The indicator repeater lamps lamps are factory fit I think. They became compulsory after 1st April 1986.You have to admire where Citroen put them, where no-one could see them except the driver.
Remember that LED bulbs take less current so clean contacts and good earths are even more important than for an incandescent bulb. Fibreglass pencils and DC4 grease are very helpful in this respect.
Congrats Ian and Elly! 🎉 The MOT’s are going very unHubNut lately! What’s an nice thing! Hopefully the winter weather will soon be over so Elly will be on the road again for new adventures!
This video makes me smile… not least because most of the checks you did on Elly were the exact checks I did on Daisy… even down to me not finding my grease gun… and getting an advisory for one kingpin! Penultimate compulsory MoT!
Maybe I'm drawing a long bow here, but I think there's is an infinity between 2CV's and bicycles, in that the 2CV comes across as an evolution of a bike, being just a couple of wheels added and a simple motor. They're both the epitome of raw simplicity and minimalist. And because of that, they are both lots fun to use.
To aid the lights I would have cleaned the contacts up and used either a electrical contact grease or some people use vasaline to protect the contacts from corrosion. Great that Elly is road worthy and ready for summer.
When I was working in the trade I found the issue with the left rear lamp was usually a poor ground in that circuit causing a back feed. This can cause group lighting (where the flash/brake/reverse signal is briefly on all the lamps) slow on/ slow off and dim lamps.
Ahh, this is great news Ian with another MOT pass on Elle. Elle is my personal joint favourite of the fleet with TWC so it's always nice to see them out and about on the road. Thanks for sharing.
I first saw Ellys like in American grafitti. zthen In Germany in the 80s I saw her german cousin up close being worked on. Over years Ive gained great respect for are design that did what was supposed to do.
2CV's always once had inner tubes, certainly with Michelin X's as the sidewalls were too flexible and broke the bead seal, the wheels were not that airtight either. As the N/S/R indicator flashed the rear light dimmed, bad earth.
In the vintage computer realm "Deoxit" is the marvel mystery stuff for corroded connections. Like "unplug, spray with Deoxit, un-and-replug several times, contact problem solved". Dunno if this is valid in the vintage car world also. The old-school approach may work also. Clean mating surfaces with sandpaper or a wire brush, after re-assembly smother with grease or petroleum jelly.
Happy days, choices of 2CV's or Wales. Nothing beats Wales for driving in inclement weather. In my case, that was in an A30 fitted with an A35 engine in the 1960s Swansea.
It's seemingly appropriate that Ellie gets her MOT in this month because as I watched this video, I was able to look up at the wall and spot her on the February page of the Hubnut 2024 calendar...
Judging by the dimming of all lights when the indicators are flashing, I think all of Elly's ground/earth connections need cleaning and re-making, Ian.
In N.S.W Australia when l take my Hilux for its yearly registration inspection or any vehicle l have owned they never check the petrol filler cap also thise side indicator lights they are there because of a legal requirement same as Australia
On my Land Rover I lay my wheels flat and spray Dinitrol cavity wax into the seam and it keeps the rim from rusting. Do it from new and the stay in good condition.
No Pchew??!! I love that you love 2CV's. Personally, having driven one, I think they're dreadful, but I find your infectious enthusiasm for them very entertaining.
I've got narrower tyres on the front of my 205 because it makes it feel like it's got power steering. I recently bought new tyres which had made the steering even lighter.
Years ago I had a Clio with no power steering and my daughter was due to sit her test in it so I put new tyres on the front to make it easier for her. It must have worked as she passed no problem. It was a good car apart from the leaking sunroof which was eventually sealed with silicone.
Reminds me of a joke a Belgian colleague told me, in the '70's. At that time, Luxembourg had few MoT (Luxembourg equivalent) stations and it was common, to pop over the border into Belgium and accepted that a Belgian test was valid in both countries, might even have been cheaper? Owner of vehicle from Luxembourg goes in for a test in Belgium. Tester asks the owner to stand in front of vehicle and tell the tester in the drivers seat if the lights function correctly while the controls are operated. All goes well for the fixed lights, he could probably see them anyway. Then the tester asks the owner to call out as he operates the indicators as the switches are operated. Tester "Are the Indicators functioning?" Owner "Oui, Non, Oui, Non ......" I was told the Belgians don't hold the Luxembourg people in high regard. 😉
Congrats on the MoT pass. "Elly Dee" bulbs are not suitable for indicators unless you either use load resistors to imiatate a filament bulb or fit an LED compatible flasher relay. Warm white LEDs are the best of both worlds if you don't like the cool white bulbs. Technically, LED bulbs are illegal but the MoT man won't be bothered as long as they're working.
Has anyone tried flowing some braze into the rims before getting them painted? Surely that will fill the voids and stop or at least slow down the rotting issue.
I must admit, Ian, that I would have no courage left at all, reviving the cars after months of inactivity, almost knowing there will be issues, time and time again, and knowing as well that fixing them will almost always be a temporary solution. I know it 'goes with the territory', but still: it must be nice to be able to just enjoy (driving) old cars without almost constantly having to solve issues, even if you like tinkering. I mean, I can sometimes almost hear and see your desperation and frustration, through the brave face you're putting on.
Powder coating is by far and away the very worst thing for any metalwork exposed to the road ie , wheels , underbody subframes etc. I know of a few mini restorers who had brand new subframes powder coated prior to fitting , all of which disintegrated inside 3 years . Apparently powder coating is very tough and hard wearing ,but very brittle and when " flexed" it will micro crack and moisture / salt etc will enter via capillary action , and happily rot away in a very short time.
I'm watching the series of videos on the idriveaclassic channel where Steph and Kev are restoring an MGC. He's just had a few parts done and he said he's also going to have the wire wheels treated as well. I take it you don't approve? 😅

