I clip in on the gravel bike. Used to ride clipless years ago but went to flats for my mountain bikes. Zero issues with the knees or the legs with either pedal set up. And I'm 75. Faster time clipped in does not surprise me. Clipped in gives you more power and control. What I found frustrating is finding wide enough shoe for both pedal set ups. Liked 5 Tens but it seems after they were bought by Adidas they went narrow. Lois Garneau is currently my favorite. Nice trail. 🤩
I bought 22" bmx (Subrosa Malum) mostly inspired by your videos and its prolly the best thing i couldve done. Ive ridden it since yesterday and while there surely is more getting used to it, i already feel much more comfortable in air as it feels much more stable like you said. Still have to learn how to land front tire first but damn it feels good, aa it has none of the squirlyness of my 20" bmx. Thanks!
At 64 I am full time clipped in. I like the security of and the biggest plus for me when I went clipless was foot placement. When I rode flats with 5-tens, I always found myself constantly searching for the right spot on the pedal and rarely hit it on the first go. I run X-Track pedals with my favorite and most comfortable Leatt 4.0 shoes
I started watching this vid then I made my backyard downhill run then replaced my Chromag scarab flats to put on the pilots clip pedals... What I noticed the most was my Mavic deemax shoes creaking, but yeah it's been awhile since I was clipped in, might keep em on , but buying new shoes for sure 😂
In my circle of biker friends, the ones riding clip in pedals seem more serious. Every casual ride becomes a competition. Generally I was the lone flat pedal rider. But recently I’ve noticed lots of older guys that were ardent clip in riders have been going back to flats ,and in the majority of cases it’s because old age has caught up and their knees are rooted. It’s uncomfortable for them locked in one place and getting harder to unclip. They used to give me plenty of crap for staying on flats , but now they have silently moved to flats, with no fanfare. I tried clip in pedals but never liked them, uncomfortable shoes, and I just preferred to jump on the bike in any old shoe and go! I’m have no interest in what’s the most efficient way, I just want to ride for as little cost as possible, no complicated pedals and shoes. Ultimately you ride whatever you like most, there’s no right or wrong way.
I have one thing to add. If a rider gets properly fit being clipped in is actually much better on the knees because it makes sure everything is aligned properly.
@@ShadLife I tried everything to like clip in pedals but I couldn’t find the sweet spot for the cleats. Some of us are just never destined to get along with them 😂
I have tried both. Clipped in easy for smooth climbs and flow and descents. But when it gets techy and rock gardens are tight...I lose confidence feeling a prisoner to the bike. And I have fallen over too many times due to not clipping out in time losing balance over techy climbs. So went back to flats. It does depend on the trail which I choose.
I wear Five Ten Aescents on my 29+ rigid steel with Spank Spikes and Shimano SD501s on my 29+ rigid titanium with Crank Bro Candies. The titanium may be 10lbs lighter than the steel, but I feel ithe Candies make it easier to spin the cranks
I wonder how different the results would be if you started with the clips the next day. I seem to be able to ride longer with when using my clips vs not.
Somewhere in the video while riding I mentioned that I felt my legs got less fatigued when using clips. So I agree that you could probably go for longer while clipped in.

Ah...if I find an opportunity I should do a video on how to land on the downsides with the correct angle.

I’ve always used flats. I like how I can change pedal position on long rides etc.

Clipped for me. I like the speed and foot security. Unclipping is second nature to me if i get into trouble. When i crash feet come unclipped

Yeah, I hated Shimano SPDs. In the mid 2000s I had a friend let me try Time pedals and I never went back.
