There's a few comments regarding the lack of roasters in certain parts of the world - particularly Central and South America. You're right. We would have loved to have had roasters from there as part of the project, and we did try and get as many people interested in the project as we could - though there's always room for improvement. This project has been a step up in complexity from the previous tasting events we've done, and we've learned a lot of lessons from them. If we can make this event work, then any future coffee collaboration events like it will be trying to solve some of the issues that may have made this project unappealing to roasters - particularly those in producing countries.
Has anyone ever looked into whether coffee trees can be genetically modified to not have caffeine in the beans from the start?
This is a pheonemenal effort and you can't make everyone happy! Thank you for making it so widely available, a happy viewer from the west coast.
Indeed, I was quite sad to see that there were no roasters in South America... I am very excited about the project though!
@@rebekahchalkley3252 I certainly wouldn't consume it. No GMO at my table.
It's also wild that there's no Portland or Seattle options!!
We're one of the roasters - a speciality decaf roastery in the heart of Vienna, Austria ! We simply couldn't miss the decaf event of the century! It’s incredible what James and his team have achieved!
Thank you for being so close to Slovakia I used your services to place my order
I always wanted to start a decaf only roastery. Hat off to you!

As a long time decaf drinker - finally getting the respect and recognition that decaf needs!!!! Truly roasters are giving attention to decaf these days
Mostly decaf drinker here too. And we have James to thank for giving decaf its rightful place at the coffee bar.
As someone that's very much on the fence for giving a try to decaf, due to concerns of flavor. Could you possibly share some of your thoughts on how the flavor experience is compared to non decafinated coffee? Genuinely curious.
And do you feel that there's always an option for decafinated filter/espresso when you go to an specialty roaster?
Otherwise fully agree that decaf is something that should be more available at roasters.
@@beerfish109If you're curious, taste it. It's going to cost you $5 and probably ten minutes of your time to try it for yourself.
@@beerfish109 If the decaffeination is done well, there really isn't any difference at all in terms of coffee flavor compounds. However, it will lack the taste of caffeine. I would describe the taste of caffeine being a somewhat bitter or gritty note, and people can associate that flavor with the psychoactive effective of caffeine that feels pleasurable. If someone has a strong association of caffeine = pleasure, then it might taste worse because it won't taste like you're drinking a psychoactive drug. Otherwise, decaf coffee tastes exactly the same imho, maybe even cleaner and sweeter.
@@chloeagape4853 appreciate the insights, thank you!

Just placed an order. Thanks for your participation
Thanks for being the only USA roaster roasting to a medium/dark level! (although roughly half of the listings didn't list a roast level) I know it lacks the nuance of lighter roasts but we're people too!
Just placed an order! Thank you for participating.
@@elliots4370we know lighter roasts are the trend but we recognize there is still a large want for a more developed roast and are happy to accommodate.

