Out of the April fools pets, I would have loved to see the Mornato (the donkey guy with long floppy ears and a long tail), the Quaturchin (The fluffy purple sea otter guy with a fish tail), and the Furzurt (Green furry dinosaur looking thing.)
I wish we would have seen more of the April Fool's pets get developed. There were a lot of interesting concepts that could have been fleshed out and made into pets.
Varwolf and Sharkaw, definitely. Those were designs that ran the line between cute and cool well. Gotta disagree with you on some of the designs, though. I rather like the way that the art direction for Neopets came out-- it's nice and consistent, and generally erring towards cute and weird but not too weird. Certainly would be a rather different Neopia if the other designs were chosen.
The Varwolf has gotten a lot of love from my commenters across different sites! It would have made a wildly popular Neopet. There are definitely ways to take weird designs and make them stylistically consistent with the rest of the art (shading, line size, standardized skeleton basics). Technically, I believe they still fall under copyright protections. But whether or not they would pursue them is a different matter. The established virtual pet game, Leopets, uses many of these designs.
When I was little and my brother got me a Neopets account, I didn't really know how to work stuff since I was so young. At the time the only online game I really ever played was Webkinz and a bit of Ruinscape (I didn't like it much since I was a young giro who didn't like hurting things). I remember seeing the Varwolf and clicking on it rapidly and asking my brother why it wouldn't let me get it. I still have that account with the pony thing with the wings and horn, and red version of it (sorry I'm not good with the names). Ah, I can't remember what I put for my birthday so I can't access it unfortunately. I remember why I quit in the first place was because the day after I made my account it was frozen for YEARS.
Ahh I would’ve loved having a caramiller as a pet, not a petpet! So cute! Also I prefer the original gnorbu art, the current art is more expressive but the old art is much softer-looking and cuter!
We got no choice about Tigren and Fly changes, btw. It was just done for "legal reasons" and the original design of the Acara was hot garbage. Look it up, it's ugly. Also the Cerple.. there was once a book called "Cerple Rain".

Honestly this video plus the current “rereleasing UCs” drama makes me feel like Neopets should have its own system like Flight Rising’s “Ancient Breeds.” Like release some new pets even if they can’t wear all the clothes a regular pet can, but you can still use backgrounds and trinkets and stuff, just like a UC. Anyway justice for the Sharkaw and Yumack. They’re good Neopets, brent.
Whenever they fully changed a Neopet by name and illustration, they made all the previous versions update to the new version. For instance, all the Macy Gray pets became Kaus.
the ogrin would actually be okay though if it had more neck floof/a bigger neck and like, maybe had smaller more scattered stripes along with smaller paws. Its a really good concept, just bad execution. To be exact, the skinny neck makes it look skinny overall when combined with all the other loud contrasting design features. Like, I can tell its not a skinny neopet but whenever i look at the neck then everything else I feel like the creature is just frail. Hell, even just fixing the neck and leaving everything else the same would help Ogrins Neopia over with bullying. Have it be like an Eevee's neck floof or what the redesign that pops up when you google ogrin does. Except maybe not cause legal reasons but still. ps theyre like a cross between zebras, giraffes, and lions and i love them for that

Shame the design changed so radically, not that I *hate* the Eyrie or anything, but having at least one big dragon would have been cool. I guess we've got the Skeith but I consider them more of a gargoyle than a dragon really. I looked up the advent calendar animation with him and he was adorable, no idea why they scrapped him. :(
I wish Neopets had actual evolutions like pokemon but maybe optional or something all of which viable in the battledome but with different pros and cons probably dumb but I would love it. So glad polypop(sp?) got redone into the Gelert as he/she was always one of my favs looking like a cool dog fun fact:if i could get a dog in unnatural colors, green blue etcetera i would buy an island and 100 multicolor dogs and that would be my life, might do anyway. I have to disagree in that I really like the Ogrin! It isn't readily identifiable like many Neopets... you can see bits of tiger or zebra, lion, and horse, and even dog, but it really reminds me of an okapi, and I think okapis are really neat, so of course I would like the Ogrin. I thought it interesting that both petsites had interpreted the Quetzal (Which is a birb) to be a snake. (Although, to be fair, the birb looks like a snake) Do you think this is at all linked, or just complete coincidence?
I know this is a very late response and you probably forgot about this comment, but Quetzal comes from the mesoamerican deity Quetzalcoatl, which was a feathered serpent. So, all three of the examples you mentioned (including the bird) probably come from the serpent deity, which would make the interpretations make sense.
