Did it come with that black usb - thunderbolt connection? My time machine backup drive only has a usb connector..... does this come with an adaptor to plug USB end into cord that can plug into new MacBook Pro 14 thunderbolt port?
Great video. I wanted to ask if you feel any vibration while touching the drive whenever it's copying files? I was curious if this was normal or not. Thank you so much.
I’m looking to purchase this hardrive, I have an older MacBook Pro 2010. My goal is to back everything up and move it to a 2019 MacBook. Do you know if it will work and what additional will I need?
Hi, would I need to leave that little orange cover off/open each time I have USB3 cable attached or can it somehow be closed with the wire in??? Thanks in advance
Hi Robert. Thanks for the very informative review. This drive might be perfect for me. I just have one question I was wondering if you wouldn't mind answering for me? I plan on hooking this drive up to my mac with the thunderbolt 2 cable and installing OSX on it to achieve faster speeds than my internal hard drive. My question is, when I do this, could I utilize the USB 3.0 port on the Lacie device to connect an extra 2TB hard drive? I can't see why this wouldn't work but just thought I'd ask you for your opinion to make sure?
wish i would have watched the video prior to setting up my LaCie Rugged but it seems your video assured that I did do it the proper/correct way and with more convenient options in regards to storage format. THANKS of this video :)
Hi Roberts.. i would like to know, is the lacie ruggeds can connect directly to ipad pro 10.5 with a cable?? Because i work a lot with ipad.. thank youu :)
Is there any way that I can limit the volume time machine can take? used to have a 2TB drive and when I used it to back up with time machine, the time machine gradually took up all the space of the 2TB drive.
still relevant in 2020! I have a Mac Book Pro from late 2011 (but with a brand new SSD etc) and I want an external drive. The MBP has thunderbolt 1, Firewire 800!!! and USB 2.0- no USB 3.0! but the laptop is good enough for editing 1080p with FCP X so I want to continue to use when doing short edits on location (a Same day edit at a wedding etc)- so previously I had a Lacie rugged with dual firewire 800 connections and USB 3 but since I don't have USB 3 on the mac I used the firewire and it worked fine...I know the internal drive was 7200RPM...this Lacie Rugged Thunderbolt (2) with USB 3 may be what I need-Can the drive power up from the thunderbolt connection? is the internal drive spinning at 5400RPM or 7200RPM? does it matter for video editing on the go? I can't use any SSD drives as I don't have USB 3 or USB-C...maybe in the future-my main editing computer is an Imac late 2013. I want to get the 2TB version..thanks
Hi there. I purchased this external hard drive a few months ago from amazon ... and it was working well until I accidentally unplugged it without ejecting it properly, thus corrupting some of the files. I decided to reformat it, but sadly I lost the LaCie Setup Assistant file. Is there any way I could get it back? I checked the site, but I couldn't find it.
HI! Bartosz Migas The one I purchased in this vlog is still working fine without any issues. I filled this one up but was very happy with it so I purchased another 2TB one from the Apple store quite recently and it also works just fine. I keep my raw footage for all the vlogs on them and so keep them connected when editing which often takes days so fairly heavy use. They do get warm when in use but not hot. If you have concerns I would read up on the fragility of external hard drives when in use and best practice in terms of storage & use to ensure longevity of your drives - they may be rugged but no drive is beyond being damaged or indestructible.
I have a question! I've just recently purchased one of these for my 2014 macbook in order to store videos and photos from my canon dslr. When I reached the part of setup regarding "Formatting will erase all data currently stored on the desk," I stopped because I'm afraid it will erase all data (including my large music library) from my startup disk. Is there any truth to this?
+Tyro Dont know - I turned off time machine because it used way too much space. But I use it not only to save video, but also for the editing software library location so effectively I edit my videos on the external drive
the rubber comes off and you can open them with a standard philips screwdriver but its probably better to just buy a finished lace or seagate drive than make your own
Found this review extremely helpful, thank you! Is it possible to use this external hard drive for both Time Machine and Storage if you set it up for Mac only? Any tips would be helpful. Thanks!
hola que tal robert muy bueno el video hace poco me compre un lacie ruggen igual a la del video y sera que podes subir el laciestup.app por que perdi la app
+Marcelo Matiello In reality it makes little difference if you use this or most hard drive's connected by thunedrbolt or USB because the connection used dosn't improve read or write speed of the disk. The speed of Thunderbolt compared to USB only matters if the components are capable of utilising the speed and consumer hard drives are not yet that fast.
Hi! +civ1993 It is from the TH-cam free audio library so you can download it for free from the create tab of TH-cam, but I cannot remember what one it was. When I made this there were very few tracks available so finding one was much quicker. If you find it let everyone know and I'll put it in the description.
nice video, grateful for sharing, noticed in the setup its limited to 4gb single file upload, thats going to put a lot of video makers up that shoot high format video. Otherwise its looks nice and the choice of mac or windows partitioning is very clever for people that dont understand partitioning.
Hey! What's the benefit of using the software that it comes with it? You said that if u do decide to use the software, it uses us some data right? It would still work perfectly without using that software right? Also, what's the difference in using the hard drive as time machine and not? Should I have a hard drive specifically just for time machine and then another for random documents? Thanks!!
The answer to all your questions is it depends - basically if your using a MAC laptop or desktop the rugged models are good if you want portability the mains powered Porsche models etc are better value but not portable. just get both you'll fill em up making video in no time
i could see thunderbolt being a good thing on a SSD drive but on a spinning disk i dont think its really going to make it much faster or if at all then usb 3.0 1 hour to do 130gb did you say does seem kind of slow i guess its a 5400rpm drive inside, nice video by the way
ROBERTS LONDON Is it still working for you? I'm thinking of getting one but I've seen people say it's unreliable. I like the look of G-Tech's ATV case.
HI! +Sid Brunski Yes. I have had no issues with the LaCie drives yet and I now have another as I filled the first. I actually use them very heavily also, as I edit my videos on a LaCie drive not my MacBooks drive. All hard drives are fragile and especially when running - so I think people probably get carried away with the "rugged" aspect.
ROBERTS LONDON Yeah I'm thinking of getting this for video editing on my MacBook too, it seems like the go-to drive for video editing on the go. Thanks for the help!

