actual watercolor paint unfortunately. I don't like the texture of the premium watercolor paper either.
Did you end up getting the cotton pad? I hate my brush markers on the mixed media and the expert paper wish I would have seen this review sooner

Nephtalie Albert Good cold press watercolor paper allows for granulation. Hot press paper is provides a smooth result.
Thank you for this review. I have been using the linen covered journals and the expert pulp pad. They are very soft paper that damages easily. You cannot use masking fluid with them without significant damage to the paper. Even taping down with washi tape slightly damages the edges. I would like to know if you have tried masking fluid on the cotton paper with success?
Thank you so much for doing the comparisons on these papers. I just bought the Expert non-100% cotton paper on a Lightning Deal and I didn't even know until now that it WASN'T 100% cotton. Doh! I thought, "yay! i scored a great deal on 100% cotton watercolor paper" since I knew they had an "Expert" 100% cotton paper. Ah well...still not as bad as their Premium one...I agree, I don't really enjoy it. I got it as an Amazon warehouse deal and figured if I didn't enjoy it for watercolors, my kids could use it for their crafts :P

You are my watercolor paper Godess right now! I've been sampling papers on Amazon trying to find something that's not complete trash but isn't going to break my poor Niffler bank open and I was so confused about the variety avaliable by arteza and you completely went above and beyond what I had hoped I might find in a review. It took some hunting on TH-cam to find your video but you've just gained a new subscriber and a new worshiper of the great goddess of watercolor papers lol.
This video would be extremely helpful if not so long and with repeating parts ..

So, which paper is best for watercolor brush pens? Still unclear to me.
Well, I just tried the Expert non-cotton wc paper... Found out the hard way... does not do well with brush pens :(

I just got an arteza bundle of 60 watercolor and the 140lb block but I hate the paper, it just spreads everywhere, I can't make a detail portrait paint on it because it's not holding the shape of the water, it just spreads over the dry area instead of staying on the area I draw, that doesn't happens with other watercolor papers like the canson one
The expert watercolor paper what color is it, is it white off-white light beige because I’m thinking about getting it if it’s light beige I’m not gonna get it.
I wish I would have seen this prior to purchasing the expert watercolor pad and mixed media paper pad, as I primarily use brush pens which I find they are horrid at the pigment stays put and doesnt budge at all disappointing
TL;DR: She's uncertain about most things. Confused by everything. Confident in nothing.
