Tips for Writing a Successful Letter of Recommendation

  • Whether you have been asked by your recommender to write your own letter of recommendation for him or her to sign, or you are the recommender writing a letter of recommendation, we have some easy guidelines to follow for doing so successfully.
    For the letter of recommendation, use a direct, forthright, personal tone.
    Be concise and thorough. Provide specific details/examples to substantiate your claims. Avoid exaggeration.
    If you are writing your own letter of recommendation, make sure to do so from the recommender's point of view.
    Open the letter by stating clearly the purpose of the letter, generally in one sentence.
    Then state who the writer is, the writer's position, and in what capacity the writer came to know the candidate. This can be done as the second sentence of the first paragraph. If more than one sentence is needed, it can start, or even entirely comprise, the second paragraph.
    Then discuss the candidate's attributes in at least one paragraph.
    Do not be concerned about keeping your letter to one page, unless you don't have much to say. If you don't have much to say, then keep the letter to one page. If you have more to say, then feel free to go beyond one page, even up to six or seven pages.
    Conclude with a two- or three-sentence conclusion reiterating the recommendation, thanking the recipient for his/her time, and the offer to be available to answer any further questions.

    As a hiring manager, if someone gave me a 6-7 page long letter of recommendation I would be tempted to not even read it. That is extremely unprofessional and sort of disrespectful of the admissions office or employers' time. 3-4 pages is even long. I would not recommend a letter more than a page long.

    Bringing up a 6 page LOR is just ridiculous. You should have left that out of this video. You lost some credibility there.

    How is 4-5 pages "concise"??

    • @DLAEditors
      @DLAEditors  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      If it is concisely written. Have you ever seen a bad movie you wish would be over already, and then have you seen an excellent movie you wish would never end? The bad movie could be just an hour and a half, while the excellent movie could be 3 hours. The same applies to a speaker, a book, etc.--anything intended to engage the audience.

    Disagree with how long the paper should be. Max 1 page, maybe two but that’s reaching

    I will never write a recommendation over one page long. It's unprofessional to the person writing the letter. They do not work for the prospective employer. You're saying for every candidate, three people should write 24 pages of concise information about them, for free. Absolutely not.

  • @RootiLewis

    I doubt anyone is going to read a letter of recommendation that long. Maybe, in a few cases it is appropriate. In addition, I have multiple students asking for letters of recommendation. There is no time to write letters of that length.

      It’s that way here as well, but what he was mentioning is a work around that some people do here when they don’t have time to write the letter about the student.

    • @gabi4723
      @gabi4723 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@UniqulyBold1 it's not always that they don't have the time. It's not right for the student to write their own letter, but some teachers/professors are mean people... Compare a letter written by a student and a letter written by a professor... you can see the difference. When they don't write, they don't actually want to help you.

      Many trachers get too many requests, to write them all. They ask the student to write the draft. The student knows their positive strengths best, anyways. The teacher should edit the draft and send the letter, if they agree with all information. Students writing a draft is ok, in many situations.

    If you can say the same thing as a 7 page letter in one page, then the one page letter will be preferred. Furthermore, nobody wants to waste time reading seven pages. This video is hard to watch and misleading.

    • @cathycoryell2351

      No, use 2 or 3 examples, of positive strengths of the person. Give a brief story of that person, that demonstrates their strengths. HR, Admissions, Boards will not read 4+ pages of a single letter. They have to read so many. Get to the point, quickly.

    My recommender submitted the letter with wrong spelling of the institution's name in which she herself teaches. She put "Khlasa college" in place of "Khalsa college". Is this going to count against me for graduate admission in any Canadian university?

    • @brodypenn
      @brodypenn 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’m a student myself but I would say it probably doesn’t look great on you. You could try to email the admissions office explaining if you think it would make or break your acceptance.
