Not a special thing for this song but in general, spring is a "season of farewells and encounters" for Japanese people as almost all schools in Japan has their graduation ceremonies in March and entrance ceremonies in April. And also March and April - when it starts getting warmer - are the season when cherry blossom blooms in most part of Japan (except for northern part where it blooms around the beginning of May). Most of schools in Japan have cherry blossoms on its ground somehow.
Lots of Japanese people experienced farewells and encounters on the season with cherry blossoms blooming (btw these days the climate change causes it shifting though), and the duration of blooming is very short - it makes people feel things beauty and fleeting. The warmer the season gets and the more trees of cherry blossom put out buds, the more people foresee a feeling of missing someone precious (like their friends or teachers) with their graduation. And after cherry blossoms falling, they will meet someone new or reunite at entrance ceremony.
All these precious memories at the moments is associated to spring and cherry blossom, as many Japanese songs, novels, poets, animes, dramas and movies describe it.
