I signed up with Symphonic. They have good service and fast uploads. But I'm not sure it matters which distributor a musician uses because TH-cam and Spotify and other streaming services are not counting my streams. I posted some songs via TH-cam on reddit groups where musicians can promote their music. Reddit showed 1.3k views while TH-cam showed 3 views. There is a scam going on. How are we supposed to know if streaming services are legitimately counting our streams? Who is monitoring this?

I've been with Tunecore for a long time and albums and singles pay for themselves. If your album or single does not sell more than what you pay to distribute, then there is something that you are doing wrong. What I recommend is producing yourself, writing and singing. When you do all of that, you collect 100 percent and then you see the money. But if there are 40 people in your song, you will never see anything. Learn to do more for yourself, be a real independent. Peace and love!

Here’s some value for y’all. With distrokid, if you mark your song with a sample you don’t have cleared as a “cover song”, you won’t get any copyright strikes or threatening emails. That’s as of today, 09/06/21, their policy may change.

And Tunecore just doesn’t give you freedom when it comes to creative direction of how cover art looks, it doesn’t let you change your artists’ stage names & it doesn’t let you stylize their name or song titles to begin with.

I started with CD baby, they are the most comprehensive, one time fee per release of a single or album, and can do as much or little as you like. They are probably the best for a beginner who wants to cover everything but may not have all the knowledge yet. One caveat is their publishing, as it is difficult to do through the of you want to try to place your music with sync licensing. I am switching to Distro kid for some new songs, as I have a lot of songs stuck in “need more work “ file I want to release and the one price for unlimited is appealing. Definitely watch Dorians other vids on the subject and make yourself aware of the differences . Most of them are similar once you add in all the extras, but if you have specific needs some are better than others . Thanks Dorian for all the knowledge, and to the musicians, keep making music and telling your story!

What I wanna know is how the major labels distribute their artists' music digitally? Do they have their own interfaces similar to a TuneCore or Distrokid that we as independents and artists just haven't seen before? Or are they just ripping off artists and using those same distribution sites that we all use? Or do they individually go to each streaming platform and make sure the music is distributed? (I'm guessing that final option would make sense since they have the people and resources to do that.)

Great Video ! Hot Topic... I've tried both Tunecore & Distrokid. I love them both. I roll with Distrokid. Despite all of there upsale fees for added services. Ultimately what it boils down to for me is "1 Key FACTOR. " That being the fact that Distrokid is the one that offer the "Teams" feature which allows for all the composers & writers of a song to get paid from & by Distrokid directly. They take care of that process which saves time and headache. All the artist releasing the song has to do is add the producer or feature artist to the teams and Distrokid takes care of the rest. If Tunecore offered that I would switch back to them.

Due to our policies we do not disclose the reason for removal.” There was no way to cancel. No way to request a refund. The phone number went to a recording that tells you to go to the website that won’t give you any info. It then hangs up on you. I had to dispute the charge for their fee with my bank. I reported them to the BBB. They have a lot of the same reports against them. There are also a lot of videos on TH-cam of people that were ripped off the same way.

But what killed me is how they got my youtube channel closed down, and also since I license my music, my clients were being hit with cease and desist, and my channel shut down due to repeated copyright violations... OF MY OWN MUSIC!!! What they were doing was uploading my music with them as the author. Therefore I was being cheated by my distributor who was taking credit for my music and probably getting revenue from ad-generated content. My content. To make matters worse, they never replied to repeated attempts to fix this issue. BTW, State 51 is in London. I'm trying to change to either distrokid or whomever.

i’ve used distro and cd baby. cd baby is nice because you get the payment out the way from the start and it feels more transparent than distrokid. on the other hand, i think distro is much easier to use and nice if you don’t want to spend a lot right away, those yearly fees add up tho, especially the leave a legacy one where you have to pay to make sure your song isn’t deleted. distro seems a little too relaxed, it just doesn’t give me the right vibe.

We have tracks on both platforms moreso bc we weren’t sure which to use and hadn't heard of DK yet, the first time around we went with TC first and experimented with DK for the next releases. TC was more expensive per upload, but the songs on DK have more streams. Not sure if that's a factor of the timing, if the newer music is "better," or if the platform tapped us into more listeners though
