Thanks for the video, just had my alternator die out on me and the shop wanted 500 to replace it. I ended up buying one for 160 and replacing it myself. Fairly easy thanks to this video!
Thanks for taking the time to show how to replace the belts. Just knowing where the adjusting bolts and securing bolts are located really helps. Thanks again!
I replaced the alt from the bottom as you said. I saw some other video which mentioned moving stuff from the top which would have been too much work and would have left it to a mechanic. Thanks for your video. You save me about $100 labor.
I felt like ur video was very helpful. U hv to pay attention. Its a reference to put u in the right place. Now if u need to chg the alternator continue in the same direction wit loosening the bolts u pointed out. Dont worry I got it. Done in 2.5 hrs Thx for the upload.
Thanks for posting this!! My alternator belt fell out of my '02 2.0L and this video saved my ass (and about $300) showing me how to install one myself. Thanks again!
This was a huge help. I know my was around an air conditioner. but when it comes to cars im about as good a mechanic as Wile E Coyote. Thanks a lot for posting.
Only problem I ran into was having to cut the rusty exhaust studs to move the pipe off to the side to give enough room to drop the alternator. The elbow is so rusty it needs replacing so the pipe is holding on to it with rebar wire now. Going to need to visit a muffler shop. Anyhow, you did save us a lot of money on the how-to. Thanks for the vid.
Terrystouf: The alternator belt is the inside back one. loosen the 14mm bolt on the back side of the engine and a 13mm? at the adjustment. I believe it a 13mm to adjust the the tension. Side note: After loosening the pivot bolts loosen the adjustment bolts all the way out to get belts off. Thnx for the video.
Thanks! This should save us some time, the wife's car is a 2000 Mazda Protege and the belts need replacing... bit of the occasional squealing and such, so seems they've stretched out since (who knows when) they were put on the car.
Nice! I need to replace my alternator over the next week or so and appreciate your posting this video. It is always nice to get a idea of the challenges around the corner. Thanks again.
as you are laying on your back looking up at the car from underneath i finagled it out toward the drives side near the exhaust J-pipe. rotated it a couple times till i came out. It is a very tight fit. Good Luck!
@255jat if you are replacing the alternator you have to be under the car. It can not be done from the top. If you are changing the belts you do not need to be under the car you can do that from the top. Thanks for watching!
lol just finnished doing this on a 94 wish i would have seen this first that damn holding screw for the adjuster bolt is a pain to get a wrench on. awesome video
Thanks for the video! Just what I needed... Opened my hood and realized my belt is only like half on the pulley... I tried loosening the bottom nut and it actually just snapped instead of loosening.. now I have a threaded rod stuck and I'll have to replace the bolt... Any suggestions on getting the rod out?
I have an issue with coolant leaking right above where the oil pan is, its coming around the main pulley that has both drive belts on it. Is there anything there that would be leaking coolant, or need i search higher up? Thank you.
How did you get the Alt. out?Appears to be no room to drop it out of my 03'.Need to do this job soon.Thought yo were showing how to drop it out unless it's that easy.thanks
Alright, after some work, I replaced the alternator from the TOP!! Just push it through the pipe, you may need to play around it for room. Anyway. Now the problem is: my B terminal cable is also rusted and it came right off from the alternator with nut on it. The B terminal on alternator was burned into carbon(or whatever it was). So I need to figure out a way to clean it out then reattach it to alternator. Just wondering what if my B terminal cable is bad? Like if it melted....
On the bottom Bolt getting it to go through both sides of the alternator. It only goes through one side and it won't go through the other what do you think we're doing wrong
Do you have to move anything out the way to get the Alternator out. I cant same to find a video of the removal of Alternator. You video show the Alternator all ready installed
i understand you changed your bad alternator too, but if i just want to change the belts...do i have to loosen all those botls or can i just do that through the tenioner bolts?
After installing both belts, the alternator belt made a lot of squeeking noise. I checked for groove alignment and tightened everything and the pulleys didn't turn. I loosened everything, adjusted tensioner and they still won't turn. It sounds like it is trying but isn't. What is going on?
im trying to replace both my belts. the alternator and power steering belts. now to loosen the alternator i do need to get under the car right? to unscrew the bolt underneath?
I am wondering how did you actually take the thing out of the car? I am trying to do it from the bottom but I don't think it will come out without removing other parts. Any suggestion? Thanks
I need to see how to do the second alternater belt but I have no Idea how to loosen and remove belt may car has 2 belts like this one I am confused any help?
The video shows the two belts but I need to know which one is the alternator belt so I can spray something to stop the squeal. Ever since the original belt broke I have had three new belts, including a Mazda dealer, and had them tightened by several mechanics and it still squeals soon after. I give up. So I'm trying the spray. I'm elderly woman so I can't do mechanical things anymore.
Just did my 03' 2.0L and there is no way to drop it out the bottom unless the exhaust pipe and large crossmember is removed and axle is in the way.must be different from the 1.8L.Very easy to remove it from the top.I made a video and put it on here of after it was pulled and then replaced.May want to change your title to about being for the 03' since they have the 2.0L
In your description, you say you are going to show how to replace the alternator And belts, but your video only shows how to replace the belts. This was not helpful to me at all. Please post the video of how you replaced the alternator as it is nearly impossible.
10 years old and just as useful as the day you posted it. Thanks for the help!
Thanks for the video, just had my alternator die out on me and the shop wanted 500 to replace it. I ended up buying one for 160 and replacing it myself. Fairly easy thanks to this video!
So far the most useful vid I found on fixing my belts. Sadly I don't have a jack so the bottom bolt on the alternator ain't going anywhere x..X
Thanks for taking the time to show how to replace the belts. Just knowing where the adjusting bolts and securing bolts are located really helps. Thanks again!
the second belt broke off like 30 mins ago on my way home. wish me luck. thanks for video! lol
I replaced the alt from the bottom as you said. I saw some other video which mentioned moving stuff from the top which would have been too much work and would have left it to a mechanic. Thanks for your video. You save me about $100 labor.
I finally understood by taking 4 minutes to study this. Instead of using 4 hours of my life figuring out wheres the 2nd belt
Glad it helped you out!

This is correct. You MUST loosen bolt ALL the way as I was getting pretty pissed off trying to get new belt on and couldn't figure out why.
I just saw your reply to Francois Kleynhans which means I should be able to do it myself. Thanks for the video.
Thanks! This should save us some time, the wife's car is a 2000 Mazda Protege and the belts need replacing... bit of the occasional squealing and such, so seems they've stretched out since (who knows when) they were put on the car.
