I don't want him to lose it but the baby brother or sister is coming and I knew it would happen. It just makes me happy he's getting older but sad because of the bond you share with the child. Did you know she's cutting him off early. In the wild she would have kids up to 7 breastfeeding off the mother. She would even allow her neieces and nephews as well. This behavior she's showing is because they don't have a big enough troop so the boys got cut off waaaaaay too early. It's just a shame. I'm not going to sit here and say I wish they were free. Orangutans nurse up to 7 years but 9 years in extreme circumstances. No primate is allowing another primate to feed from them if they a) still have nursing responsibilities b) the other baby has to be motherless. I have zero clue as to where you got all this poor information. Also Genki is not pregnant yet, her and Momo just started their dance and I've not seen one successful mating session. In my reading/watching vids (I've turned into an old lady gorillaphile to survive the pandemic 🤗) gorillas captive and wild usually wean between ages 3 and 4. However, it is not unusual to see youngsters 5 to 7 yrs occasionally ask for and receive a suckle especially during a stressful situation. Kintaro will be out of sorts for awhile, but he'll survive and he is surrounded by a tight family unit for support and safety.

The weaning can also depend on the gender of the baby. Males have a tendency to suckle longer than females. There are several other factors involved also, dietary conditions (this one probably wouldn't factor into it because there is plenty of food), how many males are in the group, etc. So, guess Genki also has a say as to WHEN she wants to let Kintaro go. (Information available on Google "Dian Fossey Foundation.") Very interesting, but a lot to read and digest.

Thats one of the many differences of an animal that shares much of our DNA. There’s a reason why they don’t share all of our DNA….because primates would never be able to handle it. It takes them a lifetime to mature out of the infant stage…..imagine if they were cut off from the breast nipple at 11 months of age. They might actually grow up and mature sooner.
