honestly the best F30 is the facelift with the B48 engine, because i own one and the only most expensive repair i had to do was change the belt and vibration dampener for 1500. After that, no issues 136k KM no issues because the B48 is proven to be very reliable compared to N20 which is honestly a bad unreliable motor, FYI B48 is co developed by Toyota which is also used in the Supra 2.0
Oh, the B48 is miles superior. Put it this way, BMW deemed the B48 good enough for the 7 Series, but the N20 went no higher than the 5 Series.
What about b38?
Still owning a pre facelift N 20 F30 .The car is still running superb.
Nice. The N20 is not as desirable as the B48, but is still a decent engine in its own right if well-maintained

Spot on! Yup, b48 easy to maintain, spare parts easy to get even at shopee. The parts price not that huge difference compare to japan's brand except the labour fees are so expensive.
Absolutely great video, love how you went into detail on the f30 generation and especially the 318-328i range. I’ve owned my 2015 320i for just over a year and a half now and it’s given me absolutely no problems what so ever.it is more than enough power In terms of a daily driver. Hard to find videos on my car that aren’t basic dealership reviews so this was very nice. Respect from New York 👍🏽

Gua baru nak jual after 6 years of ownership. Some say the b48 is much reliable but I don’t think so. Maybe I’m the unlucky one. Car been towed twice due to the spare tank connecting pipe burst. Lot of problem here and there too but normally can be settled within the warranty period.

Roof liner caving in as usual 😂. Anyway I would go for the 316i as there's not much difference specs wise and that 1.6T prince engine is very low maintenance. Power wise just do a remap.
This one can fix at Top Cushion Kg Melayu Subang.
LCi models definitely look better especially the real lights. Too bad not many 330i around while the 330e is cheap but scary to buy
One thing's for sure, BMW got the F30's design and proportions spot on. Hence why the facelift was only subtly changed from the pre-facelift model.
Great info and review. You mentioned tuning to increase the horsepower - where/who is recommended? Any common problems after tuning - like messes with the electronics etc?
My friends at DNA Tuning have an excellent track record with regards to engine tuning.
Can consider f20 1series too if space is not a concern. They both share lots of parts.
Yes, F20 can consider also, but selection of engines not as nice la.
what are your thoughts on the 318i's engine reliability compared to the b48 and b58 ?
The only thing I like about the 318i is that the lighter engine gives the car a sharper nose on turn in. Otherwise, you're better off with a 320i everytime.

Completely wrong about the retrofit part. I’m not sure about the F30 but I have had 2 F10s. Almost all the options that you want to retrofit you need to add the wiring and module. For example my first F10 did not have rear view camera…we had to do the wiring and then buy a rear view camera module and the camera itself. For comfort access…there are many antennas and they are all not present in the car except one to enable keyless start. I’m sure F30 would have been similar case. And forget about other options like HUD, lane change warning etc…definitely need lot of wiring and module and coding to be done.
Thank you for excellent review of F30. I am looking for 320d, but worried about maintenance, as it is less 320d in the market. Is there big difference in maintenance between 320d and 320i.
320d gives you significant fuel savings daily. And you don't have to worry about spark plugs and ignition coils. Give my team a buzz at 012-488 0367 if you'd like us to help you scout some units
The external noise is quite intrusive. Looks like i have to live with it. For the 328i, Drive, power transmission good. Suspension, brakes soft. Needs upgrade. Common issues can be settled as long as willing to pay. I rather have the option to pay than not having the option to rectify at all.
That's right. The F30 is not without issues, but almost all are easily solvable.
Am in the market looking for F30 and came across your video, side from the known timing chain issue which can easily be replaced at workshop, is there any things to be taking into consideration when getting a pre-facelift 320i/ 328i?

my family owns a bmw x1, sdrive20i with the b48 and aisin 8 speed gb. thr b48 in this guise is probably the max power i'll ever need for a daily car. its already so quick and brisk!
i do note, however, that it does guzzle fuel. i feel like maybe the b38 powered f30 would be the even better daily driver d/t the better projected fuel efficiency haha
You may be surprised, the fuel economy gains with the B38 may not be significant as the engine is actually worked much harder compared to the B48.

