Back in 1993 or 94 my mother and I were driving to Maine from Virginia on vacation, and we made a stop at Boston Harbor, and we took a boat tour.. During the tour A boat we were passing was pointed out to belong to Phil Donahue.. After the tour we were walking back to the car when I spotted the boat and Phil was on the deck.. I walked over and struck up a conservation complimenmting him on the boat and pretending I didn't recognize him from TV. We chatted a couple minutes about the harbor and the nice weather, and then I said I had to go because my mom was waiting and left the dock.. It was my second time meeting a celebrity since I quite literally ran into Eddie Murphy in 1986 when I was 10 years old... And I do mean literally.. So kids never run in an airport you never know who might be helping you off the floor after a collision.. lol
Oh really? Why did Phil Donahue have a boat here in Boston harbor? I dont know if I have ever met, run into, or talked to any celebrity. Not that I care about such things. For awhile I talked online w someone who has a family relationship to a big time celeb. As a kid Aerosmith lived 4 houses up from me for awhile. That was after they first made some money. But I didnt care. A friend who was 2 years older than me went to their house all the time. He was into their music. The Aquinos lived on the next street for awhile. But he went back to Philipines and got assasinated. Later she was President. Actor James Remar lived on next street as a kid. He was older than me, I didnt know him. I think a couple of my older siblings knew him. I had been to Tom Brady's house a few times, and Bob Kraft's (they pretty much lived back to back).. But never met them. I must have met some celeb sometime, but I cant think.
This is why you can’t know if a host or reporter is being honest when speaking in front of cameras. Cause they get in trouble when speaking their mind and the bosses don’t agree. Can’t even believe the apologies given after they spoke their mind and got in trouble for it.
< they get in trouble when speaking their mind and the bosses don’t agree > Thats the way it goes in the media. I once heard a caller to a national-known radio personality say he wanted advice about breaking into the business. The very first thing he said is you gotta have a thick skin then went on to tell how many times he'd been fired.
It has nothing to do with their immediate boss. It’s the corporation that owns the news station. Most of them benefit from war and will only push their corporate agenda. It’s messed up
Donahue was right. I wasn’t on board with the Iraq War. My friends were serving and I didn’t want Anyone to protect oil fields so Big Oil can sell Americans oil. When we were defending people in both world wars, Korea and Vietnam I could easily get behind a campaign. We always used to be the country who helped others. We shouldn’t be the people who use the military to help ourselves.
The first Gulf War was about oil as well as helping the Kuwaitis. I did support that war. The second Gulf War, the one that got Donahue fired, was not about oil. Iraq couldn't sell any due to sanctions. IMO it was about religious prejudice in the wake of 9/11 and frustration that sanctions were taking so long to work. Donahue was right about that one. War is heinously expensive. Saddam Hussein was contained for little to no cost. There was no need for us to go there, particularly when we were already involved in war in Afghanistan. I love my country and would never want to live anywhere else, but we can do some really dumb stuff.
@@crochunter35 If you're comfortable with waging war to protect corporate interests, maybe it's you that should go there. That seems to be the way they roll. Look at their current war for gain.

I haven’t had television for 20 years and without this little presentation I would still not understand references to most of these people. Thanks for this cliff’s notes of our culture.
If people are wondering why Billy Bush is number one, it’s probably because his firing seemed like an overreaction since he merely laughed at the joke; he didn’t actually _make_ the joke. Frankly, I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the people who fired him later voted for Trump.
Billy Bush's firing was one of the most unjust things in my opinion. He laughed nervously to humor Trump, so, he gets FIRED & the PIG'S elected president? Really unfair, if, you're asking me.
Just think-if he had told that helicopter incident as it really happened, he would still be admired today, unless other fabricated stories subsequently came to light. Hard to believe he’d only lie/exaggerate once during his career.
I'm of two minds when it comes to firing people for some behaviors. If it is off set or away from the workplace, and depending on what the offense is, I think giving a pass can be warranted. On set stuff or working with co-workers should always be taken seriously. There does come a time when bad behavior should be forgiven if the person makes amends. A person should be allowed to redeem themselves at some point.
I was somewhat surprised to see Mark Summers on this list. The rest, I don’t really have any huge opinions on. Rush was better at his political radio show than doing any kind of sports thing. That’s I guess just my opinion. But Mark Summers had more of a medical condition. It’s not like they try to do what they do they want to stop but they can’t that’s why it’s called OCD. I have more compassion for him than anything. But of course, I grew up watching double Dare. Well that is when we went to my grandmas house because we didn’t have cable TV.
OCD is a medical condition that is part of the neurodiverse family of conditions that includes ADHD and autism. They are all protected by the ADA, so the fact that he didn’t sue on these grounds is kind of him. I’m glad that he was able to find other work, but he would have had a much bigger career if he was on Hollywood Squares.
@@Trix897 His OCD might have made a good schtick for a show like Hollywood Squares. But I understand that it could have made matters worse if it was handled wrong.
Exactly! They acted like it was 1900. When anyone who had a learning disability or physical disability or had some mental health issues could just be cast aside. Like they didn't matter. I know a few people with Ocd. And it is absolute agony for them. Weather it is having to do something a special number of times, or having to do a curtain activity every time they enter a room, or not being able to leave a room without reciting the pledge of allegence or anything really. I have a friend who has to touch each corner in her apartment before she leaves home. When she is on the phone only at work she looks at the key pad and spell the persons name using the numbers and as she hangs up the phone the cord must be perfectly straight with no tangles. When she first arrives in her office she must take off her outside shoes and make sure they are lined up perfectly on the floor and they must be level (she has shag carpet in het office, she has worn out the carpet next to where she puts her shoes from trying to make them flat and perfectly lined up) I feel bad she feels bad.

