I'm a native Japanese speaker and I think you're right about the vowels. This video is perfect for making your case because the differences between Uru and Lisa really demonstrate what you're talking about. If people pronounced their vowels like Lisa does in speech, it would sound really odd and exaggerated. Uru's vowels sound much closer to how they would sound in actual speech. For those of you who can read Japanese, there's a moment when they both sing the word 感じて, but Lisa definitely hits it like 感じてぇ~ while Uru does it a lot more like you would in regular speech. Tristan also points it out. This was SUPER enlightening to me as a Japanese person. Now I know how to improve my renditions of Lisa when I go to karaoke
Now im curious. Your (awesome) comment was made 3 weeks ago. Did you go to karaoke on those weeks? If so, how did it go? Please tell me you rocked Lisa's songs!!!
For anyone curious as to how 感じて sounds, it is romanized as “Kanjite”, which means feel. (I’m glad I can read at least some Japanese). Time stamp: 11:19
I really appreciate you recognising the difference in languages and trying to learn from the comments section, thank you!! So I thought I could chip something in as well as a native Japanese speaker myself. I believe the way Uru sings is quite close to how Japanese vowels normally sound when speaking. Japanese language itself sounds quite flat so many Japanese singers (often rock singers?) inclusing LiSA exaggerate their vowels when singing to sound more dramatic. I thought it was simply a stylistic choice and only found out from this video that there are practical reasons behind the technique. Also there are only 5 vowels in Japanese so it could be easier to take artistic liberties like this because people can still understand the lyrics even after changing vowels while singing.
Totally true about the "stylistic modification" from LiSA. It's easier to do that customization because there aren't any dipthong vowel sounds, no æ or anything like that. LiSA often does that with "a" when she sings "æ" or "u" (like in "yuku") she sings something like "eh," if that makes sense. 🤧
@@theperfectprettygirl5194 Yes totally makes sense! You explained it better with more technical terms 😂 When people do this with songs in English it's a lot harder to understand the lyrics, like Ariana Grande...
@@seafog no worries. If I'm being honest, I only sing as a hobby. I don't have much musical background so these are mere observations on my part. But I like languages a lot so I'm glad I commented myself. About Japanese rock singers, totally agree. Most times, I do a double take, especially when they use English phrases. On another note, this trend actually still holds true for Western rock artists like Fall Out Boy. As a non-native English speaker, it's always been a struggle for me. They have this powerful and assertive way of stressing on each syllable. And don't get me started on the screaming. I love the texture but I can't understand what they're saying at all. 🤣
Aimer and Minami, also I'd love to see his reaction to Vinland Saga's opening by Survive Said The Prophet, we haven't really seen any metal songs here (if I'm not wrong)
As someone who's studied and spoken Japanese in the States and Japan for a grand total of a decade, I found this video to be super enlightening! Hope you nerd out about vowels again soon! P.S. Your pronunciation of Uru is spot-on! 👍
I don't wanna be that guy, but saying "spot on" is quite misleading. (think about people who genuinly wanna leanr the language and struggle with pronounciation, now they think this was perfect) I agree that it is very good for someone like him saying it, but the う sound was not at all even close to perfect, aswell as saying うるー instead of うる you probably are familliar with the concept of the importance of how long you pronounce each vowel in Japanese, that each vowel or syllable needs its own time within a word you could nit pick more on the actual "r" in his る itself, but it was actually very good despite not sounding perfect the point of this is to highlight for anyone who might be mislead by your words, who have a genuine interest in learning. And yes, I understand that you were giving him praise because he expressed how he thought he butchered it, when it was very good for someone who doesn't learn this language, which is completly fine. But then again, my point was to highlight for those who actually learn and might get confused. EDIT: forgot to mention that the intonation, one of the most important things that actually make it sound japanese to begin with and not foreign, was also completly off
@@SnessFresh Even though I clearly acknoweledged that it was good for someone like him (who doesn't learn it) you are yet filled with the urge to mindlessly point out that which has already been mentioned. Probably caus' you wanna feel important or something. As for the only point of your own which you actually brought up, he didn't acknowledge *how* it sounds, that would make him say it right in turn. No, he merely acknowledged that the sound was different than what saying "ru" with an american pronounciation sounds like. Wow! What an accomplishment!!!!!!!!!!! ... the difference is huge.

