  • Wes Craven and Bob Shaye (Founder, New Line Cinema) discuss the origin of A Nightmare on Elm Street on STARZ's "Going to Pieces" horror special.
    --------------
    A Nightmare on Elm Street
    Directed by: Wes Craven
Starring: Robert Englund, Johnny Depp and Heather Langenkamp
Nancy Thompson (Langenkamp) is suffering from violent nightmares about a badly burned man wearing a glove made of knives. She quickly learns that this man -- child murderer Freddy Krueger -- is also terrorizing the dreams of her friends and boyfriend, Glen (Depp). As they begin to die one by one in their sleep, Nancy learns, that years prior, the parents of Elm Street burned Krueger alive -- and now Freddy is back to claim their children's lives as revenge! As the teenagers of Elm Street fight to stay awake, Nancy must save their lives and her own by bringing Freddy out of their dreams and back into the real world to destroy him forever.

One of the smartest and most original directors, and he seemed like such a warm person. Rest in peace, Wes.

To me the scariest thing about the Freddy movies is that in way what happens in the movies can happen to you in real life. When you watch a really scary movie you can always take comfort in knowing its just a movie and will not happen to you in real life but you can have actual nightmares about Freddy he just can't actually kill you so its kind of like Freddy becomes real in a way, I have had Freddy nightmares before and they are always the most terrifying nightmares I ever have.

The horrors of the Vietnam war, the Killing Fields in Cambodia and the fall of Laos to the Communists would give anyone who lived through either nightmares

As a professional in the health care industry this is pretty easy to explain. If you stay awake for days and days you can go into cardiac arrest and die with no health issues BUT sleep deprivation. If you come from refugee camps like these kids did its easy to see how PTSD could keep them awake.

The Nightmare from which you can not wake. I had one like that. As hard as I tried, no matter how many times I tried opening and closing my eyes, I was still in that nightmare, with that face baring down on me...

I have always wanted to see the original newspaper articles that helped Wes Craven come up with a "dream killer" villain. Are they archived ANYWHERE?

I was the exact same way when I was a kid and even still am because when your awake you feel safe because your in control but in the dream world anything can happen, their is so such thing as reality or rationality so your all alone in this whole other dimension where anyone or anything can get you...I'm a grown man now but I still get a little hesitant to go to bed sometimes especially after watching a Freddy movie.

I got to say that when I was a young child I was seriosly too scared to sleep, that's the effect the film got on me. The idea of being attacked at your most vulnerable was what the whole film was about. And that is scary! O_O

The Dab Tsog is the legend behind the Hmong dream killer.
Dab Tsog backwards is Gost Bad, so in English its most likely Bad Gost (Ghost) or in Slavic Bad Visitor. It’s an interesting story/legend.

iam speech less and encouraged by these directors why because there original and real movie producers because even if big type companys turned them down because they said it wasnt going to be a hit were wrong and in the end they gross in so much money and made there own studio now thats what i call true artists

I think it's cool that this was based on the Hmong sleeping death syndrome :)

Great interview!! I just watched scream 4 and was looking for a good Craven speech! I agree with Mindstorm though it doesn't matter. Haven't seen the original Invasion of body snatchers yet but heard a lot about. Don't think it ever involved dreams though. I think Wes is just of the best filmmakers period. But that since he makes films.

@ shadowman 2192 that is so true. I've had very scary dreams about Freddy. It does seem like he is real in a sense. Good thing we don't die our nightmares!!!!

Whats Bob Shaye doing now? I know he left New Line because of Time Warner which was sad but what is he doing currently? Is he still a film producer?

for a couple of years now i have been strongly considering getting rid of all my nightmare on elm street collection until we get what i call the "fascist cuts" of these films on dvd 1-7 x-rated! to hell with the laws. the f13th films can be found in faux directors cut if you look hard enough online for them. since i discovered this i have had a major hate-hardon against wes craven and all the other directors whom made these films minus elm st. 5 dream child which i found online a year or so ago on dvd.
