Makes me rethink that scene with Maester Aemon and Jon Snow were talking about... brothers who had the opposite duty that they did. "Who are you? You're Aemon Targaryan!"
"I am a Maester of the Citadel, bound in service to the Nights Watch. I will not tell you to go or stay... You must choose, as I did. And live with it for the rest of your days."

Especially when we consider that GRRM's original trilogy series had the final book being "Arms of the Kraken". Makes sense that Euron is the personification of the Grey King reborn against Garth through Bran. Euron being especially dangerous as someone who was "recruited" by the three-eyed crow himself, and may have ideas on how the soul of Garth may look to restore Planetos.

  • @0bskureference
    @0bskureference 3 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

I think Bloodraven is the most obvious parallel for the Grey King/ Garth legend as well as the Blood betrayal myth. He’s whispered to be the real ruler, he literally kills his brother, he has a form of magical longevity but has a corpse like appearance. Interesting of note, he technically fits the garth description in a metaphorical sense, as green hair and skin refer to him being physically part of a tree. Though to be honest, there’s nothing to suggest that he was beloved by the people but I could draw something of a line between his word being law and him killing off certain lines of the Targaryens/Blackfyres with making wombs quicken (forcing certain unions that would produce certain progeny). Admittedly it’s a reach. But I think you have some very interesting things here, especially with the purpose of the Three-Eyed Crow.

In last weeks HoTD episode Rhaenyra drops a very poetic line when she's fighting with Daemon, she says "to indulge the darkness you keep sheathed within you like a blade" and the first thought in my head was about the GoT scene of the dragon glass being shoved into the chest of the Night King! A piece of "darkness" sheathed within like a blade...dunno if it means anything, but it's such a poetic line that it sounds like a line written by GRRM himself, not just a tv show! I know that the Night King isn't cannon or the creation of him, but it just made my brain tickle when she said that line! Another great video Amanda ❤ Thank you

Biggest issue I have with this is that crows and ravens are pretty distinct in ASOIAF (not like in the TV show). The ravens are associated with nature, tCotF, Bloodraven, Weirwoods, etc.
While crows are associated with death, duplicity, the Ironborn/Euron Crow's Eye and the Night's Watch. Martin named it The Three-Eyed Crow for a reason. Not the Three-Eyed Raven like in the show, which obviously had a lot of stuff cut out.
Maybe Garth /is/ just the Three-Eyed Crow in the books, but I feel like this would go against everything the crows represent, and the difference still feels significant. To me, the crow feels more Grey King-ish, and there is no Three-Eyed Raven in the books.

Great video as usual Amanda. As I have said previously i do believe you are one of the best detectives in this community with finding the evidence (clues , word-play etc) to back your theories up. In this case in-world and the real world influences of GRRM. As usual you seem very much on to something here. GRRM does use those motifs quite frequently of kinslaying and / or clash of seemingly equal opposites (people / entities etc). And I have always been curious as to exact reasoning why GRRM has given us an imo disproportionate amount of history , mythos and legend with the Ironborn. Not that they occupy a small part of the narrative / its history but wouldn't assume they would have gotten as much background info (history & mythos) that they actually have (a significant amount / some of the most well developed in this universe). Your theory could very well be part of that reason , with an impactful role in a critical ancient event(s).
The kinslaying is certainly used over and over in the ways you suggest. Other parallel kinslaying stories that fits here is that of the Bloodstone Emperor killing his sister the Amethyst Empress ; which is also an in-universe mythical Long Night causation theory. AA and Nissa Nissa as well which is a very analogous myth (if not a version of the same) ; with the moon cracking detail included also Long Night suggestive. If Bran the Breaker and the book NK are indeed related another seemingly pertinent and related legendary tale and example.
Your video gives ample very convincing evidence. Keep up the great work.