I'm in the same boat. Would love to find a decaf that tastes as good as (or almost as good as) the real deal
@@pimacanyon6208It exists! I've tried literally hundreds and I'd suggest trying the decafs by Wilton Benitez, Los Nogales, Sebastian Ramirez (El Placer), Diego Bermudez, El Vergel or the one by Adrian Lasso and Jhoan Vergara!
I blend a Peets dark roast decaf with Dunkin decaf and I’m pretty happy with the results. Developed a caffeine sensitivity last year after being a life long coffee drinker. Zero intentional caffeine intake but I still drink coffee every day!
@@sottitron thanks. I'm still not a fan of decaf by itself, but I drink it with milk. I'd like to find a decaf I can drink black, but I'm also not a fan of dark roasts. I roast our own beans that I get from Sweet Marias, so I'm hopeful I can land on a variety or blend that works well with a medium to medium-light roast level.
THANK YOU for putting resources in the decaf coffee. As a coffee lover who had to give up regular coffee, this is going to change the world I live in forever. Please continue advertising and exploring the decaf coffee!
This is so awesome ! My coffee-nerding journey started during the pandemic and i've been following James videos ever since. At one point in 2020 I started having random panic attacks because of caffeine (even if I just drank one cup of coffee per day). Since, I've only been drinking decaf and been feeling great. I've always bought delicious decaf from small roasters, but the choice was very limited at that time. Im happy to see that decaf is getting more attention and that there is way more variety nowadays. I've been waiting AGES!!! for James to dive deep into this, and this event and the videos that are coming make me sooo happy. Looking forward to it, thank you James :)
i've been waiting for so long for a decaf episode that I got my anxiety in check and I am now able to drink regular coffee for the last 2 years
and surprise surprise not even a single distributor close to portugal.
For as much as your first comment sounds like a joke, it also sounds extremely plausible lol
As someone who has recently started taking ADHD meds and therefore had to stop having caffeinated drinks, this couldn’t have come at a better time!
I'm in the exact same situation. Great timing!
I personally still drink coffee with my meds but then again I only use them situationally
Super excited. Just ordered three kits from three different roasters. One old and two new companies to me. The logistics of this exercise is huge- I love the community aspect of this.
I was very excited to find Australian decaf companies are involved!
In fact, I actually saw an advert in the wild for their participation in this project. I've just placed my pre-order and I'm very excited!
Holy smokes, honestly even if the coffee set is sold out people should check out some of these roasters. These small local roasters are doing some impressive things and I would have never found them otherwise.
I'm from Russia and I've spent quite a lot of time but eventually I found opportunity to order a kit! I'm very excited and happy to be a part of the project.
Thank you thank you thank you.
In sochi here. Help. Who did you buy from?
I am thrilled to be a part of it! I hope Decaf gets more attention through this, resulting in more selection in your local roastery
oh wow, i had lost hope that the decaf video series would actually happen! yay, they're coming!
This sounds like the most complicated thing that has ever happend in the whole world. Im tired just from listening, and cant wait for the episodes 😍
I’m excited about this project thought I didn’t find out about it until 9 days after the start. Of the many participating roasters in North America, only 1 still had product. Thumbs-up to James for organizing this event.
Just bought two sets from Austria (I'm from Slovakia). I'm very excited about this. I drink only decaf (health condition). THANK YOU for this project!
As a German who is drinking decaf since 4 years I am so super excited ❤ great that you support our local businesses and already looking forward to the videos!
After drinking coffee since I was five years old (52 years) I’ve recently had to give up caffeine so it’s nice to see more roasters give decaf more thought as I can’t imagine not being able to use all my coffee equipment ever again
As someone who can't do much caffeine most days of the week (medical reasons) but loves coffee, decaf is 100% on my radar! Excited for this!
YES!!! I managed to get a kit this time. Love Square Mile decaf, it's absolutely worth the extra cost so glad I've made this one.
I'm seriously mad at the TH-cam Algorithm for not sharing this (or any) Hoffmann videos to me in over two months. I decided to see why I hadn't heard from James in a while, only to discover that there's this huge experience that I've missed 😡 damn TH-cam
I bought from 3 different roasters. 19grams, Revel, and Methodical. Can’t wait to see the wide world of decaf. The decaf sample from Standart was excellent.
As a coffee lover who unfortunately is sensitive to caffeine - and for health reasons has not always been able to tolerate it - I appreciate a good decaf cup of coffee! Excited for this!
Just ordered from Drakka, Bulgary for Greece...I declare ready for another Global Slurp Festival! Fellow Weird Coffee People unite!
I saw this video in bed this morning and ordered the kit before I had my first coffee. We loved the experience with the worlds largest tasting and since then, decaf has become a much larger part of our coffee lives. Thank you for continuing to do such wonderous things in and for the coffee world!
Daddy Hoff, I'm in,...I purchased my set from NYC's Bird and Branch, this should be delightful fun. Thank you and your staff for setting up this incredible project. Cheers, Mate.
So stoked on this! As a coffee lover who’s now caffeine sensitive, identifying and sourcing great decaf options has been a mission of mine for the last few years. Looking forward to following along
THANK YOU.
Typical of the attitude toward decaf, EVEN FROM ROASTERS WHO SHOULD KNOW BETTER, is this:
I went into a local cafe in Vermont which prides itself on brewing responsibly sourced and locally roasted coffee.
They had four airpots on the counter. Three of them had cards on them with long descriptions of the respective brews' names, origins, flavor tones and notes, etc etc. Long florid descriptions of the notes of cocoa, hints of berry, flavor tones of cherry or wood, etc etc.
The fourth airpot's card said: DECAF.
I keep telling people "There is no need to drink sh!t decaf." Unfortunately, it can seem that way because so many roasters don't put any care into their decaf. So we're left with... "decaf."
So... while I don't know if I will be able to participate in the tasting, I appreciate and look forward to the results, but mostly, I hope it will make roasters more conscious of and give more care to their decaf varieties.
I've just purchased my tasting kit, from a local roaster in my state!
Thanks for setting this up, James; I had a lot of fun with the World's Largest Coffee Tasting, and I'm looking forward to all the fun that this will be as well!
As someone who relatively recently had to start on meds that make me super susceptible to caffeine I very much appreciate this!
Excellent!! I did a big decaf tutorial for the company I work for last year, I'm very excited to share this with my team. What a wonderful project!!
Perfect timing as I go through my post-psychosis decaffeinated journey. Thank you 🥹