When you noticed that they sing the same vowel, The lyrics said "Let's meet again with smile". They use their voice to tell the story. The song is about loneliness and the hope to meet again. Uru lyrics is mostly about the feeling inside. The loneliness, The cold, the though. While Lisa is more about expressing the feeling directly. Say goodbye with smile and tears, Want to see, want to meet. Those were express through different kind of voices. Until the lyrics said the feeling that they both sharing. Their voice overlap in the same tone with the feeling of more hopefulness and positivity.
can you react to tk singing unravel on the first take? He has a really interesting voice and I think you'd enjoy it a lot. One of the comments on that video is that tk is said to have the most stable unstable singing voice lol
Singing vowels can be super nit picky and overly specific where speech can be very loose in comparison. Which says a lot because if you've ever tried to learn another language getting the speech vowels to sound right is really difficult!
@@tristanparedes thank you for that, I now understand why I find it to difficult to sing in other languages! I can speak two, but I'm so much more comfortable singing in my non-english language(1st lang) Very interesting!
If you're looking for more content from The First Take, YOASOBI's Yoru Ni Kakeru and Milet's Inside You are two of my personal favorites. Really talented artists.
I might be biased but I think LiSA's voice is very very unique and just so amazing because how it carries emotion. It's so granular and she has such good control of it but also lets it roam freely.

TK from ling tosite singing "copy light " and "unravel" (the first take) its really good, and hiroyuki sawano with survive said the prophet "belong" and hiroyuki sawano "aliez"
this song was so good too im just starting to learn japanese and beeing able to somewhat understand what they are singing and how both singers sing diferently depending on the part of the song and what's happening in the song story is just SO BEAUTIFULL

I know someone already commented it, but I really want you to react to TK's performance in First Take. I want to know how you will see and explain his voice because it's seriously amazing.
Their voices are SO different. One would be warmer/darker and the other brighter. I wouldn't say I think either of them would be in my list of favorite singers but I love a power vocal so there's that. You introduce me to perks I've never heard of because I'm almost 49 and don't have time 😆.
13:19 What a great way to diffuse the seriousness of clarifying singing vowels/spoken vowels. Instead of saying "you don't know what you're talking about please stop telling me to how to do my job" , you say "I didn't do a good enough job explaining". I've been watching a few different "vocal coach reacts" creators and you're the only one I subscribe to and don't skim through. Really great content, man. Glad to be here.
For a " The First Take " video, I'd highly recommend Shout Baby by 緑黄色社会 . One of my favorites from The First Take, starts with nothing but singing, instruments join in later. Also keep doin' whatever you're doing, it's entertaining.
Come on Tristan!!! You need to react to the other first takes and home takes. There are so many good good and unique singers on there. Like Yoasobi. The singer is called the perfect mix of the anime/machine-like accuracy and the human-like emotion. I think you’ll like it!! The song “yorunikakeru”.
I personally think, that it’s rare to see singers like LiSA, who sings in a very high, light vocal tone, mostly suitable for anime openings, and that’s why everyone loves her music.
Yea the low tones of her voice makes it so interesting. I love the subtle changes of her vowels that someone in the video didn't comment about because he's more focused on LiSa. Anyways, her control of the high pitches on that low voice is very amazing. For me, that is really talent. She should be proud to go toe-to-toe with a superstar.
I really need to thank tristan for showing me these LiSA's songs. I knew about her from the song Ichiban no Takaramono but that's all. Gurenge is now my number 1 song for running and jogging and homura is just my favorite cause I love ballad songs. And now this... thank you. If you have more recommendations from LiSA please tell me.