  • @nikharagrawal5808

Recently watched Eldric Stoneskins main theory playlist on your recommendation. Wow! I am beginning to think that either of these two things will happen:
    1. Bran=Garth will fight and defeat Jon=GreyKing=Night'sKing
    2. Bran will skinchange the army of the stone giants and also in some way control the resurrected Jon Snow and through Jon Snow he will kill the Night's King=The Grey King.
Merits of 1: Very clear fratricide.
Merits of 2: Bran is quite rooted in being a Stark. And the whole being-foreshadowed-to-rise-as-stone-warriors thing is also deeply rooted in the origins of House Stark. So, it would make sense for them to be on the same side.
Also: We need the fire/Dany story to also make sense in all of this.
So, perhaps, 2 is more likely.
My thoughts on how the Dany/Maris the Maid character might play with this kinslaying story:
I keep feeling like the Maiden(The Merling Queen of The Grey King archetype from your content) is a mediator of some sort. That she is not neatly fit into the archetype of either fire or water. Which makes sense -- one could characterize the Woman as a more flexible archetype (maiden, mother, crone journey, having your birth family's name as well as your husband's family's name) than the Man.
Then we have the female characters choosing between or being involved with two male characters, often brothers.
    1. Maris the Maid, over whom Uthor Hightower and Argoth Stoneskin fought.
    2. Melissandre with Stannis and Jon?
    3. The woodswitch with whom the brothers Herndon and Harlon the Hunter both slept.
    4. Catelyn Tully (If Ned is a Grey King type figure and she is his fish/mermaid wife) was involved with Brandon Stark and Ned Stark -- Brandon is all fertility, loud, Robert-like, Cernunos-type, while Ned "can't laugh". And in this situation, Brandon dies while Ned lives.
There might be/must be more. Wasn't there a guy who was crushing on Ygritte?
Then we have Dany -- who, I was very surprised to discover through yours and LML's videos, actually has a lot of water goddess symbolism too. And her fire symbolism is of course much easier to see.
Catelyn -- fish, but has red hair, kissed by the fire. Comes from the most populous area and a fertile one, and indeed most of her children inherit her features too, but married to a grey, melancholy Lord.
So, I can see Dany being the person who will be our Maris the Maid. Both fire and ice. Perhaps water actually means being both fire and ice. As a side point, this also makes me have more faith in R+L=D theories. (idk if it is simultaneously true with R+L=J or something. I just mean that this view supports Dany as both.)
Though one reason I find this a bad proposal is...I don't want the girl to be a trophy for two feuding brothers.
Or maybe Dany is just destined to marry an ice type figure while being born in a fire type family.
Ideas on how Euron, a direct Grey King descendant might play along with this:
Well it could be a third option: Bran vs Euron is the Garth vs Grey King=Night'sKing thing.
    - I can't manage to have this scenario make sense while Eldric Stoneskin's grey kings=Stark kings also makes sense.
    - Maybe this brother-thing is also symbolized by raven vs crow. Very similar, but not exactly the same? Maybe Ravens are sacred to Garth and crows to the Grey King. Perhaps Euron was visited by the Grey King equivalent of Garth's 3-eyed-raven.
-Perhaps Euron will do something to drown a lot of people and make them into stone men like Prince Garin did with his curse, and he will have a grey army this way.
What I still don't know is what to do with the Corpse Queen/Night's Queen.

Martin has said that his favorite books are the books that are meant to be read and reread, the ones where you find new things each time you read it so that each time you pick the same book up, you have a new experience.

I couldn't help thinking during this video of other important kinslayings in the series. The Bloodstone Emperor started his reign by killing his sister, The Amethyst Empress and taking her throne. That plus his other magics may have also assisted in tilting the seasons and bringing about the Others. Aegon II, whether you agree with it or not, declared himself King after Viserys died. Viserys had named Aegon II's sister Rhaenyra to be heir after his death. Not only that, HINT OF SPOILERS, some of us know what Aegon II does to "secure" his throne before he, himself, is uh put to rest shall we say.

Very Good Video, and let’s spin this idea further that also means that Daenerys and Tyrion are also cursed. Tyrion by killing his Father, Daenerys for … either the death of her Son, as Ygritte says the Gods also curse those who unknowingly kill their kin, or her Brother Viserys. That would end in a very interesting dynamic between these 2 and Westeros as a whole. I wonder if GRRM will play with that dynamic. Anyway, I doubt Tyrions Ending will be the same as it was in the show.

Another absolutely phenominal video from The Disputed Lands! Jam-packed full of absolutely phenomenal content!
My only personal head-canon disagreement is that I believe the rivalry between Garth Green and his brother the Grey King is another case of "history rhyming but not repeating itself" as opposed to being the same rivalry between The Night's King & Azor Ahai / The Last Hero, which I believe came later in the timeline.
My understanding is that The Bloodstone Emperor (who was the real Azor Ahai) led The Great Empire Of The Dawn into Westeros (after the era of Garth and Grey King); he eventually settled at The Nightfort and then fell in love with The Night's Queen. The pair of them sacrificed their babies (except the one that escaped) to The Others. After the final battle that ended the Long Knight, they ended up forever trapped within the Weirwood Net, just like Garth and Grey King before them.

