    None at all, just not enough time to ride. I've been riding for more than 30 yrs, and technology finally caught up to me! This is the right motorcycle for me at the right time, age 65. Love the motorcycle evaluation and the trips you take us on!
    keep them coming as long as you can and as long as they are fun!

      @@TheMissendenFlyer when you wired up your extra lights did you have to connect them on separate channels to get them to switch off when you put the indicator on or is there some cleaver way to use one connection to the ezCan?

  • @2muchgear750
    @2muchgear750 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yep. The EZcan is the business. In addition to lights, I added a powerlet right under the seat of my GS (left hand side.) The factory powerlet is limited to something like 4 amps. Seems a bit low for running things like tire inflators. Thanks for sharing your installs and rides.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I may add one of those, plus a different horn quite appeals....thanks for watching - TMF

    • @chrisredfield3240

      The powerlet is not for running compressors etc . Maybe just sat nav phones very low output mine seems to shut off running most things.

    Hi there TMF... A while back I mentioned about the turn signal cancel turning the lights on/off. Since then I have wired mine in and all works great. On a ride out today, they were not on so to test the theory, I gave the button a long press..... they came on. 😃. I have looked on the website and found this....
    "All lights can be activated or deactivated by holding in the turn signal cancel button for 3s (i.e. toggle on and off)."
    Typical bloke thing.....I should have read the instructions.😂
    Cheers.

    Such a shame I didn't come across this video first! I've been looking for a CanBus interface for my R1200R for weeks now Andy. Ordered from their U.K outlet in Leatherhead Surrey, received 1 day later and installing next week. Nice!

    Oooh I love a good debate over points of law!. Road vehicle lighting regs, Type approval, E markings.... hours of research. But I'll resist because I honestly don't think you'll have any issue whatsoever with how you intend to use them. Interesting to see that Audi have introduced fancy indicator lights, and some cars (and bikes) have 'Turn lights' which just light up at one side at a time, both of which would have been illegal a few years ago. So maybe there is a slight shift towards allowing creativity with lights to improve safety. Not something for my bike, but they do look pretty trick on the GS.
    Nice intro by the way 😉

      Cheers Mars0030 - Smoked helmet visors and small number plates are also illegal but don't actually seem to cause an issue....we'll see :0)

    I literally saw this product a couple days ago and thought it was very cool. If there is one thing I do not like about my GSA is the lighting. Even with the auxiliary lights that come with it.

    Another great video. Starting to wish I had a CAN bus just so I could get flashing lights. Don't forget to tell your insurance about the HexEZcan and the lights though. If the unthinkable did happen the slippery sods wouldn't pay to have them replaced.

    You're not going to turn that into a Lambretta of the 60s are you? Loads of mirrors and lights! As others have said, the horn needs some beefing up. Air horns are usually the first thing that I add. Even on the Goldwing, which let's face it is a sofa on wheels, pedestrians would still wander out in the road in front of me. If you can't see a Wing you really need to get your eyes seen to.
    Excellent vid as usual. Thank you.

    • @busterrabbit
      @busterrabbit 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The whole point is that you can't just wire accessories into the fuse box of a bike or car with a CAN-BUS system, hence the EZ -CAN interface.

    • @garysmythe9545
      @garysmythe9545 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Correct - the fuzeblock (nippy Normans approx £70) provides a component that is directly connected to battery and allows addition of powered accessories avoiding canbus system - but will not offer the same level of operation that TMF has demonstrated here.

    As you say, cool. Interesting what the Gendarmes would say about the white flashers. As you know sounding a horn or flashing your lights only indicates "I am here" and they are not coloured. Saw the product a couple of months ago on TH-cam and was tempted, until I added it all up. I would like the extra lights and an air horn. (Non musical....... hang on a minute, lol Dixie on a GS). Plus the flashing break light. Good vid as usual and will be watching this space.. cheers.