I'm just so happy this is available and affordable in Canada! Just put my pre-order in, very excited to test these out!
No kidding, I’m gonna talk to my grandfather about trying it out. Super cool that they have a shop in western Canada.
Were you offered a shipping method other than Canada Post? Since they are on strike, some businesses are offering alternate shipping options.
@@DiniMoonstarr There were a couple shipping options listed (I'm eastern Canada so I went through Escape out of Montreal) and one of them is UPS, which from reading some articles online should still be operating, from my understanding.
@@DiniMoonstarr I ordered from escape cafe in Quebec and the shipping was via UPS.
This is excellent timing, I recently bought my first bag of decaf so I can drink more coffee during the day without worrying about my sleep, and I am keen to try a few different styles. Excited for this!
I saw the pinned comment, thank you for caring about that. This is an issue for me for a while. I'm from Costa Rica, and I had an education because my grandparents and parents picked coffee for a living. Everywhere I go, coffee is a huge part. But it's hard to find media outside here covering us, or caring really. We keep hearing about how good our coffee is but then all the providers you hear about online, even from Spanish speaking channels, are not often regional. It's similar to chocolate, you keep hearing about Swiss and Belgian chocolate, but not as much about where thst chocolate came from.
I am going to exaggerate a bit here, but it almost feels like we produce it for pennies, it gets bought cheaply overseas, and then we're forgotten in the coffee culture, yet you keep hearing about "Honduras", "Colombian", "Costa Rican" coffee at Starbucks overseas. You are obviously an expert, and I know absolutely nothing about international coffee logistics, so I am a 100% sure there were reasons. But if ever I was excited for my country to be participant in something internationally, it would be a coffee project haha.
Would've loved to give a kit to my parents. Might look into importing one!
Fascinating project - thank you for organising it! I drink a lot of decaf and tend to favour ethyl-acetate - but this is a great chance to understand the differences in the processes more objectively!
Damn, you really have a fantastic TH-cam channel. Who would have thought coffee stuff could get this amazing and fun. Love from France, can't wait to try this experiment.
As someone who isn’t much of a coffee drinker but wants to get into it, knowing my personality, i’d have to go full into the espresso process. I couldn’t do the generic folgers coffee in a coffee pot. Hearing that there’s a push for more decaf options sounds great. I drink a fair bit of soda and haven’t loved the idea of adding even more caffeine into my daily routine. Hopefully this catches on and more decaf options continue to hit the market. Thanks for pushing for this james!
A hint for fellow Canadians: Rosso coffee roasters in Calgary is on the list and offers a 20% discount when you sign up for their newsletter and use Shop... which will pretty much cover off on shipping. :)
Wish I read this before I ordered hahaha, oh well.
Haha same. Oh well happy to support a local roster.
Yay! This is so exciting! I love coffee but have become extremely caffeine sensitive over the years, and it's rare that I get to experience something like this!
James, The Decaf Project is truly impressive, but Thailand's specialty coffee scene is feeling a bit left out-no packs have made it to our shores! Here’s hoping Thailand gets to join the brew in your next big coffee adventure. We’re percolating with excitement for what’s to come! Good luck!
Thank you for doing such a bold and grand project. What a fun and educational project to engage coffee drinkes world wide.
I'm in Australia and will try to get these tasting packs.
Thanks for years of education so far, and for all the future videos.
Hi James- didn't hear anything in the video or see anything on the website mentioning if you are collecting any data/feedback. As you say, it's a pretty massive experiment unlikely to happen again. Even with the breadth of different roasters and variety in home brewing methods complicating a direct comparison, seeing if there were any general preference trends or taste expeirences would be fascinating!
So Fun!!! Just ordered my kit from Square One coffee in Philadelphia PA (USA). I'm primarily a decaf drinker and always on the lookout for great decafs.

He looks so happy in the thumbnail, good indicator.
Houston. I'm actually thrilled that my coffee town of Houston got two chosen, both excellent. At the expense of San Antonio, Austin and Dallas. The quality of Houston coffee roasters and Houston coffee culture by default, well, it is justified. Years ago, several, now larger roasters started roasting not to a particular color profile but to where there roaster staff felt the best flavor profile occurred, and then stopped the roasting process at that point. It is so weird, all these years later, to realize that there was a point in history where this just wasn't done. It seems so obvious now. But places in Houston like Catalina/Amaya, Greenway, Boomtown, et al, were really right on the dot for the evolution in how we think about coffee and flavor profiles. I know the guys who do the roasting at both places chosen and can confirm that the decision to choose these two is a good one.
For Indonesians, I checked every single location, the most affordable kit (both per gram and by total price including shipping) seems to be Gringo Nordic Coffee Roasters from Europe. None of the available Australia/Taiwan listings seem to ship to Indonesia, unfortunately, although two of them are currently not yet selling the kits.

