  • #Filmanter : Satrangi Re - The Seven Shades Of Love
One aspect from Mani Ratnam's 1998 terrorism saga "Dil Se" was the incorporation of the seven shades of love as first introduced in ancient Arabic literature. These shades are attraction, infatuation, love, reverence, worship, obsession and finally death. Dil Se follows radiobroadcaster Amartkant Varma as he finds himself going through these exact stages as the film progresses further. One thing Ratnam does to put the point across is use his songs to further all the arcs that the film talks about in its entire, and that's exactly what the song "Satrangi Re" does with the seven stages of love. Lets find out how the song sees Amar going through these stages of love in hindsight that he follows in the film.

    About Dil Se (Wiki):
Dil Se.. (lit. 'From the Heart..') is a 1998 Indian Hindi-language romantic drama film written and directed by Mani Ratnam, and produced by Ratnam, Ram Gopal Varma, and Shekhar Kapur. Set in the backdrop of Kashmir, the film stars Shahrukh Khan and Manisha Koirala, while Preity Zinta makes her film debut in a supporting role. Written by Ratnam and Tigmanshu Dhulia, the film is an example of parallel cinema and is noted as the final installment of Ratnam's thematic trilogy that consists of Roja (1992) and Bombay (1995). Though the film was shot mainly in Hindi-language, director Mani Ratnam also dubbed and released the film in Tamil and Malayalam in the title Uyire.. (lit. 'Darling..') which became very popular among Tamil-audience with its songs and in Telugu with the title Prematho. Shah Rukh Khan's Tamil dialogues were dubbed by Arvind Swamy in the film.
The film was screened at the Era New Horizons Film Festival and the Helsinki International Film Festival. Noted for its aspects nonlinear storytelling, the film won awards for cinematography, audiography, choreography, and music, among others. The film was a success overseas earning $975,000 in the United States and £537,930 in the United Kingdom, becoming the first Indian film to enter the top 10 in the United Kingdom box office charts, and it was also a hit in Japan. The film won two National Film Awards and six Filmfare Awards, while also receiving a special mention at the Netpac Awards. The film's soundtrack album, composed by A. R. Rahman, sold six million units in India.

This song is a fine blend of spirituality and eroticism

Even the title track is full of symbolism like featuring the burning bridge shot which is quite a frequent sight in Ratnam's film.

Great analysis and interpretation. When I first watched Dil Se I didn't enjoy the movie or understand the symbolism (I was too young to appreciate it). After rewatching now it really is an amazing movie. The music, cinematography, performances and feelings this movie invokes is brilliant. I think average Bollywood film goers were similar to me and unable to appreciate it at the time

Well at first i thought my favorite song from Dil Se was Dil se re, but the more I listen to the original score the more I love ae ajnabi, and probably because of what it feels like in the movie. And satarangi re, for its own meaning
This is a really misunderstood movie abroad, and such a shame. It’s my absolute favorite Indian movie for sure. ❤

of course my favourite song of the movie is Ae Ajnabi, as that is more relatable and kind of what he wants or a happy third world out of reality, while the other songs are also not similiar as each song has its own depiction, chhaiya chhaiya is absolutely once in alife time creation by gulzar and ar rahman as lyrics can make anyone passionated about life, the title track is also so close to my heart as SRK in its intial phase somehow wanted to be the her of her life and despite of knowing her backgroud issue he is ready to not only accept her but to take her out her sufferings, and that what the song dil se re depicts and again great lyrics, jiya jale is also one of its kind, what a women feels deep down for her man, and you have already disscussed aboud satrangi re, the singers were awesome, SRK in song AE Ajnabi is just emotion, Manisha performance in entire movie is blast of human emotions, my all time favourite movie, NO more words.

Wow another Dil Se video. It makes me happy :) My favourite song is Satrangi Re and for exactly all the reasons you mentioned. Additional factor is that I just couldnt take off my eyes from Manisha whenever I watch this song, may be thats why I miss few smaller details that you mentioned. I also just noticed that SRK's kurta has all the stages of love in Urdu. I can read "Junoon". This song is just breathtaking. Thanks Aamir :)

My favourite is Satarangi Re…it’s just so intense and poetic and groovy…And yes,it was very hard to keep eyes off Manisha Koirala in this song…She looked so otherworldly, ethereal here
