    The word "electrocuted" is a misnomer here. It means to be killed or severely injured by electricity (think also of a lightning bolt). A better name for what just happened to Sumomo and Momoko, who were in physical contact, is "zapped." These hot wires are surely intermittent (or pulsing) like the ones used for horse pastures-if not intermittent, the continuing jolt is strong enough to kill birds. Horses will put their inquisitive noses on it only once! And it‘s a pretty good sting and causes you to jump back-it‘s happened to me when I wasn‘t paying attention, and definitely wakes you up. But it doesn’t do any damage. Just resets your memory! Lots of outdoor gorilla enclosures have them strung around the walls and top edges to prevent escapes (think Tayari) and around trees, which otherwise the gorillas will yank out by the roots (think Kintaro) or munch to the ground. Once the trees grow big enough to survive some gorilla abuse, the wires are removed . . . without them the enclosures would have no shade and look like deserts or moors, and we‘d all be complaining about that! In other words, don‘t worry-the zoo peeps are not dumb.🦍🤩🤗❤

      @@chericonnolly4810 I traveled across three Rocky Mountain states with my sweetie by team and wagon-two draft horses. Every night we put a up a hot wire pasture for them so they could stretch and roll. Even the big boys respected that wire. The only time they busted out, I was traveling alone with them, and a moose strolled into camp at 3:00 a.m. and all hell broke loose! The moose went one way and Pancho & Lefty the other way, a half mile down the creek. Took me a couple hours in the dark on foot to round them up and re-string the fence. Good boys, they came when I yodeled!

    I have observed precious Sumomo interactions with her sister Momoka and I've gotten the distinct impression that she (Sumomo) does not like being with her (Momoka). Momoka is both rough and aggressive (as all the siblings can be) but she is still very young and inexperienced. Komomo has rescued that beautiful baby from her sister on a couple occasions. Sumomo knows who she wants to be with. In this video not only did she try to get away from Momoka, but she also bit her a couple times in her bid for freedom. Komomo to the rescue (she always appears to be looking out for her little sister). Poor Momoka, she looks as though she does not understand why Komomo looks to escape her company.😢

    • @pamcunningham9608
      @pamcunningham9608 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I think you're right. Momoka just doesn't know as much about dealing with a baby as Komomo seems to, and Sumomo can tell the difference. Momoka is trying, though, and although she's a bit clumsy I think she loves the baby just as they all do, she's just not really sure how to handle her. Komomo has a much better feel for mothering at the moment, but Momoka is learning! She'll have time to get better at it.

      @@MrKevy40 Momoko is the mother who has given birth to Komomo, Momoka and Sumomo (in that order). Momoko became very ill after the birth of Sumomo, so she was raised separately from the troop while Momoko recovered. Since her reintegration with the troop it's been the eldest daughter, Komomo, who's taken on a majority of the parenting duties for Sumomo, although Momoko does quite a lot as well. Momoka is trying, but she's just not up to speed yet. It's confusing because of the names, I hope that helps!

      It's a very low voltage but still can't be very pleasant for them, not really painful but a nasty sensation, which is why they know to keep away from it after touching it. I remember touching an electric fence at a dairy farm when I was a kid, just out of curiosity about how it felt. I understood right away why the cows quickly learned to avoid it. I read the fences enable the zoo to add more foliage to the gorilla's enclosures; they tend to eat and tear apart new trees and bushes when they're very small so the electric fences allow the plants to grow without being destroyed.

    All gorilla enclosures without roofs have electric fences. How else to keep something that can climb so well inside? If we want them to have any foliage at all in the enclosure then it has to be protected to grow, they they put the electric wire around the grown trees to protect those. I wonder if they are aware that the electricity will pass through one gorilla to the next. The wires do not hurt, they shock. Farmboys play with them all the time, and gorillas risk getting shocked to eat what is behind them all the time.

      Gorilla babies certainly like trying out their new teeth on anything and anyone! But they never seem to really hurt each other when they're play fighting, so either they just instinctively know not to bite too hard or they have much tougher hides than humans do. If human kids played that way with each other it would be a bloodbath.😆

    • @katewaterbaby
      @katewaterbaby ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@aruba531 The boo-boo definitely helps! It’s taken me forever to start picking them out, especially when you only get a quick glimpse or side/back view. Here are some hints I‘ve discovered: Komomo also has a longer face 5:09 than sister Momoka, who actually has quite a heart-shaped face when you see her straight on and up close (from a broad brow with a very slight dip in the middle, down to almost a pointy chin, but you can‘t see it too well in this vid 6:10). Her thighs are a little more chunky and her body thicker and less streamlined than Komomo, who sometimes looks as sleek and black as a seal). From the back, Momoka‘s crest is lower and a little bumpy. Riki has no bright white on the sides of his face yet: 4:27. And his hair tuft at the top back of his head is still just a whisp; it hasn’t started developing into a crest yet. He also has a couple of odd small oval bare spots on either side of his waist, from what I don‘t know, and the hair may grow in. Now if you hope to tell them apart by their feet, I’m hopeless! Happy🦍watching!🤗🤒💕

      I think all the female names in the family are formed around the Japanese word for peach, "Momo". Momoko means "peach child" and Komomo and Momoka are variations of it. Not sure what the syllable "Su" in Sumomo's name means. Also, I may be wrong but I think Momoko is the mother of Kyoto Zoo's young silverback Momotaro, whose name is from an old Japanese folk tale and means something like "peach boy" or "little peach", which is hilarious now because he's freakin' enormous.😁

    • @yvonnejones9940
      @yvonnejones9940 ปีที่แล้ว

      The electric wires are a deterrent. They are not strong enough to kill but act to reinforce a behavior such as no climbing the walls or tearing up the trees. A loose gorilla can mean injury to visitors (A male gorilla who recently passed at one time jumped up 9 to 12 feet to escape seriously injuring a person) and a loose gorilla can mean death to it. To me this appears to be the better of a necessary evil.

Getting angry at what is dumb stupid idiot gorilla she looks like just dragging her little sister from her mom when her mom's house looking if that was any other older brother or older sister doing that to a young infant I would say the same thing thank God for the oldest sister though she already knows if the gorilla baby is feverish with her or the mom I usually see her after she spent some time with the gorilla baby always brings her back to momoko the mom

    Poor baby! In her curiosity, she reached out and got electrocuted. I also noticed how she kept trying to leave Momoka, and go to Komomo. Sumomo was biting Momoka, at least twice. Komomo holds Sumomo all the time, and doesn't put her down. Momoka encourages her to walk, and Riki encourages her to play.

    There has to be a better way with these beautiful animals other than electric fences Good grief they seem to be everywhere in their yard Its their only place they can go and you put these fences up It should be against the darn law This is cruel There are many zoos that have gorillas and shure don't have electric fences in there hebetate Unreal this is allowed What you are doing here is making it look good to the human eye by making humans think these gorillas are living in a somewhat natural environment What good is it if these poor animals are zapped just so you can grow trees in their environment and make it look pretty to humans Check with the Smithsonian in America and see how they take care of their Gorillas
