Such simplistic engineering, and it works too. What's not to like. I remember some of the old Bond 3 wheelers had passenger hand operated wipers. Not ideal, but, it rained less in those days, says an old pioneer.
The problem is modern hi tech. I had an ancient 2cv with the wipers working off the speedo cable via a knob at the bottom right of the windscreen. Knob out, wipers off, knob in wipers on. The faster you travelled the quicker they went . You could also work them manually with the knob and park them wherever you liked, brilliant! Why keep things simple when you can make them complicated.
One of my fond memories of my 206 was the refusal to localise the wipers. Elly may have had iffy wiper parking, but at least they wiped in the correct direction.
@@HubNut Same as my Renault Scenic. That was a bit of wiper-based tinkering that I did myself a few years ago, replacing the bearing in the mechanism with a kit from eBay, containing a nut and a screw, a drill bit to remove the rivet, and a skateboard bearing.
Had same issue on Vauxhall's.if U remove cover plate from motor,U will find 3 copper fingers.the middle 1 used to lift away from where it should contact.i used to just bend the finger back into position after cleaning the contacts.
Now you remind me I had "fun" with the wiper linkage on my Dyane way back in 1978. I can't even remember if I fixed it adequately.... but yes.. one side going over centre sounds familiar, and at the time very baffling. Good luck fixing it 👍
Good to see another tinkeler messing with wipers and checking -"triangle of doom" Had a Citroen BX 16v gti once. Changed the park-position of the wiper, so it was in front of me, and lower than the other side was. So i had'nt any dribbling over the windscreen in front of me. Problem solved.
I remember the fracas with the wipers locking up that led to the ‘rubber hose safety insert’ being added. Went through two or three wiper mechanisms and rebuilds as I recall. Probably a few years back now…👍🏻
I can't remember back that far, but I changed the parking position on my first 2cv. But on Humpty, my last 2cv (back in the 2000's) I changed my Dash board trim for a single (Rhd) Window de-mister, and bought a Mini Eyeball air vent for the passenger side. It fitted perfect, like it was meant to be. it kept my passenger very toasty. Oh yes, I support the Welsh Farmers!
I remember in the fifties when my father’s Austin16 had vacuum operated wipers which were not the most reliable and I was given the task of twisting the device manually in wet weather. The parked position still seems quite high on CV (?) Thanks for sharing.
That reminds me of a series of videos about Elly's wipers -- before the NZ trip? -- in which you were battling to get a pretty worn out mechanism to work properly. I remember them as being rather excruciating, mostly because the construction was designed in a very price-conscious way, to put it politely. I feared a saga of frustration and suffering, and am so glad it all worked out this time.
You'd have hated the rear wiper on The Hateful Yaris then - that parked at 45 degrees from horizontal, so it reciprocated either side of the "park" position when energised. As I couldn't see any way of adjusting the park position (it's all built into the motor gearbox) it was a trip to the scrapyard and parting with forty quid. I can however say "because French" as the motor was made by Valeo....
With an old Triumph Spitfire, I found that wear in the wiper motor bushes was causing a lot of play in the wipers, causing them to rest very short of their intended travel.
...and no rattling wipers at all. Very satisfying. Good job! Thanks for showing the wiper mechanism; looking inside something is always interesting... See you soon --- Martin 🚗💨🇫🇷
They still park as far left as they did at first, but they don’t wipe as far left as they did. Compare the parked position before and after; it’s the same.
Id sand that wiper mechanism and paint it Halfords high temp satin black enamel, magic stuff and a little tin lasts ages. Discovered it by accident 😊👍🇮🇪
Wipers on modern cars have come a long way in wiper patterns that cover the drivers field of view, except for the triangle of doom and the dribble of death.
My mate has an 08 plate Beetle and his wipers don't park properly either. They're a botch job by the garage. One blade is off an old passat. As the car failed it's MOT on the wipers a few weeks ago. So the mechanic did a botch job so it would pass. But they have a mind of their own.
OCD is a terrible thing as I know to my cost. Those rare occassions when things go well just persuade us that it's OK to have OCD. Fortunately a short memory seems to fade the failures in preference of the triumphs. Ah well. Next job.
@Hubnut; Now that you're familiar with engine swapping, this would be interesting for Elly: th-cam.com/video/JUR7p6TX0FE/w-d-xo.html This one is so nicely done, even still sounds like a 2CV because of the stock gearbox
It wouldn't be a Hubnut episode without some sort of wiper related content.
That's Ian's specialty , like the triangle of doom.
Perhaps we could ask for a special edition--Great Wipers of Automotive History.
Elly being tinkered with brings me joy. Thanks for filming Ian.
Such simplistic engineering, and it works too. What's not to like. I remember some of the old Bond 3 wheelers had passenger hand operated wipers. Not ideal, but, it rained less in those days, says an old pioneer.
No job is complete until you have a proper wipe. Nice one Ian and I'm sure there is one happy Elly.
The problem is modern hi tech.

