    Yes, I'm still flying with it and recently flashed it with the Gruvin9X firmware. I've had good luck with mine.

    Thank you, for the information on the training cable.

    @Tom Lombardi Couple things,
    1) The trainer switch actually has 3 pins inside, swap the outside on to the opposite side and it will be the way you prefer, you can even rotate it if you prefer to press it down vs pull up...
    2) The control is a 9 channel, but the receiver and probably the transmitter are 8
    3) They have a $16 dollar lipo that fits in the battery compartment on hobby king Zippy 2500 3C "Transmitter Pack."
    4) You also might want to consider getting the LCD backlight and re-flashing the firmware to er9x ...
    Nice video ;)

    I was just ordering a Pocket AVR programmer to do just that!, like I mean I have it in the Sparkfun cart now!!! Crazy timing of your comment! Yes, it adds a lot, I can't wait to get it going.
    Thanks.

    I set an email notification about 6 weeks ago. Got an order in about 2 weeks ago, and my radio is currently in transit, and I should have it before the end of this week.

    Great radio for the price. My first 9x-mode2 had an intermittant problem with the ELEVON stick. I was going to send it back but figured it would be cheaper & less hassle to just buy another one. Latest one is going fine, 2 models.. x-quad & h-quad.
    I replaced the 8xAA battery pack with a Rhino 2650mAH 3S Lipo.. fits fine though I cut a hole in the cover so I could dangle the charger leads out, rather than squishing them all in with the pack.

    I really liked the last point that you made. I am just now getting into FPV using multi-ro's and I am going to be lifting some very heavy SLR cam equip / gimble etc. eventually. This endeavor is killing me with the expense and thats why I am researching cheaper radios but I would NEVER trust this radio for what I am trying to do due to the safety factor alone.I hacked my (r) arm up pretty bad about 4 years ago with rotors. 6 or more sharp/screaming props is a whole new game! UR Right B-Safe!

    I really love value and I love this $50 radio even more now that I've flashed it with gruvin9x firmware. I built the 50 cal for about $500 in materials and a whole lot of hours of machine work. It hurts to buy ammo for it, but the hurt goes away when you pull the trigger :)

  • @Hoverbot1TV

    I am buying one of these with a uhf system Sun. I like the warning at end as I saw a 50pound gasser plane smash into a moving car back as a kid in 80's The best radios then glitched more I bet than the 9x. LOL!

  • @TomLombardi
    @TomLombardi  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm not sure what you mean. You can program some of the channels to mix with a knob that can be turned on by a switch. There's also a gear switch. Hope this helps.

  • @TomLombardi

    Here are some notes on how to get the trainer to work on a Turnigy V2:
    Training Setup:
    Instructor TX (radio bound to airplane).
    Trainer menu all channels on.
    Power switch on.
    Timer off.
    Rubber band pulling trainer switch on.
    Student TX.
    Trainer menu set off.
    Power switch off.
    Module out and taped to the back.
    Mixes and rates match instructor TX.
    Cable plugged into instructor TX.

  • @ap0lmc
    @ap0lmc 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    Re: trainer switch I just re-soldered the outside wire to the opposite post and when you turn on transmitter it will beep "switch" error then pull trainer switch once and now your back into normal functions. Must do this on every power ups. Also the slave Tx will not work unless you remove the module which sucks but it's a $60 radio.

  • @TomLombardi
    @TomLombardi  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    It is a real computer radio with a heli mode. You can set knobs to work on a channel which I think would work to control gain. Hope this helps.

  • @TomLombardi
    @TomLombardi  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can get the radio from Hobbypartz online. They sell it as the Flysky FS-TH9X.

  • @TomLombardi
    @TomLombardi  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @npawn I think DSM2 receivers are for Spektrum radios, they won't bind to the Turnigy, however the Turnigy receivers are only $8.99 each.

  • @TomLombardi
    @TomLombardi  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    You could install alternate firmware, but that's pretty involved. If you change the wiring on the switch you will get a switch error every time you turn the TX on. You'll also lose the timer function which is also controlled by that switch.

    Smartieparts board and er9x. It adds so much functionality for such a small price.

    @MrMaxymoo22 It's a scratch built 50 BMG sniper rifle I built from plans by Bill Holmes. Just got back from a friends 400 acre ranch, shot a < 1 foot group - 1250 yards with British surplus ammo! I've got $500 in materials and many hours of work in it. Good times!

    I read somewhere that using rechargeable AA batteries is a no go. Makes sense - normal AA are 1.5V x 8 = 12V and rechargeable batteries - 1.2V x 8 = 9.6V
    Near the bottom of the input range...

  • @wingnutzster
    @wingnutzster 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you that makes sense, I will certainly look into that although I assume the Life Tx battery I have will negate the need to flip anything.

  • @TomLombardi
    @TomLombardi  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    The receiver antenna needs to be a specific length. If it's broke at the board you may be able to solder it back on. If it's not the same length your range will suffer. The fat part of the antenna is a loading coil which is also important for range. I would replace the receiver. If you live in the US you could buy one from HobbyPartz, the FlySky 6 (R6B) and 8 channel receivers are compatible.

  • @KozmykJ
    @KozmykJ 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @0n3m1s1s0 the Turnigy IS Freq hopping but only across 16 channels. The FrSky hops across 80 channels. Also the FrSky has full Fail-Safe on the Rx. PLUS the option of telemetry. TH9X with FrSky module is the way to go with this one I reckon.

  • @TomLombardi
    @TomLombardi  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    That happen to a friend of mine so we split the cost of another new radio and share the broken one for parts. I recently had a dead spot in my elevator stick, I used component cleaner spray from RS and fixed it.