Really enjoyed the deeper dive into vowels, in this video. Think people just trying to cause drama last time. Singing and talking voice are similar but also very different and distinct, as you stated earlier. Tbh, never got any ignorant nor ill intentions, when reviewing voices, from you. You’re pretty honest, transparent and informative, and that’s why we watch you and subscribe you.
Uru & Lisa - both very popular singer in Japan right now, this song is an AD to Sony's earbuds which is produced by AYASE (a very popular producer from the group YOASOBI) I Recommend , relating to this video : - URU - Freesia (OST For Iron Blooded Orphans) - YOASOBI - Yoru ni Kakeru / Racing Into The Night

I love the way japanese words sound, and the way both of this singers played w the sounds 💕 if i had another unique singer to suggest i would say Take ‘first light’ would be a good checkout :)

Great list! Not enough people recommending Ryokuoushoku Shakai in these comments. Her vocals are probably the most impressive out of everyone on the channel except for Lisa imo
To be honest, your first reaction to Lisa really helped me understand why my voice sounded too dark for my liking. Ever since, I've been playing with my tone using different mouth shapes. Your reactions really help bring awareness to the subtleties of the instrument. Keep up the awesome videos!
I've grown up listening to lots of Japanese music for more than half of my life, but I love the amount of detail/explanation you put into this video. Please do more foreign music!!
i'm pretty late in finding this video oops, but that was a key change at the end, sort of. it's what's called a "tierce di picardie" in music theory speak, and what it is is when a song which is otherwise in a minor key ends in a major chord / cadence. this whole song is in G minor, which turns into G# (or Ab) minor for the final chorus; but then ends on an Ab major chord, which is the tierce di picardie in question. i'm a musician myself but not really a singer (i sing for fun and don't really know much of the theory behind it), so learning more about how you can change vowel sounds so much is really interesting!
Okay, First Take Recommendations: 1. Anything from ReoNa, I specifically recommend Anima 2. Super Beaver, anything as well, Hitoshitite is my favorite 3. Stray Kids on the first take 4. SawanoHiroyuki[nZk]:Yosh (Survive Said The Prophet) - BELONG 5. SawanoHiroyuki[nZk]:mizuki - aLIEz 6. Queen Bee, this singer just has a super interesting style 7. TK from 凛として時雨 - unravel, this is also a very iconic anime opening 8. ReN- We'll be fine 9. Def Tec, a super interesting duo 10. SKY-HI Luce, he is a rapper 11. Flower Companyz - an older band but an amazing one Anime/Other Japanese Artists 1. Taka and One OK Rock 2. Burnout Syndromes
Japanese is really simple, there are only 5 vowels: - A ("ah" as in father) - I ("ee" as in see) - U ("ooh" as in you) - E ("eh" as in air) - O ("oh" as in go) Hope this helps if you analyse another Japanese song 😄
Rei Yasuda's, "Brand New Day," on The First Take is really great. She has an interesting band with her as well. Ryokuoushoku's and Yui's songs are good too. Milet's, "Inside You," or, "Drown," has some English to it (like, actual English). I think it could be interesting to analyze how she switches from one language to another in singing. My personal favourite is Aimer's song called, "Words." She hasn't shown up in The First Take unfortunately because she's shy from what I know. "Haru wa yuku," (Spring ver.) by her live is on youtube and it's probably the closest she'll get to TFT. IF you want just a feel-good song though, "Kataomoi," by the same artist is her most popular song (?) and it's just sweet. "Torches," by her again (I love this artist) also has some English like Milet's and both of their songs are from the same anime. ("Us," by Aimer live in. Budokan is also good) Enjoyed the reactions, I've just been camping here, waiting every Japanese song you'll react to. Oh, and don't worry about the pronunciation of their names too much. You got Uru's really well. :3
please do unravel by ling tosite sigure and/or asphyxia by co shu nie form the first take 🙏i think they both have really unique voices that i would love to hear your take on!