Wonderful Elly deserves a treat. Over 200,000 miles wow
I needed an Elly fix! The 2CV thrum as the video climax made for a happy ending.
One of my fond memories of my 206 was the refusal to localise the wipers. Elly may have had iffy wiper parking, but at least they wiped in the correct direction.
Even more odd, they developed a funky mechanism on one wiper just for RHD!
@@HubNut Same as my Renault Scenic. That was a bit of wiper-based tinkering that I did myself a few years ago, replacing the bearing in the mechanism with a kit from eBay, containing a nut and a screw, a drill bit to remove the rivet, and a skateboard bearing.
@@HubNut Yes, it was rather odd watching it at work. I assume they didn't want to change the bonnet to suit RHD.

Wiper expert adjusts wipers 😂 Elly distracted you , again. Good job well done Ian
I do enjoy some fettling and tinkering, especially when it includes enthusiastic wiper action, because Hubnut❤.
Now you remind me I had "fun" with the wiper linkage on my Dyane way back in 1978. I can't even remember if I fixed it adequately.... but yes.. one side going over centre sounds familiar, and at the time very baffling. Good luck fixing it 👍
Great fix, it can be a black art to get them slightly adjusted motor wise..Best wishes.
Lovely job. 😊
Nice fix and interesting to see that wiper mechanism 👍
Good to see another tinkeler messing with wipers and checking -"triangle of doom"

This is the sort of job I could do- just about within my sphere of know how and very satisfying to see one’s results once successfully completed 👍👍👍
I remember the fracas with the wipers locking up that led to the ‘rubber hose safety insert’ being added. Went through two or three wiper mechanisms and rebuilds as I recall. Probably a few years back now…👍🏻

The wiper rebuild was actually after that trip. I failed to set them up correctly at the time. Now finally corrected!
I could watch that wiper mechanism for hours. How sad is that 😅

