Yeah these defenders today would get destroyed by Larry they're nothing compared to the defenders Larry played against like Michael Cooper with the Lakers and Dennis Rodman with the pistons/bulls, Bird would average a triple double every season and people forget that when Larry came into the league the 3 - point shot was new and not used like it is today

@@ChuckHuffmaster He invented the 50/40/90 club. A master of the dagger 3. He didn't need the 3 pointer. For the most part, he didn't use it much at all until after his 1st back injury in 85 off season.

James Worthy said “ Jordan made you look slow, Larry made you look stupid”. Larry got every teammate on the court involved in the game, notice that in his passing video there’s many times he has the shot but feeds it to a teammate so they score, the HOFamers on his team were made by Larry drawing the double team then passing to the open teammate for a undefended easy shot, he was inspirational and unselfish

Follow up to the 3 point contests...Bird won the first 3 but was injured for the 4th which was won by Hodges of the Bulls who had finished 2nd to Bird twice previously.
When the media asked Hodges if he only won due to Bird's absence, he said "Larry knows where to find me."
When Bird was told what Hodges said, Bird responded..."Yeah, I know where...at the end of the Bulls bench."

One thing that sets Larry apart from all others is everything he accomplished for basketball after his retirement. He didn't retire from basketball, only from playing.

    • @Alice-xy3fi
      @Alice-xy3fi 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

And, in addition to his MVPs, championships, and all the rest, he then added Coach of the Year, and when he retired from that, he made Executive of the Year-- the only player to have won all three (though it's obv. not a level playing field because of all the years Black players were denied that kind of post-retirement job opportunities).
Also...don't be so quick to jump to conclusions, esp. one so disgusting as to assume a Bird fan is a (barf) Celtics fan. I was a diehard Lakers fan (with a years'-long crush on Byron Scott) and I freakin' hated the Celtics. But the way I felt was, if you loved basketball, you had to love watching Larry, even while he was tying you up in knots. His game was just so beyond skillful, so interesting, exciting, beautiful, intelligent, creative, surprising, witty, joyous, amazing...etc.
So yes, I'll go to the mat for Larry as one of the top 3 GOATs (all on the same level, and there for different reasons), and maybe even THE GOAT...just don't call me no Celtics fan!
p.s. I also really liked Aguirre, especially when he was with the Pistons, and I really like some of things he's said (including something about Bird, which I just heard the other day but can't recall at the moment, natch) so it was fun hearing of your connection to him.

Bird was narrating the scoring to Dr J. Dr J started talking when Bird missed his first six shots, and DrJ had scored 3 in a row. From that point on Bird was saying, 6/6, 10/6, 12/6, 18/6, at 38/6 Bird told DrJ that he’s washed up. Dr J took a swing at Bird for the slight, and a brawl ensued. Both were ejected, and that’s how it ended.

Bird didn't make many digs at his opponents. He just told them what he was going to do and did it. If anything it was a teaching lesson every time. He was loyal to one team and to his teammates. He raised their game level. If a teammate couldn't keep up the pace when it was needed, he wasn't on the team long. Good reaction. Thanks for sharing.

