Script of First Part of Narration:
As you can probably see, I really enjoyed my time in Serbia and was so grateful that I had the chance to experience the beauty of the culture here.
It was definitely a completely different reality than the United States in a lot of different ways.
Really, The only reason it wasn’t complete culture shock is because I watched a good amount of TH-cam vids about the country and read blogs before going..
While in Serbia I spent most of my time in Belgrade, but I also had a chance to see the countryside, which was gorgeous in a typical European fashion, and also spent a day in Novi Sad as well.
Interestingly, I actually liked Novi sSad the best of all the places I visited in Serbia, as it just has such a charming and quaint European feel, and with its distinct architecture, almost feels like it’s right out of a storybook.
And so Next time I am back in Serbia, I will probably split my time equally between Novi Sad and Belgrade,
So as I said, with the remainder of this video, I just wanted to share a few thoughts about Serbian culture, and what makes it so fascinating and unique, and also what makes it so different from American culture.

I visited Serbia in August, 2021 and I couldn’t have described it any better. Everything you said about Serbia is accurate. I have some of the same experiences. The nightlife in Serbia is also amazing. I have made a few friends who also were very helpful. I love Serbia and the Serbian people. When I returned to the USA, I was sad for quite sometime because I missed Serbia. I am definitely looking forward to going back. I told everyone who will listen about Serbia, there culture, their delicious foods. I had a wonderful experience and I would like to retire there in the future. I left a peace of my heart in Serbia. I am so glad that I am still in touch with the amazing friends I met.
I also must add. I am also a black American and I do share the same views as you. I am often criticized by my Black American peers regarding my views and beliefs. I believe we should preserve our history and learn from it, the good, the bad and the ugly. We cannot change nor erase history no matter who we are Orr where we live. It was disgusting what happened with the black life matter movement. All life matters and should be treated with dignity and respect no matter the color or nationality. I believe we all are created by our creator. I do love my country with all of its flaws and hope that one day things with change.

Thanks so much for the kind and incredibly thoughtful comment. I think we have a lot of similarities in our mindset and loved the same things about Serbia and its culture. I totally agree with you that while many aspects of American history are ugly to look at, it is very dangerous and Orwellian to try to erase it, but instead we need to objectively learn from it. For Serbs, Kosovo is the same as Jerusalem for Jews, and the Kosovo battle is the same as the battle of the Alamo for Americans or Texans. @@wftga_official Quite simply, Kosovo is not a member of the UN, nor will it ever be, take a good look at the map of UN members and you will see the real map of Serbia. Kosovo is not a member of the UN since 2/3 of the UN members did not vote for admission. There is no consensus in the Security Council on this issue
Security Council Resolution 1244 is still in force, according to which Kosovo cannot be a state but a territory under UN and KFOR administration as a part of Serbia. If we were to allow the unilateral declaration of independence, who knows how many hundreds of countries there would be in this world from Catalonia, the Basque Country, Corsica, Republika Srpska in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Luhansk and Donetsk republic, etc...

You sir, have hit the nail on the head! I have traveled to Serbia 5 times and was married there 18 years ago. The culture reminds me of American families in the pre 1960's, which were more nuclear. Men went to work, women raised the children, and family was more revered than it is today. I hope you had Burek, and Leskovac grill, etc. as the food is delicious! I have eaten in Belgrade numerous times via my Sister in Law's choice of restaurants, all outstanding food including the liquid nitrogen desert I had. My wife is from Subotica and we have taken excursions to Budapest from this border city to Hungary. The Serbian culture still tops my list of people I enjoy immensely being around. I agree, even after being in the US Southern states, the Serbian folks are top notch and warm! I look forward to returning again when common sense returns and masks on 15 hour flights are eliminated. My family, including my Arkansas Grandparents and Great Grandparents (that had 13 children) I met as a child would be impressed! Family was number one in a Serbian way back then. I recommend Kalamegdan if you want to delve into history, as well as Viminacium outside of Belgrade a ways. The dig was very well done and they were working on un-earthing a Roman Coliseum last I visited. Also, Montenegro has the Monastery of Saint Peter which contains the right hand of John the Baptist which history says has rested there since 1917. Serbia is RICH in culture and history. Highly recommended for a wonderful European vacation!