      Thank you Steve....and yes that's why I bought the cheapo lights (to keep the overall cost reasonable)...and as it transpires the "cheapo" lights seem to be excellent quality to me, at least as good as the BMW supplied ones (costing nearly £400!)...

    Hi TMF, I've just fitted an Hex EZcan onto my GSA, I have to be honest I struggled setting it up so that the light went out when operating the indicator, I had it so that it was either both lights went out or neither. I've just sorted it out now though as it should be. Apart from feeding the wiring through the chassis and bodywork it was relatively easy just a bit time consuming to get it right. I might now add a heated seat to feed off it now. Thanks for the idea and guidance eyc.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ...I'm adding a high power horn to mine next - stay tuned! (my heated seat went straight into the loom by the way, didn't use the Hex for that)...

    Going back a while but can you remember if the additional lights you added from Amazon had 2 or 3 wires, as my understanding of the cansmart and hex can system is that it uses the 3rd wire as the dimmer in order to change the brightness of the lights

    Another great video. If only my garage was so clean and well organised. Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance ;) on the subject of the aux and aux-aux lights - I think they are mostly good for being noticed, however I do have another theory which I've experienced myself on the bike / in the car when seeing a bike with aux lights. That is that it can make a bike look like a car but further away, if that makes sense. Sometimes it breaks up the recognisable profile of a motorbike, particularly from dusk onwards. Dunno if anyone else has experienced that..?

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I agree on that regarding the lights - I think that's potentially a good thing - as car drivers are mentally programmed to see other cars and tend not to notice bikes....or are you saying that's bad because of a potential speed differential???

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ...maybe, I'm happy with this set-up though - with my main headlight plus the OEM aux lights, plus these, I don't think I look anything like a car on the approach...but I should be seen at least. The lights don't dazzle as I have them on the lowest brightness setting and have them pointing low (for that purpose)....thanks for watching, all the best - TMF

If you are interested Bedford college run a basic motorcycle maintenance course, it's 6 weeks long and it runs in April and December. I can't bloody see now, cool TMF great vid I want some of those lol. I wouldn't worry too much about the legality, I did a spell of blood biking last year & can confirm that a flashing white light is perfectly legal even without blue light training, albeit in daylight hours only. I would refrain from using them during the hours of darkness, that might draw some unwanted attention. Cheers, Karl.

      k4rloGSer Sorry to be a bit of a loser but a flashing white light, day or night is illegal. If it is a non emergency vehicle every light except the indicators must show a steady light. The only worry is if you get a cop that actually cares.

    • @chops45809
      @chops45809 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I got a section 59 last year for setting my mounted pushbike lights to flash on my GS. I received a visit from a traffic cop who stated that an off duty cop had felt intimidated and so had reported me for the lights. I guess that maybe short bursts are acceptable but would be interested as to where k4rloGSer got that info.I am investing for hopefully the extra bright lighting and life saving short strobes.

    • @k4rlogser165
      @k4rlogser165 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      steve lewis hi Steve, the info came from when I was riding the blood bike, which is not an emergency vehicle albeit they look like a cop bike. They have a white flashing light up front which could be used in daylight hours only. This is allowed without blue light training, however I do appreciate that a normal biker with flashing LED's may attract attention. I personally don't like the hi viz 'Polite' vests, for me that's someone pretending to be a bike cop & could draw the wrong attention. I suppose it's down to personal choice, if you think it's illegal & don't like it, don't fit them. In TMF,s case, I'm sure they will be used sensibly. If your MTB lights are as bright as mine, I'm not surprised you got a pull. Cheers & ride safe 👍

    • @chops45809
      @chops45809 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very Many Thanks for you swift response. I think that motorbikes should be able to run flashing whites like a push bike. From the 2 sets of pushbike lights I fitted www.halfords.com/cycling/bike-lights/bike-lights/rechargeable-bike-light-set (fronts only) whenever I set them to flash, admittedly people moved out of the way, but at a couple of notorious junctions locally no one ever pulled out on me. When set to normal and steady bright people still pull out. At the end of the day we, as motorcyclist, have to do everything we can because car drives do not. I think, like our counterpart cyclists, we should be afforded this safety measure. Emergency vehicles can stick to flashing blues. I wonder how many motorcyclist would buy into that. Oh, by the way, I agree with you regarding the 'Polite' vest. Ride Safe also