Tristan, Uru is part of Hiroyuki Sawano's [nzk] Project which both LiSA and Aimer have appeared alongside/been a part of with quite a few other top talents. Think of Sawano as the David Foster of the anime scene. The guy is a genius when it comes to picking out talent for his soundtracks for anime and J-dramas.
Everyone falls under either category: You love LiSA You just haven't found out about LiSA yet There's nothing in between you're just bound to love her and it's a matter of time P. S. I probably messed up my english there I hate being bilingual

@@markb4613 I don't get the Lisa hype lol. She's good but I like plenty female artists including uru more
Please react to Racing into The Night by YOASOBI both the song and The First Take because she sings them differently
okay!!
OMG YES ....you need to listen to this masterpiece in both of its' versions!!😍
The story behind it is also amazing!!!
You should definitely react to First Take of Ling tosite Sigure - Unravel!
God i really love you explanation, binged watched your vids for these past few weeks!
thank you and am a fam now!
regards from a new subscriber~
Haha there's still at least 2 more, Catch the Moment and Unlasting. Both original songs by LiSa
I'm in love with tristan reacting to LiSA and other singers from Japan. More of this please ❤❤☺
I wanna see what Tristan will think of Yaosobi. Would love to see him react to them!!!
You are really good! Your explanations make sense and I can now listen the different points/voyels you're pointing at.
Yes. You pronounced Uru's name correctly. She has beautiful voice. Love both Lisa and Uru. Please react to more Uru songs.
Tristan, have you checked Aimer? She's also a JPOP singer and her voice is also amazing! Different style than LISA though
While URU is singing like she is in total control over the song, LiSA BECOMES the song, fully and passionately immerses herself into it
Uru & Lisa - both very popular singer in Japan right now, this song is an AD to Sony's earbuds which is produced by AYASE (a very popular producer from the group YOASOBI)
I Recommend , relating to this video :
- URU - Freesia (OST For Iron Blooded Orphans)
- YOASOBI - Yoru ni Kakeru / Racing Into The Night
Yoooo u know this is random but I got a solo today for A Million Dreams from The Greatest Showman for my choir at school. I'm kind of nervous but I think I'll do fiiiiiine
Bro my school is doing This Is Me from the Greatest Showman at our concert tomorrow (I have a few solos that I'm nervous about too but not in that song)
@@ceciliastuart5697 ooo the upper choir class is singing that song in my school
You can do it ( Im so late)
I love the way japanese words sound, and the way both of this singers played w the sounds 💕 if i had another unique singer to suggest i would say Take ‘first light’ would be a good checkout :)
Any song by E ve is amazing as well as Yorushika. They're my favorite jpop artists. You wanna hear some insane vocals, then listen to Minami and Ado.
This is so helpful I’ve been trying to get into singing but just by listening to you talk about this subject is easier to understand
first take Tk unravel is fantastic would love to see it
This is very informative! Was wondering how the last part is so in sync in the sound and this definitely explains it. Love these singers
I would like to recommend you some of interesting videos from this channel:
DISH// - Neko
YOASOBI - Gunjo
Yuuri - Dry Flower
The Gospellers - Hitori
Little Glee Monster - Dear My Friend feat.Pentatonix
Da-iCE - CITRUS
ZUTOMAYO - Byoushin wo Kamu
Ryokuoushoku Shakai - sabotage
LiSA - Catch the Moment
Great list! Not enough people recommending Ryokuoushoku Shakai in these comments. Her vocals are probably the most impressive out of everyone on the channel except for Lisa imo
This is the comment I was looking for! Ryokuoushoku Shakai's vocalist is absolutely fantastic.
@@Jack-st2cc I agree 💯
I wanna add Racing Into The Night or Yasashii Suisei by YOASOBI too just to have a solo Ikura with different songs.
