  • Myself and Phil attempt to make some sense of the bowl of spaghetti that is the railways of Kirkby in Ashfield, in Nottinghamshire.
    Some active, most closed, we look at the Great Central mainline, the Midland mainline, the Lean Valley line, the Robin Hood line, plus colliery branches, mainline spurs and even an 1819 tramway, all rolled up into a small English town.
    *Made some merch for the railway fans like myself. Can check out the shop here - www.redbubble.....

    Amazing videos guys. As a boy I walked down that path at the end of your video, followed the railway off to the left, went down (over?) the 44 steps and into Portalnd Park. We also went there with the scouts. I remember the Dumbles that you could just see in one of the shots in the middle of your video. I was also a bellringer at St. Wilfreds in the background. GREAT memories and keep up this work.

    This channel is absolutely awesome many thanks for your videos particularly of Aroond Kirkby in Ashfield my late grandparents lived not far from summit signal box on Southwell lane I find these videos a nice way of remembering them and the history of Kirkby

    Absolutely brilliant. Like @tracygreen2860, i've been down that cutting, but via the 'tunnel end'.
    My dad taught at the local Ashfield Comp, back in the '60s &'70s, and i still have vague memories of him driving through Kirkby & over the level crossings on the way to the school.
    There ought to be a way such local history could be part of local school's curriculum.
    Thanks, Gareth & Phil. Essential viewing and a superb addition to the likes of Ant & Paul's videos from the same area.

    This is fantastic, I grew up exploring those old lines and still do now at the ripe old age of 53. I'm halfway through watching this vid and where Phil nearly lost his shoe in a bog - yeah that happened to me too when I explored that cutting. Well boggy at that end. There is an easier way down to the cutting rather than the way you did it I appreciate that's no good to you know though. Glad you're okay. .

    If you’re looking for decent old railway walks there’s some good ones around the old Donisthorpe & rawdon colliery area . There was also what was called the Swadlincote loop which ferried trains around the area .

    Very interesting to watch, especially as my daughter and I followed the original course of the Mansfield-Pinxton railway line. We started at Sutton Parkway and ended Very tired at Mansfield Station. Worth doing, but difficult under foot in places.

    Yeah that was confusing, even worse at foot level I bet. Just hate that they infilled cuttings and removed embankments and bridges. I have two rail seats at home, you think half of one is heavy lol I was gonna use them to create a mantle.... no chance, would bring the chimney down 😂
    I suppose you could also cover Sutton in Ashfield, another area you just wouldn't have known had railways running through the centre. I mean a "Station Road" is always a giveaway but confusing when nothing exists to qualify it.

      Sutton is an interesting one and only down the road. Think Kirkby Central to Mansfield Central will be a decent next one.

    There's a pub in Mansfield called the Brown Cow. Next to the car park are the remains of a viaduct that once led a line through Mansfield. It's local to me, viewable on Google maps, and ive often looked and wondered where it went. Be cool to do a feature on it if you had time.

    • @IckeWalks
      @IckeWalks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've seen that before! Confusing because it's not actually on the 1912 map I usually use for comparison. Must have come later. I think it's connected to the Mansfield Colliery but will need to look into it more.

      @@IckeWalks Thats a good spot. Its remains of the overbridge that crossed the road here and ran North East from there, having just left Mansfield Central Staion. So if you looked back the other way to the Grassy raised section, thats where Central station used to be. I might badger Gareth into putting that line on the 'to do' list ! It wont be on the 1912 map. so you will need to look at the 1949-1972 map to see that line as it was a later addition and is in fact this line is in this video at 'New Line Road' towards the end of the film, at Sutton Central Station, then running through the edge of Sutton along the course of the A38 ,under a small tunnel, then crossing Kings Mill into Mansfield before going out and reaching Clipstone Triangle.