Apologies in advance for the long comment. But after a rewatch of your vid (which i often do with your content) I thought of another piece of very pertinent evidence that ties into the vid.
Your mention of the Greyirons and their sigil / being potentially Grey King 's original look / form got me thinking about other Ironborn Houses. And House Goodbrother came to mind and to me facets about them really play into this theory. They literally claim descent from the Grey King's brother unlike pretty much all the other Ironborn great Houses who claim direct Grey King lineage. So already a direct Grey King's brother mention with that House. Also, a curious characteristic we associate with the Goodbrothers is they wear goat-hair sashes which is typically a fertility & vitality symbol. Thats more Garth echoes (the fertility & vitality aspects) and to avoid being overly vulgar believe it was in a Theon chapter (believe in ACoK) where was said certain members of the House (indicated by them wearing the sashes) are frequent visitors to sex workers so lusty / sexual Garth echoes with them as well.
Also , the Goodbrothers seat is quite inland and far from the sea and said some who live work there could go their whole lives not even going to or viewing the sea and they seem generally more land focused than typical Ironborn (believe heavily into mining even). So almost anti-sea Ironborn , could be construed as more land / trees associated / perhaps even Garth worship and another potential Garth echo. Perhaps their culture / customs are a remnant of pre-Hammer of the Waters more land-centric culture of the region. And their sigil is a warhorn , which could be suggestive or at least partly symbolic of the strife / enmity / conflict between the legendary figure they claim descent from (likely Garth) and his brother the Grey King.
And overall , all the Garth echoes and symbolism with that House to me further suggestive that Garth is indeed the Grey King's brother as your vid suggests.

    • @TheDisputedLands
      @TheDisputedLands  2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

You hit it on the nose my friend! The Goodbrothers are the remnants of the "good" brother! I have a more in depth video that is really old where I discuss the two figures and go more into detail and I definitely hit on these things. Its an hour land and without predictions. I think it was the second vid I ever did on this channel, but the signs are EVERYWHERE once you know what you are looking for!

    • @AndrewK23777
      @AndrewK23777 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

@@TheDisputedLands indeed House Goodbrother , descend from the "good"-brother and likely a remnant of that good-brother pre-HotW culture of the region , seemingly more Garth / more land centric. Even "leal" the word used to describe the Grey King's brother they claim descent from , one meaning believe is loyal and honorable. The overall symbolism and echoes between that House (Goodbrother) and Garth are just staggering.
You being the preeminent Ironborn scholar in the community I of course knew you were well aware of the symbolism , parallels and echoes there that i mentioned / commented and probably made content about it. I have been watching your content for a number of years and thought i had watched all your vids ; have to double check but I might have missed that specific one. But what I'm interested in is how all this will play out politically. The Night King is defeated for good and how does Bran become king? Aegon/Faegon, Dany, Lannisters, etc won't acede to Bran's authority. What military might or political alliance places him in the throne? Also, is Bran immortal? If not then how does the succession work? Greenseer to Greenseer? I don't know see democracy working in a feudal set up...that's what they tried showing in GoTs finale. You're onto something. Please crack it and tell us cause we're never getting WoW or ADoS.

Ive just been reading myths and fairytales since I was young. My mother was an English major and kept so many books in the house. I had a hard time reading anything that wasn't fantasy related, so I guess I knew my genre from a young age. At a parent teacher conference in middle school my English teacher gave my parents the ultimatum that I would have to read something else or find another teacher. My mother let me switch teachers and told her "Im just glad she's reading". That is my story and Ive been writing theory essays about ASOIAF since 2014. My profession is nursing but I switched to part time recently so that I can make more videos and be less stressed out. Its definitely a creative outlet for me.
As far as how Bran becomes king I think it will be very much like the show, but I everyone will be much more aware of what he is. Most of the infighting had to do with people trying to usurp a throne and squabbling over who is legitimate or who has a better "claim". Bran or rather the man Bran is to become is more of a solution to bring them out of the Long Night and years of war. The author will likely develop this much more cohesively than was done in the show.

I'm sure someone else has made the connection, but by your concept of the vitality of the fisher king reflecting the health of the realm, I think "Bran the Broken" will reflect the health of the Kingdoms at the end of the conflict. Broken. Might make for that bittersweet ending GRRM has foretold. Which shouldn't be surprising if we are looking at a second long night ending the series.

Ever since you (I think it was you!) pointed out that "king" and "priest" can be confused because of how those were intertwined in the old days, it made me think about Bran's kingship. It doesnt seem likely he will be a political king, but rather the priest of Westeros. The Green Man.
Also, what do you think about the part about Bran helping to kill Winter? Perhaps it will be Jon? Not a literal brother, but close enough. And it could be connected to the "Prince Who Was Promised" part.