Job well done Ian 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻! I wish you sweet wiper dreamzzzzz 😴 👍🏻👍🏻🆙
Elly is the perfect distraction. The speedo head is doing very well with so many miles on it.
...and no rattling wipers at all. Very satisfying. Good job! Thanks for showing the wiper mechanism; looking inside something is always interesting... See you soon --- Martin 🚗💨🇫🇷
Ah the joy of a classic. Ex Austin healey sprite owner who used to get a wet knee due to the leak coming from the wiper arm holes🙄😂
That was great, thankyou for the explanation.
Clean sweep!
They still park as far left as they did at first, but they don’t wipe as far left as they did. Compare the parked position before and after; it’s the same.
The screen was a bit dry. They park much better now.
Great stuff. I have to say - and I know you’re not a fan, due to huge corners of disappointment - I do like a single wiper.
Nice work Ian 👍
You and your bloody wipers!!!!!!!! Still, well done for adjusting it to your satisfaction.
Good work to sort that out!
Id sand that wiper mechanism and paint it Halfords high temp satin black enamel, magic stuff and a little tin lasts ages. Discovered it by accident 😊👍🇮🇪
Just wondering do you watch seaside Garage, he has just getting an early 2CV van to fix up looks very interesting
Yup! It's gorgeous.
Small successes make you happy.
another great video has always Ian and Carly miss/mrs hubnut and hublets and hubmutt 👍
Wipers on modern cars have come a long way in wiper patterns that cover the drivers field of view, except for the triangle of doom and the dribble of death.
and having products like RainX helps a lot too.
Ian FYO Mathewsons have a Ford Falcon (hearse conversion) coming up for auction. It’s on their TH-cam channel.
I have more of a problem with drivers who don't park properly...
Renault 4 wipers never park tidily either.
Nice job!
Are the wipers now parking higher than before?
No, slightly lower.
So satisfying! A small job made good.
Absolutely brilliant video Ian ❤👍glad you sorted your wipers well done brilliant
Ian, how does the wiper linkage on a Panhard PL17 work. They have the most amazing action.
Not sure. It is majestic.
You can't beat a bit of wiper action
Best episode ever!
ian - you must love the wipers on Betty!
Good pattern, no triangle of doom and variable intermittent! Essential in Wales.
@@HubNutEspecially if you use RainX or similar on the screen.

Wait, wait, you gotta undo what now?
Tiny difference make such a bit improvement, things like that bug me too...
Top fettling, good stuff!
Glad the wipers are in fine fettle. How about her kingpins?
Ah yes. Grease... I find any excuse not to do it. Like wipers..
Very interesting I would be interested to know how the motor always stops in the same position? Such beautifully simple engineering design. Thankyou.
I need to understand that mechanism myself!
Ah never change mate 😂
Triangle of doom & wiper bounce of sadness
Wipers now parked better than any SUV in my local Tesco.
Lovely car!
AY UP MR HUBNUT
A success!
Apart from the weather something went wrong for a change the job it didn’t go
all hub nut or did you edit it out 😂
Aaaaah a hubnutteryesque video of old. Tinkering.
Good old simple mechanics!
Awesome!
Bloody hell Ian. Have you actually fixed something? 😂
Nice 😊
Somehow I'm getting a Deja vu feeling, didn't you do this a few years ago? 🤔
Yes. That's when I didn't get the arm in the right place...
@@HubNutAhhhh, So I'm NOT going insane then! (Phew)
Now make my Volvo's headlight wipers park fully down... 😊
Before watching I guessed that the answer to the question might be #BecauseFrench. 😁
At least 2CV's don't have the complicated switching of P4's that do a half stroke then park off the screen when turned off.
Very true. Odd mechanism that.
You have a mist setting? Posh
Quality tinkering
I remember you doing this before
Yup. This is finally fixing something I didn't quite get right last time...
Electric wipers ? My mate had a 2CV where the wipers were run off the speedo cable. Still at traffic lights, holy hell at fifty mph.
Yup, that was the norm until the 1960s, when they got all new-fangled.
come on looking at Elly's heritage.. ANY parking without damage is a pure bonus... because French
OCD is a terrible thing as I know to my cost. Those rare occassions when things go well just persuade us that it's OK to have OCD. Fortunately a short memory seems to fade the failures in preference of the triumphs. Ah well. Next job.
Because French !
All very 🤓
225,000 miles. Plenty of life left in her then.
All very Wishy-washy,all very predictable. Around here the Wiper is perhaps the least used item in/on a car. They don't contribute much 😮🥺....

I've driven a few. Hilarious.
@@HubNut Nice! 😎
You don't want wiper bounce. No thank you.
Must have been all wiped out after that day of unintentional filming... :P
Why are you doing all that crap just pull the arms off and set them level at the off position
I don't think you understand what was happening.