    Thank you TMF, another video of yours that has prompted me to buy something you have fitted... a Hex EzCan & exact same lights are on order! One question regarding the wiring setup for these... am I right in saying you had to use two separate outputs from the EzCan for the left & right spots? My thoughts are that if you used only one output, the indicator setting won't work correctly.

    Excellent video TMF really, really useful. I've been toying with the idea of fitting Clearwater LED lights, but not anymore I'm not. I've got 4 extra tail lights on panniers/topbox which make significant difference in terms of cars/lorries stopping well in advance of me. This was direct result of some idiot running in to the back of me few years back.

    Hi TMF, Just purchased one of your t-shirts... I'm sure it'll look better on me than the leggings :-)
    When you purchase your next GS... would you still add on the OEM auxiliary lights? plus add after market lights as you've done?
    Those OEM Aux lights are not cheap!! ...as are all good quality farkles.
    But it appears after market lights have better functionality available when paired with products like the Hex EZCan as you have done.
    Keep up the good work and stay safe!

    I have been looking at this for a while now but have been put off by the statement saying that it is 'awaiting type approval'.... not sure what that means though. Clearly it works on UK/European models. Just to clarify please if you could. Once you have connected the EZcan, all you do is attach the +\- leads from your 'accessories' directly to one of the four leads of the EZcan without any additional relay or fuses?
    Thanks TMF, as always, another excellent and informative production. 🍻

    Wunderbar. I need one for my additional brake lights.....
    Seems silly to have to buy it from the USA when it's a South African product. I don't know why it would need Type Approval for Europe as it's only really a programmable switch. Let's hope Nippy Norman's imports some soon!
    In terms of candidates for extra front lights I would have thought that the GS would be the least deserving of your expanding stable as it already has immense road presence!!TTFN

    Hi TMF, I have a question too and forgive me for my poor English. Did you connect the lights on the red or blue circuit of the hex ez can, both lights on one circuit or one on red, one on blue. It looks like you put the positive wires of the lights together and the negatives as well and connect on one circuit with the included pig tail, right? Thanks.

    I have been looking at the HexExcan for about a month now. I was slightly concerned with the fact that they are not available in this country in term of legality , so I sent a email to the police with a TH-cam link featuring them. They sent back a issue with the flashing of the lights (strobe effect). Also the number of lights on the bike. I was looking also to add it to put some led strips for the brakes as I feel with panniers and topbox the brake light could be more visible.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I have bought an LED strip as an additional brake light strip for the top box - not fitted it yet though. Interesting that the Police have an issue with the number of lights on a bike - that's going to upset a number of mods that ride scooters!!

      TheMissendenFlyer . Here what they said.
      Thank you for contacting Avon and Somerset Constabulary. Having watched the video I see a couple issues with these lights.
      The video shows the lights flashing and the narrator mentions the lights strobing. Please see the following section of the Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989.
      Regulation 13 of the Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989 prohibits the fitting of lamps to vehicles which automatically emit a flashing light, with certain exceptions.
      13(1) Save as provided in paragraph (2), no vehicle shall be fitted with a lamp which automatically emits a flashing light.
      13(2) Paragraph (1) does not apply in respect of -

      (a) a direction indicator;
      (b) a headlamp fitted to an emergency vehicle or a vehicle used for special forces purposes;
      (c) a warning beacon or special warning lamp;
      (d) a lamp or illuminated sign fitted to a vehicle used for police purposes;
      (e) a green warning lamp used as an anti-lock brake indicator;
      (f) lamps forming part of a traffic sign.
      (g) a front position lamp capable of emitting a flashing light (whether or not it is also capable of emitting a steady light) which is fitted to -

