  • After the death of his Son and betrayal by his Brother, Lord Toranaga and his defeated clan move back to Edo for a mourning period. As Toranaga seems bent on surrender, his allies and generals await their fate. Not understanding Toranaga's decision, Blackthorne must now decide who he fights for, the Lord who has turned his back on him or the ambition that brought him to Japan in the first place. See what I have to say about Shogun Episode 8. Was It Good? #shogun #fx #hulu #feudaljapan

The episode and series are shit. Much worse than the 1980's series and infinitely worse than the book. Just poorly written Mariko and Blackthorne.

I appreciate your opinion. I haven’t seen the 1980s series or read the book, but I really like this series. Maybe I’ll think differently if I read the book.

      @@Boblovesmovies I don't think you will. A few thoughts:
      1. The book is a masterpiece. One of the biggest, best-selling novels of all time, and it stands on its own. Of particular note is that the book uses the inner monologues of many characters. This adds a nuance layer which is outstanding. Please take the time to read it. It is worth it.
      2. The original 1980's miniseries is very good and stands on its own as well. It was filmed in a different time and masks the violence of the time because it was shown on broadcast television. The relationship between Mariko and Blackthorne takes center stage as well, and we get a different story focus as a result. A forbidden, taboo relationship, etc.... Still, it is done well, and without spoiling the ending, it has a great effect on the conclusion of the story from a narrative perspective. Love is paramount in the original series - which unless you have a stone heart is hard to complain about!
      3. This modern take is great on its own and has slight changes from the book. I believe that the clear focus in the modern story is Toranaga. This is perhaps ultimately what the book was about as well. This point seems to be lost on some people, but I can understand why. We do not get the wonderful relationship depth (Mariko/Blackthorne) of the original series or the book, but I think this is an issue of time and space. In my heart of hearts, I do wish that they made this series 20 episodes long. The material is there, and I think at this point, we would have all watched. LOL That being said, the acting, cinematography, sound score, effects, etc.... are a clear upgrade from the original TV series, and that is how it should be. I think from a purely intellectual perspective, this modern version is the most honest and realistic about a relationship between Mariko and Blackthorne. I am in internal conflict about whether this is a good thing or not. But it is what it is.
Conclusion: Please watch, read each one. They are well worth your time. That and dream of Shogun which is 20 episodes long. LOL

@@KINGSUNA I appreciate the feedback. I’m definitely interested in reading the book since I think the show is fantastic. Honestly I don’t know if it’s a good adaptation or not but as a show, I think it’s great. Seeing it has definitely made me want to read the book.
