@@makotoxchihiroyaoifangirl8409 you're right. I was talking about kitchen table, but didn't clarify. If a few more good green cards come out, I might make a reaper king or morophon commander deck with arcane adaption
Just my 2 cents but I am pretty sure that the reason that Snakes and Serpents in Magic aren't the same and will likely never be errata'd to be the same like Hound/Dog is that they are specifically using "serpent" in the sense of "sea serpent" because they didn't want to make a two word creature type in "Sea Serpent". Correct me if I'm wrong but I am pretty sure there are no cards in Magic with the Serpent subtype that are just a snake, they are all huge sea beasts.
Anyone else feel like serpents and snakes won't get that same kind of errata though? Mostly because ( at least to my knowledge) when a card is a serpent its usually in reference to being a sea serpent, where as snakes are just snakes. So I feel like there is a difference in how wizards perceives the two types compared to previous erratas
Serpents in mtg are remnants of the side that lost the dragon interplanar war. The serpents and wurms lost their wings and limbs with only a exception having flying again. Naga are a race like vedalkin so they most likely wont have an errata just yet for serpent. i would be fine with that since that just means more are usable with ulas temple.
i made this with opposittion and willbreaker not only tap their creatures. also gain control of them. arcane adptation and scute swarm for a loooot of serpent tokens. murkfiend liege makes it 4/4 and sage¨s row denizen can mill two cards on every upkeep. and the gold pig for sure is wordslayer an pharia¨'s shield.
I still like Aesi better for lore. Largest serpent, the seas belong to them and meant to be massive and oldest creature of the seas. Needing to have tributes or leave their domain to sleep on the floor. But I love the card for the norse mythology reference with indestructible and is meant to be massive controlling things
Pretty sure that MTG's Serpents are Mythological sea serpents and snakes are supposed to be your garden variety snakes and snake-like humanoids, so that errata hope seems REALLY farfetchd
In the credits at 10:26 . As of this posting, my lowest TCGPlayer market price is currently $3.06 for my Duel Decks: Venser vs Koth printing. Don't forget that I can fetch Snow basics!
So, I made a Kraken tribal deck based around Brinelin and Kodama of the East. It was really strong because I could very quickly cheese big creatures onto the board before my opponents had finished ramping. This card would be an excellent addition to that deck, or even a better commander depending on how I want to adjust it.
Funny thing about snakes and serpents: snakes were translated to "serpent" in french and english "serpent" got translated to "great serpent". For example, from the gatherer, Orochi Hatchery says "Mettez en jeu un jeton de créature 1/1 verte Serpent pour chaque marqueur « charge » sur le Couvoir orochi." But Aesi type is "grand serpent".
Sea Serpent should cost 1uu, be 6/3 against blue, and 3/6 against other colours. What decks want defensive against blue and aggressive against other colours?
I was already enamored with this set, and it’s presentation, but I think my favorite thing by far, is the fact that it’s made Mitch bring up doubling season twice so far!!!!also I want this guy to hang out with nadir kraken, and just make body parts enmasse
Commander idea: Kezzik, the Inflictor 3BB (5) 4/5 Zombie Wizard Partner At the beginning of each players end step, each player loses life equal to the amount of life the player to their left lost this turn.
In French, they used to translate both the "snake" and "serpent" types as "serpent". But in the last few years they have started translating "serpent" as "grand serpent" (= big serpent). So yeah, it's a mess! But I don't think they will errata them to have only one type because they are pretty different in terms of flavor.
I would want to build this deck around commander damage because you can easily use Koma's ability to sac a serpent to tap an opponents creature so it can't block or use its activated abilities.
At first, I said to myself "Eventually a fair Simic Commander"... then I read the "EACH upkeep". *sighs* Okay okay, I admit, it's much less powerful than what Simic usually gets and its theme make it interesting. That's a good point.
My turn: Play my commmander for 7 mana - Koma, Cosmos Serpent My opponents upkeep: I make a 3/3 serpent and my opponent immediately Swords to Plowshares it. Now if I want to cast it then it costs 9 mana. High cost commanders are almost never worth it. They are never able to stick around and the rest of the table sees you as a huge threat. Also with the way the power level is going in the game, newer cards like Ravenform are even able to get rid of this stuff.
This card looks amazing!! Although I will say I’m disappointed that it’s not mono blue because I was hoping to run it in my Thassa God of the sea monsters deck. 😞
I just cant decide on putting it into the 99 of my slumbering isle sea creatures deck or making it the commander of said deck just cause of how annoying it is to deal with.
this in combination with a card that get rid of the hand limit and a monster like hero's bane you could technically have every token clone them and make them all 64/64 in three turns...
I have a Snakes and Nagas tribal deck, and yeah, it's really annoying that Snakes/Nagas/Serpents are all separate tribes, despite all being snakes. Kind of like how Warriors and Soldiers are separate, and have lords that buff them separately, despite being essentially the same in how they're represented.
Serpents are awful. This card is amazing. If they included snakes this deck would be a blast to play as tribal. I'm actually thinking of building this as a pure control deck and just using anthem spells and this cards natural beef to finish games
I’m going to be honest, I’m pretty disappointed with the card. If It were just a normal card it’d be pretty solid, but I don’t feel it captures the essence of a massive serpent that circles the earth.
Honestly the fact that it can't be countered (reference to the inevitable ragnarok ofc) and the other effects are really flavorful imo ==> sacrifice a serpent to shut off a creature (like venom) or to get indestructible. We need to keep in mind that this is also designed for standard
You just had to bring up the Snake tribal problem. Wizards now has three tribes, Serpents, Snakes and Naga that are effectively all snakes, share the tribal color identity and yet refuse to just merge the bloody tribes. Also Koma is a Serpent but Xyris is a Snake Leviathan? Fuck-the-what?! >:/

Am I a terrible person for seeing this commander’s potential for a stax deck? This seems fun like my omnath locus of rage but by the time you get 7 mana to play your commander you are very far behind even worse if others are playing 2 or 3 drop commanders like my playgroup

Generally yes, Cryptic Serpent is the only snakelike one that comes to mind.
A Serpent in MtG is a sea serpent. A water based wurm/dragon like creature. Not a venemous snake.
Every upkeep? Duuuude.
Edit: Paradox haze, anyone?
Paradox haze only gives you one extra serpent each turn cycle, it becomes useful if with other "your upkeep" sinergies