You didn’t mention Jimmy ‘The Greek’ Snyder. He was a sports commentator on CBS when he was fired for his remarks about AA athletes. He said, in 1988, that slave owners would “breed” their slaves and that the results could be seen in modern day black athletes.
Luis de Leon _"You didn’t mention Jimmy ‘The Greek’ Snyder..."_ *Jimmy the Greek was a Household name - He was the big TV odds-maker in Vegas.* *I remember there was a lot of controversy about his firing.*
How Megyn Kelly got fired for sharing her childhood experiences and trying to actually have a discussion at a round table event is a mess- apparently tv networks don’t understand the concept of a round table or even a discussion. Why aren’t the production teams of movies like ‘The Great Wall’ or ‘Lone Ranger’ getting the same treatment?! What’s next, clown makeup or Queen Elizabeth white makeup being criticized for its similarity with albino individuals?
She said something along the lines of "what's the problem with wearing blackface if it's for a costume?". That's exactly the problem, being a black person or other minority for a day and then being able to wash away the makeup. It's horribly f*cking gross to wear people as a costume. White people get to wear minorities as a costume but minorities have to live with their skin color forever; systemic racism and all
@@DotHacker99 having to base your costume choices based on your own skin color only encourages the racial divides. I remember in the early 90s having a black classmate portray Benjamin Franklin and a white student portray Cortes in history skits in elementary school. Going heavy with makeup for the blackface effect is not right- but to fire someone for trying to have a discussion at a round table event is taking it too far when actors like Johny Depp and design teams for movies like The Lone Ranger don’t get the same treatment for actually using blackface. Why shouldn’t someone be allowed to wear a suit as a great person like Martin Luther King; a gray wig as Einstein; lederhosen as a Bavarian or Gutenberg; or a sombrero as a South/Latin American hero regardless of their own background or skin color? How did we go from welcoming and embracing cultures to trying to exclude them from being embraced by others of another culture? From the segments that I have seen, she starts by stating what she experienced in her childhood, then asked a QUESTION regarding the ethics of makeup or full-on blackface in costume. That’s point of a round table format, to have a discussion about a topic not regurgitate one perspective.
If a white kid donned a black kids Halloween costume would it be racist? Black kids have figures too, and now Little Mermaid can be black. I don't think she or Al Franken, or Billy Bush should've been fired.

That was trippy to see Matt lauer interviewing bill o Reilly and the both get canned for similar problems.
Who cares what you think. Move to Russia if you're not happy in the U.S.

Matt Lauer interviewing Bill O'Reilly. I suppose at that time to those who knew it was "mum's the word"!
Don’t forget Chris Matthews from MSNBC, and Charlie Rose from CBS This Morning.
I find it ironic that Matt Lauer is interviewing Bill O'Reilly on Bill's firing for sexual conduct.
I laughed and laughed at Paula Dean crying. 🤣🤣
You didn’t mention Jimmy ‘The Greek’ Snyder. He was a sports commentator on CBS when he was fired for his remarks about AA athletes. He said, in 1988, that slave owners would “breed” their slaves and that the results could be seen in modern day black athletes.
Fact. Selective breeding for centuries has that effect. That's what they did it for. Wouldn't breed the weak and sick would you?
He just shouldnt have used the word "breed". Enslaved people are human beings not farm animals.

I’ll be honest, I don’t like Megyn Kelly. That being said, I think what she said was blown a bit out of proportion.
I think that her doubling down before the apology is what got her fired.
I expected to see the guy who laughed at the guy with the high pitched voice on number 1
This was a very interesting video.
This one hit me wrong too. I mean I’m black and I didn’t take any offense to what she said, especially not enough for her to be fired.