      (i) a pedal cycle; or
      (ii) a trailer drawn by, or a sidecar attached to, a pedal cycle;
      and which, if it is a lamp which is required to be fitted pursuant to regulation 18, is capable, when emitting a flashing light, of emitting light to the front of the pedal cycle, trailer or sidecar (as the case maybe) of an intensity of not less than 4 candelas; or
      (h) a rear position lamp capable of emitting a flashing light (whether or not it is also capable of emitting a steady light which is fitted to -

      (i) a pedal cycle; or
      (ii) a trailer drawn by, or a sidecar attached to, a pedal cycle;
      and which, if it is a lamp which is required to be fitted pursuant to regulation 18, is capable, when emitting a flashing light, of emitting light to the rear of the pedal cycle, trailer or sidecar (as the case maybe) of an intensity of not less than 4 candelas.

      Additionally where fitting additional lights are concerned the following section of Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989 should be consulted, see below.
      Part II of Schedule 2 to the Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989 provides the requirements relating to optional front position lamps on vehicles, in addition to the obligatory ones.

      1. In the case of a solo motor bicycle first used on or after 1st April 1991 which is not fitted with any obligatory front position lamp, not more than two may be fitted which must comply with the requirement specified in paragraph 7 of Part I (colour of obligatory front position lamps). Where two are fitted these shall be situated as close together as possible.
      2 In the case of a solo motor bicycle first used on or after 1st April 1991 which is fitted with one obligatory front position lamp, not more than one additional lamp may be fitted which must comply with the requirement specified in paragraph 7 of Part I (colour of obligatory front position lamps), and shall be situated as close as possible to the obligatory front position lamp.
      3 In the case of any other vehicle any number of front position lamps may be fitted and the only requirements prescribed by these Regulations in respect of any which are fitted are those in paragraph 7 and 12(c) of Part I (colour of obligatory front position lamps and other misc requirements).

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for that lot Paul - having read through this lot quickly I don't see anything that would affect the use of the lamps I have fitted - I do consider these to be "a warning beacon or special warning lamp" (ie they only strobe when I hit the horn - a warning device - or specifically flash my headlight three times in the case of being a warning to other vehicles). In any case "Regulation 13 of the Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989 prohibits the fitting of lamps to vehicles which automatically emit a flashing light" - these do not automatically emit a flashing light, they are normally constant, they only flash if I manually trigger them by the methods previously indicated when I wish to emit a warning to other vehicles. All that notwithstanding, I wont be going around strobing at all and sundry and I'd rather be safe on the bike, and be alive to argue the case later. Would be interesting to hear if any traffic police are reading this and have a view?? ...I completely get it would be different if you had blue flashing lights!!!

    Hi, thanks for the video. I know this is 6 years old but have a question. Not holding my breath for a reply :)
    I have a 1250GS. I decided to buy the Motorrad OEM LED Spotlights and install them. (Same type I think that you have and the same position, not on crash/protection bars)
    One of my options is to book the bike into a dealer and have them code the lights to the ECU. (I don't know if this is a simple configuration or new sw rev required.) The other option, I think, is to use this HexEZcan. I was just wondering if you already had your motorrad OEM LED spotlights when you purchased the bike? Many thanks

    Great video again TMF, I have seen those lights on eBay and wondered about them myself, might just have to get some now ha ha. Some folk are on about the flashing white lights/strobing, they are used in conjunction with amber flashers or amber beacons as a form of warning other road users or or advertising your vehicle is there. I used white strobes on my 4x4 escorting farm machinery and the police going past never battered an eye so they are ok, I would be worries if the led had a blue tinge but they are pure white. Have you got any more road trips planned TMF?

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers Chris - and yes, I will be sensible about the strobes, I have no concerns - especially after that comment from the blood biker who assured me it is quite legal - and as you say, blue lights, something different altogether! ...and yes I have a few trips planned this year, think the first one is due March and I'll no doubt be talking the cameras as usual so do stay tuned! All the best - TMF