YES dude so many of these are amazing
To be honest, your first reaction to Lisa really helped me understand why my voice sounded too dark for my liking. Ever since, I've been playing with my tone using different mouth shapes. Your reactions really help bring awareness to the subtleties of the instrument. Keep up the awesome videos!
Can you react to Fuyu no hanashi? It is from an anime called ‘Given’ and I think it is amazing 😁
Omgg i just discovered your channel, it’s rare to see someone reacting to herr🥺🥺💕💕
Please react to Yoasobi on The First Take 🥰
This is the duet I didn't know I needed
Could you react to Hakujtsu (白日) by King Gnu? Everything about that song is PERFECT 🤩
I've grown up listening to lots of Japanese music for more than half of my life, but I love the amount of detail/explanation you put into this video. Please do more foreign music!!
React also to Unlasting by Lisa in First take. Its really really good
tristan your guides are amazing...they help me a lot :") thank you
Please react to Yoasobi and Tk unravel. They are both really good.
i'm pretty late in finding this video oops, but that was a key change at the end, sort of. it's what's called a "tierce di picardie" in music theory speak, and what it is is when a song which is otherwise in a minor key ends in a major chord / cadence. this whole song is in G minor, which turns into G# (or Ab) minor for the final chorus; but then ends on an Ab major chord, which is the tierce di picardie in question.
i'm a musician myself but not really a singer (i sing for fun and don't really know much of the theory behind it), so learning more about how you can change vowel sounds so much is really interesting!
Tristann, please react to TK - Unravel from FIRST TAKE and maybe compare it with his music video.
Of all of LiSA’s openings and outros are iconic
I have returned. When there is LiSA then I am here!
and this video meets the needs of my lifestyle (it was smoother in my head)
YOASOBI has some of the most eargasm-inducing first takes, you can't go wrong with any song you pick
I'm loving these FIRST TAKE reactions, keep 'em coming😊
All of LiSA’s music is 👌🏾
Okay, First Take Recommendations:
1. Anything from ReoNa, I specifically recommend Anima
2. Super Beaver, anything as well, Hitoshitite is my favorite
3. Stray Kids on the first take
4. SawanoHiroyuki[nZk]:Yosh (Survive Said The Prophet) - BELONG
5. SawanoHiroyuki[nZk]:mizuki - aLIEz
6. Queen Bee, this singer just has a super interesting style
7. TK from 凛として時雨 - unravel, this is also a very iconic anime opening
8. ReN- We'll be fine
9. Def Tec, a super interesting duo
10. SKY-HI Luce, he is a rapper
11. Flower Companyz - an older band but an amazing one
Anime/Other Japanese Artists
1. Taka and One OK Rock
2. Burnout Syndromes
Japanese is really simple, there are only 5 vowels:
- A ("ah" as in father)
- I ("ee" as in see)
- U ("ooh" as in you)
- E ("eh" as in air)
- O ("oh" as in go)
Hope this helps if you analyse another Japanese song 😄
I WAS WAITING FOR THIS ONE
YESSS MORE LISAAA!!! 😍🤩
Shout Baby on The First Take!!! you're gonna be blown away
I highly recommend TK from 凛として時雨 - unravel first take cuz I absolutely love this song and would love to hear your thoughts :3
also queen bee fire is a very good bop
Budokan is also good)
Enjoyed the reactions, I've just been camping here, waiting every Japanese song you'll react to.
If you did a Madison beer reaction, your allergies WILL go🥴
I really like voices that are soft and soothing ^^ love hers 💖
Everyone falls under either category:
You love LiSA
You just haven't found out about LiSA yet
There's nothing in between you're just bound to love her and it's a matter of time
P. S. I probably messed up my english there I hate being bilingual
don’t hate being bilingual . it’s a blessing to know two languages :)
also you didn’t mess up :)
You can give me your other language and only have one language left. Solved all our problems ,say thanks
Their voices are like fire and water/ice in this song.
