    At my school (a public school), every student is required to complete a very detailed questionnaire of what we want our teacher recommendations to say. In essence, the student/parent crafts the substance of the letter and the teacher adds/subtracts to it where necessary. Ditto for counselor recommendations. The end product is replete with stories, anecdotes, personal details, etc. And yes, many at my school get admitted to the Ivys, so it must be working.

    She is so right! One more tip-if you are trying to decide between two teachers, pick the one that is organized and on time. If one of your picks is always late, it’s likely your letter will also be late.

    I’m a counselor and writing letters is not a teachers job! They often take their own time after school or on the weekends writing them. Students are not entitled to a letter so please be gracious and humble when asking for a letter.

I do it for those who deserve it, however. And usually those that do have the humility and worldview to understand they're being served by someone who cares about them.

  • @lydiagayle12
    @lydiagayle12 3 ปีที่แล้ว +66

    I have written recommendations for 15 years now, and this is the first year where students have told me what they’d like me to write about, and it felt pretty presumptuous when they requested those specific details, considering how much experience I as a teacher bring to the process. It is weird to me that a student would ask a teacher to write a recommendation yet include the implication that the same teacher doesn’t know what should actually go in the letter. For the most part, all the other suggestions you gave are so helpful. I would add that I like for the student to send me a copy of their college essay in addition to a resume/activity list so that what I say expands the scope of their application rather than retelling the same stories they might tell in their essay. And...I haven’t watched the junior video yet, but can you please let them know that how they behave in class MATTERS and shapes a recommendation. Engagement in discussion and class activities, demonstrating respect to one’s peers and teachers, meeting deadlines, resisting shortcuts, and even displaying self-control with regard to cellphone use all make significant impressions on a teacher who may be writing your recommendation. Thank you for your videos - you deliver a lot of helpful content!

    • @brookifyd
      @brookifyd 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Hi Lydia-- Thanks for your feedback. Not trying to tell kids to be presumptuous-- so sorry that's what this has possibly led to. What motivates my advice, in part, is the idea that a student might feel something is missing in their application that a particular teacher could speak to and to help a teacher understand that speaking to that topic may be of more help to that student. I apologize if this video has resulted in students seeming demanding or presumptuous.

    When it comes to a CV, which literally means "Course of Life" from the Latin "Curriculum Vitae" it is a lot like in a court case with opposing attorneys who are more or less of equal ability. Whoever tells the best story wins. In my case, for my part I'm reconnecting with old faculty whom know one thing about me which jogs their memory and can speak to that point of information. Then I've one man whose known me longer than my college professors and I work for him today. He will sum up what the other two will allude to.

    Is it too early to ask for one in February? Or should I wait for March/April/May?
    Just an FYI, the teacher I'm planning to ask is leaving the university for the last 5 weeks of the semester. So probably in early March. He will come back for our final presentation but he will be gone for the last month and a half of the semester. That's why I thought it'd be appropriate to ask for one now because I'd assume leaving the university will be time-consuming, etc but at the same time - IDK if it's too early as many videos say right before summer break or right after the school year starts (this is also my final year of bachelors hence there won't be a next "start" of the year and the teacher will be gone even if I did anyway).

      You invite the teachers usually through an online emailed link. They fill out the form and it then is sent to the college. You don't get to "review" the letter. Though teachers who pull the "write me a letter and I'll sign it" will tell you that up front so in such cases you can move along. You can also ask different teachers for different applications if that is appropriate (and it sometimes is for ex if your teacher is an alum of where you're applying).

      @Hannah Henris I wish to mention my past degree because I want it to be part of my essays to Harvard,also I want to continue with philosophy in that I am going for a double honor at Harvard - philosophy and computer science. The sat is much available here in my country Nigeria. Do you think not mentioning my past degree will help my application? Please I need your thought on that.

    Hi, i am from India and I have been regularly watching your videos and I love them so much.
    Just wanted to take an opinion on this: I am planning to apply for a psychology major. For the LoR, I am confused who to ask because on one side is my psychology teacher who knows how much I love the subject. On the other side is my class teacher (basically home room teacher who also teaches me Political Science) who knows a completely different aspect of me in terms of sports and leadership and all extra and co curricular activities. I am completely split between who to a choose because I know both of them are good story tellers as well.
    It would be great if you could help me out 😅

      most teachers wouldn’t feel offended. in fact, if she was willing to have a self study period for german because she has band and aps, i think that shows she is still really interested in German enough to sacrifice her lunch time to study it! i do also think it stinks tho that you have to sacrifice some classes to take aps but it is what it is

      @La Campanella Usually, you don’t (ever) get to see the letters. Your teachers and counselors send them directly to the colleges. So you won’t get to pick the “best” ones. If your teacher lets you see yours or gives you a copy, that is very unusual. So be nice to your teachers-they can be honest in your letters!

      You can always slow down the speed of the video by clicking on the gear in the lower right hand corner. This way you can run it and a half speed if it is going too fast for you. There is no speed that is perfect for everyone.

    Hi Brook. My name is Victor, and I learned a lot from your video of how to apply to colleges. I have a problem, and I am hoping you could help me. I just find out I got rejected from Stanford. That was my dream school. I thought for sure I got in because I found an online company that sells stress balls to relieve people's stress. I saw other webinars that taught you how to be exceptional, and not just doing what most applicants do, which is just getting good grades, good SAT scores, and activities most applicants do. I thought most applicants don't found online companies because this is something that is unique since most applicants don't do online companies. They just do activities most people do in schools, which is whatever clubs have at school. So I thought I got in Stanford because I did something exceptional and most applicants didn't do. But somehow I still got rejected. Could you give me reasons why Stanford rejected me? I am sure you could tell me since you are an expertise in college admissions. If you serve in the committee that recruits students, then you must tell me. Could you also give me suggestions what kind of activities I should join so I could get into Stanford. Also could you tell me this: is it because Stanford get a sense my online business doesn't generate any sales so it rejected me. But how would they know. Or they psyche me out and know. Could you tell me about this too. Please email me. Thank you for your attention Brooke.

      Offhand I would say check your grammar, word choice and spelling… it could be your level of fluency or TOEFL… but Stanford overall is highly competitive and excellent candidates sometimes get rejected