Kon, this is a good review video for those hunting for F30 LCI 320I, btw do you advise buyers to get the car from BMW premium selection which include 360 degree check and 72 point checks? Heard a lot of horror stories that some 2nd hand car dealer are not honest and problematic cars. Thanks.

I feel like going for the F10 would be a wiser choice simply because its bigger and more spacious. Just that compared to F30 interior, it may look a bit outdated in my opinion haha but market price if not mistaken are quite similar depending on the area of the car registered..
Actually yes, F10 is even more worth it.
@@KonWaiLuen f10 is perfect car to go in my pov, interior size comparable to nowadays c segment sedan like my civic fe...f30 is just too tight, perhaps if the agility of lighter body is his main concern then 3series will be the right choice, but then the sturdiness of f10 during high speed cruising is no match so i would recommend the former 5series all day long~

There aren't many F30 on B48 engine, but the B48 engine itself is aplenty in Malaysia. So parts are still abundant

Can use show how to use panuc alarm to locate f30 parking? Is the door and car boot equiped panic alarm? In case people ply open boot or break window glass to open door. Tqvm
I think Malaysia spec F30 did not have alarms.

It’s the regular workshop for my E46 .. you can try visit them and see .. very quick repairing time because they are really master at repairing BMW and good quality works too .. take good car of customer car .. they will clean the engine cover and apply door seal conditioner after doing servicing works .. small gestures but makes a huge difference ..

2014 320d would be the older N47 engine. Still a good powertrain

I was thinking of trying to move on from the W124, W210, W212 that I have to a BMW but not sure which is suitable the F10 and F30. For daily driving and occasional long distance out station drive. F10 or F30?
Coming from three generations of the E-Class, F10 definitely makes more sense. If budget permits, get a 535i, will be a bigger upgrade from your W212.

Hahha.. Try look at the reliability of the 316, bought brand new and after 3 years, falling apart. Oil leak common issue. And the repair bills by autobavaria will easily come up to 15k to 20k plus for repairs. Good luck in recommending to those 2nd buyers, is as good as voluntarily picking up repair bills. If want to own this f30 at this age of the car, highly recommend to standby minimum of 10k for the inpromtu repair bills. If you are not willing/don't have the spare, just go for the yota or honda kind.
The 316i has been reputed to have questionable reliability, which is why I strongly advocate people to go at a minimum for the 320i.

In Malaysia market, no to all the above. All can be retrofitted, but quite costly if you want to go through it.
Summary really there is only 1 important info
- ALWAYS GET THE B48 ENGINE. DO NOT BUY THE PRE FACELIFT N SERIES ENGINE.
The B48 engine is a multifold improvement over the N20. Put it this way, the B48 is good enough for the 7 Series, the N20 was not.

You mean split folding seats? Overseas forums say it can be done, but you will need to have the seat backs, seat cushion, and also the latch mechanism. May need to change rear parcel shelf to accommodate this.

Yes European has the luxury to spec their car as they wish. This is what i learn from watching British car reviews. Just our market just to small to justify for them do the same thing. Does this genaration have the same annoying indicator stalk?
There's also a paperwork issue. You see, the more variations you offer, each different variation you have to submit docket pricing for customs to calculate the duties for the car. All these add to manpower cost which, I assure you, the car manufacturers will pass on to the consumer.
The F30's indicator stalk is the one where you press, it immediately self-centres.
timing chain issues, oil filter gasket leak will cause coolant mix with engine oil destroying the engine, transmission cooler crack will cause coolant to enter gearbox due to cheap plastic components short lifespan. Unless the previous owner has done these items recently, these could cause wallet to explode 😂..Contis are to be bought new and after 5 years let them go..
Good, you pay all the tax for new and I get to buy from you after 5 years at less than half the price 🤣
