Relegation is 100% the reason English football works as well as it does. The entire English system is a masterclass in maintaining interest with a wider fanbase, and Connor is unusually right in that _every_ sports league needs to implement that system.

Born in the late 90's as a forest fan, all i knew was Championship football and a some league one football, in 2022 I went to the promotion game game at wembley to watch Forest beat Huddersfield 1-0 and see us get back into the prem after 23 years. I've always watched the prem, but seeing my team there after only hearing stories of how great they were from my parents and grandparents is another feelings. Football need relegation and promotion, otherwise there is no consequence. Forest are currently 4th in the prem, that is WILD for me, the last two seasons it was a relegation battle (which was also incredible, i hated it but... it's part of the game). America needs to do this if they want football to be popular, but they won't.
4:45 I completely understand where Connor is coming from here, but as someone who has lived in America, and followed American sports my whole life I would have to partially disagree. With the NHL and the NFL (Ice Hockey & American Football respectively) in particular there are measures put in place like a salary cap that makes it so that 1 team with a mega-billionaire owner can't just hoard all the top talent, so scouting and drafting becomes really important, leading to guys who were relative unknowns on the national stage becoming massive successes at the professional level. Especially with the fact that all Leagues except for the NFL have a Draft Lottery that means that the team with the worst record isn't guaranteed the first pick in the draft. And as far as the Cinderella stories, we do still get them. In Baseball, the Chicago Cubs won their first World Series in 108 years in 2016, and the Boston Red Sox won their first World Series in 86 years in 2003. In Hockey, the Florida Panthers spent pretty much the first 20 years of the new millennium as one of the biggest laughing stocks in the league, but are now a juggernaut defending their first championship. And in Football, my Detroit Lions who haven't won a championship since the 1950s, before the Superbowl even existed and were also one of the biggest laughing stocks in the league, are in the process of playing the best stretch of Football I've EVER seen them play in my 26 year lifespan. I will say regarding relegation that it would perhaps curtail some of the apathetic cheap-asses who run some teams into the ground for years because they know they'll make money off their team regardless of on-field product. Tldr; I agree and disagree with Connor about the American sports model. We do have Cinderella stories with our sports, it just comes in different forms.

bro, in Europe there is Financial fair play. Any team violating it results in punishments such as heavy fines, points deduction, relegation and getting banned from participating in future top European competitions such as The Champions League, Europa League . Also, FFP is done by balancing how much they earned previous year by selling players, tv rights etc. and how much that spent in employing their players, coach etc. This helps a club which overperforms with less budget get way more for next season, and underperforming top teams have to lower their spendings. Teams that get relegated or are at the bottom of the league get way less broadcasting money which is the main profitable source of income for those teams. Going down the league makes it harder to come back because the second tier league is also brutal.

There’s both Pros and Cons between Relegation and Franchise. I like the idea of consequences for playing good or bad but at the same time there’s a reason it’s only been the same teams at the top for decades. Whereas in the NBA and NFL we can have teams draft they’re star players and potentially starting winning like Giannis with the Bucks and Jokic on the Nuggets, you don’t have to worry about them getting bought out right away and now these poverty franchises are thrust into the spotlight not stuck at the bottom because they can’t afford to pay their players
Not gonna lie the NBA is kinda stale. All the same teams every year can get kind of boring to watch with almost the same rotation of players besides draft picks. At this point I must have seen Chris Paul at all the NBA teams now.

I have the same weird position as Garnt. I'm a massive (real, American) football fan but I grew up a reader and gamer so the predominant position was "lol sportsball" but that's starting to go away.
There are arguments against relegation in America. Number one is what is the grassroots like and how well organised are they. As European I can only hazard a guess but I imagine grassroots American Football is fairly rare?, Baseball probably more supported? I dunno about basketball it's got no excuse to not have a large grassroots scene America is vast and relatively sparsely populated, logistically a national sport is hard enough with a franchise system, can you imagine trying to organize a European league system that large.
Relegation is 100% the reason English football works as well as it does. The entire English system is a masterclass in maintaining interest with a wider fanbase, and Connor is unusually right in that _every_ sports league needs to implement that system.

I dunno about basketball it's got no excuse to not have a large grassroots scene
America is vast and relatively sparsely populated, logistically a national sport is hard enough with a franchise system, can you imagine trying to organize a European league system that large.
Not really, England is way smaller and less populated than the US and they have more than 5 tier league system.
@@emmanuelogunlana877yup and having more than 700+ professional clubs lol