Elly out on the road again is line a ray of sunshine☀️👍🏼
Been planning to treat myself to my own 2CV since 2019!
Arafach Nawr. The first Welsh road sign we learned to read. Great to see Ellie being hooned again! Happy days. Thanks Ian.
Everything seemed to go to plan perfectly. How unusual 😜
Amazing Elly the 2CV still going strong cool
Lovely Jubbly Mr HubNut, preparation saved the day so well done Elly.
Fantastic news, congratulations Ian and Elly 🥳
Elly happily singing the song of her aircooled people at the end there, with the added bonus of leaky door seals whistling along too... :P
Congratulations on the MOT pass! I don’t mind the chickens at all; they add local colour.
I just love the willingness of that tiny engine!

3 mot’s passed in a row, excellent stuff. Ely back on the roads. All good
Great work, 3 MOT's sorted on the HN fleet. The icing on the cake will be seeing that Pajero MOT'd and on the road.

Excellent result for Elly on the MOT Test and love a little Hoon in Elly.
Those front wing repeaters look identical to the ones I had on my 1980 Citroen Visa Super.
Really enjoy the tinkering videos
Good job, Ian and Elly! Thanks for the soundtrack; I love it! See you soon -- Martin

Awesome to see Elly again. 😊👍
Wonderful flat twin soundtrack 🤩🤩🤩
I've missed hearing the old girl ❤ SO happy she made it through another MOT. Congratulations Ian 🙂
Ian, wasn't the old cure to put inner tubes in? That's right, if you squeeze a wire hard enough the bits of electricity will stop flowing
It's a good day when Ellly is out to play ❤❤

I think it's really nice that you still obviously enjoy a car that you've owned for over twenty years.
It's very anti-consumerist, and I like that.
Missed that. The others cars are ... well ... "Nice". But there is only one Elly. Thanks for sharing !

Good job getting the 2cv ready for the mot. getting bulbs to work on old cars can be a pain, but you made it work!
Magic, can't wait to see how she goes with the big bore engine!
Good stuff, just approaching MOT season for my fleet. 😊
Elly is a tempermental Lady .She has her own ways .

Galvanized rims? Would last better but likely quite expensive once painted.

That's an idea, though I see some companies now offer galvanised 2CV wheels.

Why dont you put protective conductive cooper greese on the contacts on indicators ?
Because I don't have any...

Can you put tubes in the tyres/rims?
When my Moggy wheels leaked at the rims I put inner tubes in, not sure if that is an option for Elly ?
Bit frowned upon these days.

She does. They're also quite useful on motorways.
Can you use tubes in those rims?
Pack the connector with vaseline or some other form of gel to help prevent water ingress ?
Certainly need to try something.

Could you put inner tubes in Elly's tyres to get around the leaky wheels?
Inner tubes not really legal these days.
Are the indicators on the wings mandatory in the UK? Can't remember to have seen them on german 2CV's... 🤔🤔🤔
They are from 1985 I think. Germany and France didn't until later and so their 2CVs didn't have them. Italy demanded them in the 1970s.
Da iawn Elly!