  • @TomLombardi
    @TomLombardi  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @wingnutzster The battery tray fits better with the tray flipped so the batteries are showing. The lid will fit better and the tray won't distort, which could lead to an intermittent problem. This will be obvious when you get your radio.

  • @TomLombardi
    @TomLombardi  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I did the same thing. I flashed the eprom with gruvin9x firmware and calibrated the voltmeter.

  • @TomLombardi
    @TomLombardi  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, I do and it's working great.

  • @TomLombardi
    @TomLombardi  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @wingnutzster It's only an eight channel when using the 2.4 module. If you look at the receiver you'll see that only 8 channels are available.

  • @TomLombardi
    @TomLombardi  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    We have several guys in our club flying the Turnigy 9X in Radian motor gliders without any problems with range. We use either the 9X8Cv28 receiver that comes with the radio or a 6 channel Fly Sky FS-R6B, both have a long single antenna. Sometimes these 2 meter gliders are nearly out of sight and are nursed back without losing radio contact. You might have a bad TX module or receiver. Also, cupping the receiver in your hand will shield RF more than the body of a model plane, so that might not be a good test. I wish I had better news for you. Hope this helps.

    • @TPSTR

      They are. Its the programing part I don't understand, am new to all of this.

    • @TPSTR
      @TPSTR 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      When I connect it to the ESC it keeps beeping fast and nothing works neither the motor or the servos

    • @TomLombardi
      @TomLombardi  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the transmitter needs to be bound to the receiver. Plug the bind plug into the bind port of the receiver, then power the receiver, a light will be blinking fast on the receiver, next push and hold the button on the back of the 9X and while holding the button power on the 9X. After a few seconds the blinking light on the receiver will go solid on, the Rx should be bound. Power everything off and unplug the bind plug. Power up everything normally and it should work.

    The battery tray does short i have lost 2 planes because of this and had to remove the rear pannel to get it to stop. Was putting pressure on the battery tray. Other than that been a great raido. Now doing a FrSky conversion.

  • @TomLombardi
    @TomLombardi  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's a 1/8" (3.5mm) male to male mono audio cable, the same cable Spektrum / JR uses.

  • @TomLombardi
    @TomLombardi  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @HeadShot360IN I agree, I don't think it's a big deal, however if it's in wrong it distorts the battery pack and this has led to crashes! There are no instructions in the box, I wonder how many people that had problems just chalked it up to a bad radio?

  • @KozmykJ
    @KozmykJ 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @SuperPianowizard Yes buddy/trainer function works but the trainer unit has to remove the module or else the PPM signal gets messed up. There's a mod they use for simulators which is adding a 1k resistor to the PPM line but I don't know how that affects signal strength for flying. Yet ... ;)

  • @TomLombardi
    @TomLombardi  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @inagerli On the main screen "model" is confusingly truncated to read "mode", so what it actually means is that you've selected model 3.

    Thanks for very sincere review. I trust your take on this $53 dollar radio. Too bad they inverted the switch though. Can you recommend a good place to buy this transmitter, preferably in the US. Other there store you'd recommend other then Hobby King who seems to be backlogged, out of stock, or expensive shipping for small part. Thanks for any help to newbies!

  • @TomLombardi
    @TomLombardi  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks. I proved my point a few weeks ago, the radio went blank and I watched a $75 Slow Stick crash, it just missed the hood of a vehicle. Later I investigated why the lights went out, the connector on my Lipo TX battery wasn't seating well enough, I've replaced it an all is well. Imagine having >$500 wrapped up in a multirotor with a expensive camera mounted to it! Tears!! I think JR or Futaba might be the way to go for something dangerous and or expensive.

  • @TomLombardi
    @TomLombardi  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    A DX5E is a good radio, I had one, but is really limited. I had mine for a couple of months. If you stay in the hobby you'll be selling it to get a more advanced radio.

    You can keep the antenna inside, but I would tape it down, in a crash it could tear out of the RX.

  • @TomLombardi

    @somezade It uses a 3.5mm plug like on the Spektrum. I've haven't used it for a simulator.

    A very professional video and well done indeed. I'm looking for a replacement of my old Futaba Digimax 5 and this model seemed ideal and very inexpensive considering what it has in it. but....do I really need a computer screen to fly a model plane, my old Futaba, just switched on and I set controls by altering the servo arms/control wires/control horns, these modern sets just seem to be over computerised. The Screen would have been nicer in blue. It would also be nice like my Futaba with DEAC rechargeable battery to have a Li-po battery in the TX. Still looking not made my mind up yet what to buy.

    It would seem to me the trainer switch should be an easy fix. They are just momentary switches. If it is a momentary normally open, change it out to a momentary normally closed. Any good electric supply company should stock them in various styles and lengths.

    Hi Tom! Great video! I just "invested" in the 9x myself, a long time Airtronics fan. No problem binding, but I cannot get ANY servo to respond to any channel. Have a solid 6.0 VDC from a NiMH battery and all servos tested are brand new Hitec's, test fine in Airtronics receivers. Any suggestions? Have gone through the menus to see if there is any INH whihc may affect, as well as attempted to operate the servos on other MODE(L) selections. So much for trying the 9x tomorrow... Thanks in advance!

    If the trainer switch logic is inverted when the TX is switched on the TX complains. Are you saying there's a momentary switch that has an 'on' - 'off' then momentary 'on' position? If so, it would be a great solution!
    Thanks.

    I'm looking to get one of these for my model boat and I've noticed that while the transmitter has 9 channels, the receiver only lists 8.
    How do the 9 channels translate to the 8 channels on the receiver as I would like to have 2 channels to operate on/off functions and the rest to operate the throttle and servos?
    Any help would be gratefully received.