Bird is just shy of 6'10", he was, in my opinion, pound for pound the toughest scrapinest player in the NBA at that time. Not the strongest or a bully , but he definitely threw hands if warranted, and at times unwarranted. lol. There are two or three vids on him worth a look, the Alpha male rookie vid (includes some amazing facts and stats also) and the 10 most savage moments. Then 5 times he played injured and also greatest passer re-edit. I enjoyed your reaction to this, you guys kept it going but also made it interesting with your impressions and commentary peppered throughout in the perfect balance. :) Larry is by far my fav, always has been, not only for the astronomical bball IQ and unparalleled confidence and clutch, but for the type of man he is. Truly a genuine, stand up, do what needs done at all times man. Magic, Michael and Kobe are those types of men too, that's is the difference that separates a GOAT from a great athletic player, I wish more often that aspect was included when I hear so many young peeps ranking the top 3, 5 10.....I believe to reach or be considered a GOAT should be based on more than just the caliber of their game, but also the caliber of their character and disposition, heart and showing up every game 100% for the team & the W. If you watch more films of Birds, notice the number of clean and easy buckets he doesn't take but passes the ball to team mates, A GOAT is a GOAT because they make their team mates better too. His scoring stat line overall would be much higher if he'd have taken more shots instead of passing. The players I named above along with Bird are truly, inarguably my GOATs, in every aspect. If the criteria for deeming a player a GOAT is based on just shooting 3s , being a bigger,,stronger more athletic player...well shit.....then there are a lot more candidates.....GOAT status is just that because skill ,ability and talent in sports is not only physical. Players seemed to take the game more personally then, I miss the kind of play that was like it was learned & played in the school yard or neighborhood court . I feel so lucky that I grew up with the OG NBA, the game now seems to have no heart/soul, no real competition between players that throw everything in to win, physically, strategically and humbly. IDK....honestly, I find it boring after 10 min. I enjoy hockey very much too, if you haven't reacted or are familiar with it much, there are some jaw dropping skills in that sport that most don't realize for not watching or knowing....I'd like to request you react to " biggest hits in NHL history" and the "best dangles" you won't regret it :)

He had a great Post Game, so he always had a mismatch. If you put somebody his size on him, he would just take them outside, a smaller player would get tortured in the paint until the opposing coach switched defenders. There really wasn't anything they could do one on one to stop him.

@@heshy14 You realize a person loses height as they age. Especially tall people. He's in his late 60s. I have no doubt at minimum he's lost an inch of height compared to his playing days.
I think it's like someone else commented. They averaged up for Magic, and averaged down for Bird. Because every picture or video I've seen of them standing next to each other, Bird is noticeably taller.

Just ran across this channel, I saw the Bass Pro Cap and subscribed right away.
You both satisfied me in that you see Larry for what was. It didn't end when he couldn't play any longer because of his back & feet. After retiring he went on to coaching the Pacers and then into their management. Mr. Bird was pure basketball all his life. Many he played against were great players too. All didn't like him, but they knew what he was. A great ball & team player all his life! You could say a Worthy opponent! Enjoy the many videos on you-tube giving you an idea as to what he was, and whether he was the Goat or not. There are many compelling arguments in his favor. Live Long & Prosper!

The more videos of Bird you watch, the more you will realize that he is among the best players ever in the NBA - a top 3 for sure.
Here are 2 stats that people don't realize about Bird.
Bird led the league 4 times for defensive win shares. If you add the number of time Lebron has done that to the number of times Jordan has done that - you get ZERO!
Larry Bird, for his career, averaged more defensive rebounds per game than:
    Kareem Abdul-Jabbar
    Patrick Ewing
    Shaquille O'Neal
    Karl Malone
    Moses Malone
    Hakeem Olajuwon
    Ralph Sampson
    Dikembe Mutumbo
    David Robinson
    just to name a few.

The crazy thing about Bird is that it absolutely was psychological warfare with him. I think he enjoyed the feeling of talking shit and then backing it up, but it wasn't just arrogance. Poker is a psychological game. It has almost nothing to do with the cards in your hand. It's about getting in your opponents' heads. I think he incorporated that into his game and that's part of what made him such a beast. He would feed you points for three quarters just so he could steal them all back in the forth while you were stuck in a state of confusion about just what the hell was happening - then he'd win. And he probably wouldn't have won if he hadn't done exactly that. It's insane. Nobody else plays like that.

To understand how great Bird was and could he play in today’s game? You would have to take the very best traits of Luka, Jokic and Nowitzky and then you’d come close to being Bird. His all around game and “that muscle between the ears” (as Kareem said) is what sets him apart. He’s definitely on my Mt Rushmore