Dear Johnathan, usually I don't comment so much youtube videos, but I was intrigue with your deep perception of the matter so I have to jump in (the fact that I'm Serbian helps a little bit). Due to my occupation I'm not living in Serbia (unfortunately) but I'm traveling around a world (fortunately :) ) very often visiting the USA so I have my perspective about your fellow countryman as well. My generation grow up on romanticized Hollywood picture of America, (Walt Disney, Jerry Lewis & Dean Martin, western movies, and "honey I'm home" lullabies) so for us was quite a shock when we were proclaimed as a world worst nation from the same Hollywood where our dreams come through. So, after I grow up (both mentally and physically) I started to visit USA regularly I notice the same observation you made, America become so superficial and sorry to mention that so average stupid that it not recognize its own history and such remarkable individuals you also mentioned. And this stupidity is so gigantic proportion that around the world most of other nations think about Americans as a stupidest people ever. Then we have situation that most of people can be surprised when we have so smart and intelligent individual opposite us in conversation coming from the USA (such yourself). I had the same prejudice, before I meet some very nice, smart and intelligent people when i visit your country, and as elsewhere in the world those people a much more quieter that stupid and loud mass of (I'm sorry to have use term humans on them) humans.
I hope that you and millions of other Americans will find a strength to rebuild such a great nation again. Where people are not blinded by Neo-liberal "political correctness" and where you can freely say that all colors matter not only the one. BEST WISHES.

Interestingly, this map was one of the first high resolution maps that came up in search, and I didn't realize there was so much more to the story. Take care

Very interesting perspective. I was born in Serbia but have lived most of my 55 years in the States. My Serbian wife and I look forward to retiring and moving back to Serbia for the many reasons you state(food, culture, lifestyle, cost of living). We love the "cafe lifestyle" that is prevalent in Europe. I love the fact that I can safely live in the city and walk everywhere and won't need a car like I do here in the suburbs. Serbia is great for retired westerners with pensions like us but for the locals it's not so easy(low pay). Serbia has been losing about 50,000 young people per year to immigration and you also mention families, well, the birth rate is one of the lowest in Europe. Serbia last year lost 55,000 people to the birth/death ratio. Appreciate your honest opinion, Thank you!

    • @JonathanChuMD
      @JonathanChuMD  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Thanks so much for the thoughtful comment. I think Serbia is a great place for retirees. I love the rich culture, but I do understand that perhaps the biggest problem is that fewer opportunities compared to places like the US, and it is something that I become more grateful for as I travel more of the world. I didnt realize the official stats about the birthrate, but at least just from my own observations, I'm not sure why I saw so many more families everywhere in Belgrade compared to NYC, Philly, and Chicago - perhaps it is just my anecdotal experience.

    ABSOLUTELY EXCEPTIONAL!
I'm a Canadian Serb who moved to Serbia,
and I ABSOLUTELY ADORE IT for JUST THESE REASONS!
The charming cafés, the socialising, and talking about patriotic topics and fighting for patriotic causes,
the gorgeous, stunning & breathtaking old churches & monasteries with amazing paisages, and mystical beauty
with the churches with age-old frescoes & iconostases, the rich spiritual life & intellectualism & old culture,
folklore and folk costumes which are extremely ornate, the organic foods & wines and whiskeys from plum, fig, pear & apple,
the beautiful greenery, rich forests, beautiful parks, promenades and landscapes, the exquisite old architecture & extreme Serbian hospitality make for a really rich life here that fulfils one, enamours them, and totally satisfies!
It's much healthier on all nivous: physically, psychologically, spiritually & socially!
No need to apologise for your video, Bro/Doc!
    It's EXCEPTIONAL!
You just MISSED ALL the stunning centuries' old churches & monasteries which are a bit further out from Belgrade & Novi Sad!
Those are our 2 most cosmopolitan cities, which are great, but that's the worldly Serbia!
You should honestly do a video that explores spiritual Serbia, which I could really help you with, as I just did a film on
    Discovering Biblical Jordan,
and people told me that THEY never even knew such places exist there, who were born and bred Christian Jordanians
and even from the Bishopric (Bishop of Jordan's Offices)!