Congratulations! I ve been waiting for a long long time for new videos on this topic, and it hasn’t disappointed me, that’s for sure :)
I don’t believe the answer for how the battle for the dawn should be won, will be another „kinslaying”, or killing of someone in general, except for maybe a selfsacrifice assumed by Jon, Dany or maybe even Bran.
I think the answer will need to be closer to a reconciliation between the major players, including the Others. Peace, more than anything else and mutual understanding, even between the most diferent from each other kind of sides and people has always been GRRM’s philosophical approach for the ultimate solution to any kind of conflict. That being said I don’t think the others problem will be solved (again?) through a pact. I tend towards a more definitive solution, and that being not their destruction as in the show, but them finally getting their homes back, the weirwoods, as they were probably the spirits of the original greenseers. They need to be finally redeemed and liberated from this kind of limbo existence between death and life, they’ve been condemned to have for the last millennium. I believe their deliverance will also influence the return of the normal cycle of seasons on Planetos.
Now their final fate will depend on how the human characters will act during the long night. Jon and Dany, and all the others that shall follow them, will have to understand the Others and Bran is the only key to this happening.
It gets messier if you ad all the other human characters that will not be willing to understand them this way and I think Euron, is the most irremediable of all, and if he didn’t already represented everything that is greedy, evil and corrupt about humans, he for sure he surely would m, after he will be transformed into the new Night s King and be possessed by Azor Ahai. I’m not sure yet how he will really manage to bring the long night this time. I know he would do a lot sacrifices in Oldtown, maybe using the horn of winter or the dragon binder, but I’m not sure what he will have to do to bring the meteorite into hitting the moon and then it’s pieces the earth, maybe also the wall. He already killed his brother and has a lot of terrible achievements. What he could do worse than what he already did? I like to know your opinion on this as I think he should echo some kind of kinslaying that also caused the first night. But I don’t know how will this play out and what will happened differently from the rest of kinslayings we already seen happening and didn’t bring the end of the world.

    • @TheDisputedLands

Hi there Stephanism! You are making some very valid and profound points regarding two wrongs not making a right. Though I feel that the Night King's soul was corrupted to the point where bartering for peace would not be on the table. However, if Bran could somehow undo the corruption, then we might be cooking with gas. I dont see this as a revenge killing, but rather more akin to freeing their spirit or giving them "the gift" of death, I think crasters sons and the other unwilling souls used to create them might prefer their release rather than brokering a peace.

I thought that the brothers symbolizing Summer and Winter killing each other and getting resurrected seasonally was the good order of things - it wasn't a final death, it was the changing of the seasons. It's sad but natural, bittersweet:)
What's _wrong and evil_ is either of them staying FOREVER, that's what the WW signify. Winter in itself isn't bad, it's a winter that doesn't end which is an abomination. It's life without death.
You're right that there must be a great "correction" of an ancient wrong, but it cannot be a Summer without end (as much as everyone thinks they want it) - it must be a proper cycle that keeps all elements in harmony.

Great, video but just want to give you a heads up that there is no "Celtic language." There are in fact six distinct living Celtic languages. The are two subgroups, with three of the languages belonging to Goidelic (Gaelic) Celtic and the other three belonging to Brittonic Celtic. The Goidelic languages are: Gaeilge (Irish Gaelic), Gàidhlig (Scots Gaelic), and Gaelg/Gailck (Manx Gaelic). The Brittonic languages are Cymraeg (Welsh), Kernewek/Kernowek (Cornish), and Brezhoneg (Breton).
The language you're referring to in this video is Cymraeg (Welsh).
Since Martin has made references to both British and Irish folklore and mythology, it's important to bear in mind that these are quite different languages and that many if not most words will not be interchangeable so it can be easy to correlate words between the myths that are in fact unconnected. This is especially true for Welsh as it has major contributions directly from Latin.
Anyway, loved the video. Keep it up.

The only thing that makes me doubt of this excellent and well-researched theory is the fact that Garth (as far as I remember, correct me if I'm wrong) is only mentioned in the worldbook, and never in the book series (or if he is, maybe no more than in one or two throwaway lines to give some lore "flavour"). And I do think that most of the important symbolic elements that will play out in the ending will be front and center in the main book series itself. The Grey King IS mentioned in the books, though, mostly in Ironborn chapters. I'm reluctant to think that an obscure deep lore figure only expanded upon in the world book (which is mostly for superfans, let's face it) will be a crucial element in the ending.
But I wish I was wrong! The theory is beautiful, makes sense if the worldbook is taken into account, and is resonanant with things that have been important spiritually in the real world for millennia.

Hey there and thanks for watching and commenting! He's mentioned in the first book and all the appendices. The grave of the first king is in Dance and GRRM believes in show not tell which is why the great empire in never mentioned in the books, yet we see them in Danny's wake the dragon dream, the bloodstone Emperor is never mentioned but we see what Euron is about to become. Honestly most of us couldnt even remember who Euron was before he showed up in Feast and the same goes for Marwyn both who are likely to have significant roles in the plot. Also GRRM believes in the monomyth by giving us clues with different legends and we will likely find out that Garth can be found within other legends beyond the First King.

I fail to see how another kinslaying is the solution. Two wrongs don't make a right.
Would symbolically slaying winter not just cause the same problem to happen in reverse, like endless brutal summers that cause droughts and famines?