I love how the music almost synced with the Mac boot up sound haha
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video
Hi, What is the difference between the Lacie rugged STFR5000800 5tb model and the STDR5000800 5tb model?
Great video. I wanted to ask if you feel any vibration while touching the drive whenever it's copying files? I was curious if this was normal or not. Thank you so much.

Why didn’t you answer the man’s question? lol
Bot
Is it good for excel, word files and photos?
Are these normally sold at local Apple stores?
I bought this drive today .. I'm worrying about bad reviews on the apple store. Disconnects and heats up if it's true?

HI! Alexander Mathew It will only erase all data on the disk you are formatting not all of your hard drives
Roberts London what does that mean ?
This was useful really helped me decide to buy one!
I am new to mac. Can the drive be set up for time machine as well as for saving video files while out on the road? Thanks!
+Tyro Dont know - I turned off time machine because it used way too much space. But I use it not only to save video, but also for the editing software library location so effectively I edit my videos on the external drive
+ROBERTS LONDON Thanks :)
is it possible to open this to change the HD to a SSD?
the rubber comes off and you can open them with a standard philips screwdriver but its probably better to just buy a finished lace or seagate drive than make your own
it is much cheaper for me to buy this lacie than a standalone ssd. so, you say we can install lacie externals ssd into our laptop ?
i have one do i need to set up an accouunt is it optional or not i am not totally user
no you dont require an account
thank you

All you need to know about Rugged installation is in this excellent How To. Proper job!
Hi! Firebrand55 Thanks! Glad you liked the video.
100gb in 1hr? It should have been faster since it's thunderbolt right?
+Marcelo Matiello In reality it makes little difference if you use this or most hard drive's connected by thunedrbolt or USB because the connection used dosn't improve read or write speed of the disk. does this also connect to an iMac?
yes - it connects to anything you can physically plug it in to
hahahaha
Nice Video it's very helpful
I just got the Porsche 9223 today, it's nice too

Hi! +N.F. K I dont know but maybe someone else does
Thanx a lot Adam Right, I discover it accidentally a few days ago with some one
I appreciate your comment
What is the title of the background music?
Hi! +civ1993 It is from the TH-cam free audio library so you can download it for free from the create tab of TH-cam, but I cannot remember what one it was. I wish you had shown the actual connection. I found out (the hard way) that this requires an extra USB-C cable... ugh.
I also plugged it an and got no response. Very confused...
I did in detail while explaining what they are 1:50 is the USB connection and 2:20 is the thunderbolt connection.
Can I use this on a 2012 mac book pro?
Thanks for watching! Glad you liked the video
Roberts London hahaha
Turtlegawd no way it’s to old 😉

its not the drive it is the device - Pc's have file size limits macs don't
£150 for 1TB, thats the apple store for you, My Apple store recommended the 4TB drive, and where to buy it for under £200 !
Thanks for watching! Glad you liked the video
Helpful. But the music is a distraction.

A version with SSD inside also exist. (LaCie rugged thunderbolt usb) It has TB2 + USB 3.0 and with the SSD inside it should make more sense.
So what was that? 50 pounds more from the apple store?
+Dylan dobay Currently they cost £4.78 more in the Apple store than from Amazon but that does not include Amazon postage or prime costs.
What's the music played for the intro I like it bro
Thanks for commenting! Glad you enjoyed the video
Cost?
+Nick Lane The best place to check for current prices in your currency and location is either Apple.com or Amazon.com
without blackmagic/aja speedtest this is a meager review-- speed is everything
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed the video

Just so happened to be watching this a year after it was uploaded
HI! +Sid Brunski Its still an available product, so still relevant - I wish all consumer electronics lasted over a year, as so would my video reviews.
Could you post a version without the background music ?
AsFewFalseThingsAsPossible No - but it is subtitled so you could watch it with no sound
I noticed Casey Neistat using one of these..... Cool product.
HI! +Ned G-M Thanks! They are very useful, video takes up a lot of space - you can fill up an in built macbook hard drive very quickly.
how much do you paid?
Super helpful! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed the video