FINALLY, a deeper conversation on Decaf! I’ve been craving this type of video especially since I drink decaf mixed with caffeine (2-1 or half and half). I have such a hard time finding great decaf and I’m glad to see more chatter around decaf!
For a second my brain though you were talking about mixing decaf with caffeine powder, then my logical sense kicked in and I started laughing out loud.
I mix 2/3 decaf, 1/3 full caf, in a big jar, Gives enough full flavor to the horrible decaf.
@@dæmnKrisI LOL’ed too 😂
Grabbed a kit! Already sold out in many places, so am pretty happy to be able to take part! Also, this map on the project website is a great resource for discovering new roasters!
James, I have been a subscriber for a while now, I am from Brazil and I was never able to participate in one of these events. I even bought a kit in of the first events but it never reached me, just got lost somewhere. I would appreciate if you can come up with options for Brazilians/South Americans in future events (Both South America and Africa, big producers and consumers of coffee, are not part of the project). If you need a list of potential rosters in Brazil, I could point you to some really good ones.
It wouldn't hurt to write some of the really good ones as a reply to this comment, I bet I'm not the only curious one.
To name a few in the biggest Brazilian cities, that I personally know:
Rio de Janeiro: Five Roasters
São Paulo: Um Coffee Co (from the 2023 world barista champion)
Belo Horizonte: Academia do Café
+++ I hope James and the channel team will see this
Used for our resources and excluded from the benefits. Sounds familiar.
We really did want to get wider coverage for this. The way the project worked was that we tried to get as many roasters worldwide interested, then based on their interest levels we allocated (with Caravela) stock to different warehouses and then it was up to them if they bought it or not. We failed to get sufficient interest from places like Central and South America (and a fair few other places too), which is on us. It is definitely top of the list of problems to solve (how to make it more affordable/accessible to more countries) if we do another collaborative project like this again.
Couldn't be more excited to be part of this. Thank you for opening up this huge decaf exploration + conversation.

Have to ask why Africa is not included somehow. We have so many great coffee producing locations - and a very vibrant coffee culture - certainly here in South Africa if not other major African cities. Is it shipping logistics? Lack of interest from Roasters? Would be good to know?
aaaaaaaaa Thank you for shining light on decaf!
It's my main preference, so the more roasters that are inclined to look at more decafs, the more choice we'll all get!
And I'm really interested to see what cups result from the different decaffeination processes. I've ordered a set. And found some new roasters. tysm
Where can I watch the tasting? I ordered the coffee, but for the life of me I can't find any link.

I'm a simple person - I see a Hoffmann coffee tasting video, I buy a tasting kit. It doesn't hurt that as someone who's gotten into decaf for "I can produce my own anxiety thank you very much" reasons, I've been genuinely curious about this exact question. I'm SO stoked.

I had to roder some form halve way across the world just to get some. And i hope it was still in stock. Because it was a bit confusing saying they had 60 still in stock. And at the same time where sold out.
I’m a primary decaf drinker. This is fantastic. I hope to share the experience with my mom, who is also getting into good decaf. Ordered my kit. Thanks for doing this!
Nothing in Mexico is pretty damned dissapointing, Hoff. Especially considering that it's one of the biggest coffee producers in the world.
Nothing from Mexico to Argentina, even FL in the USA, not event Colombia!!!!!!
I wouldn't blame him. If you can't find roasters that partake in it, or other logistical Problem seem to be in place, like customs and such
He can't really force roasters to partake in it.
@@EziooAuditore Mexico city is absolutely full of specialty Roasters that would jump at the opportunity. The idea that there are no Roasters in all of. Mexico or the south American continent is such a stupid idea, that you should be embarrassed.
Literally THIS MORNING I was thinking about how I wish there were better decaf options for those of us who like to nerd out about coffee but don't love the caffeine. This is perfectly timed -- I'm so in! Gonna go buy a kit right this instant.
I bought two sets, one from two different roasters! I am excited to see how the two, priced very alike, roast these same beans. There may be a clear winner for how I like coffee roasted and they may get my business later… if I can break from my favorite. I am bummed that the one who offers a strawberry process coffee is sold out of it! I soooo want to try that!
As someone who has started defaulting to decaf, thankyou very much. Prompting this and showing that decaf has a market hopefully means I will get more then one roast type and can explore coffee again.
I'm super bummed to have missed this! I was interested when James mentioned this idea a few years ago, but I guess I haven't had the time to keep up with the channel recently and just found out this was actually happening 😢
This is awesome! Finally a coffee event I didn't accidentally miss. I managed to get a kit from two participating roasters in Germany. I'm very excited to try it with a friend who's into coffee as much as I am!
Great to see The Decaf Co (Australia) on the list. Bought my first bag from them last month and they were great to deal with and had a really smooth purchasing experience. Coffee tasted great also! :)
